\nPresenter: Sophie A. H. Osborn \nCLICK HERE to reserve your spot – Cos
ponsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nBirds are visible\, vocal sent
inels that alert us to environmental harms through their declining numbers
or their failure to thrive. In her book Feather Trails—A Journey of Dis
covery Among Endangered Birds\, Sophie Osborn shares her personal experien
ces reintroducing endangered Peregrine Falcons\, Hawaiian Crows\, and Cali
fornia Condors to the wild. While immersing readers in the triumphs and tr
ibulations of being a wildlife biologist\, Sophie explores the threats tha
t imperiled these birds\, and reveals that what harmed them threatens us\,
too. She will discuss what led to the endangerment of these three captiva
ting species\, recount biologists’ efforts to recover their populations\
, and read a few excerpts from her book describing what it was like to wor
 k with these magnificent birds. \nSophie A. H. Osborn is an award-winning
writer and wildlife biologist whose work has included studying and conserv
ing more than a dozen bird species in the Americas. She contributed to rei
ntroduction efforts for several endangered birds\, including as a field ma
nager for the California Condor Recovery Program in Arizona. Her first boo
k\, Condors in Canyon Country\, won the 2007 National Outdoor Book Award f
or Nature and the Environment. Reviewers for the American Birding Associat

DESCRIPTION:The Death of Jesus and the Message of Life: According to the G
 ospel of John\nTuesday\, September 22\, 2026\, 6–8:30 p.m.\nWith Craig K
oester\nIn-Person and Online\n“Life” is the heart of the gospel John p
roclaims. It defines who God is and what God gives. The gift is both physi
cal and relational. It begins now and shapes a way of life in the world\,
and it holds within it Christ’s promise of resurrection. Jesus’ crucif
ixion remains the stubborn fact that challenges our understanding of what
the message of life means. His death was the outcome of social and politic
al forces that culminated in state-sponsored violence. But in putting to d
eath the Giver of Life\, the world reveals the depth of its estrangement f
rom God. Using different interpretive lenses\, John presses us to see how
God\, through the death of Jesus\, does indeed give life. The Gospel takes
us beyond popular notions of sin and sacrifice by presenting a more radic
al message. Through the crucifixion\, God conveys the fullness of his love
for the world in order to evoke the faith that gives life. This cruciform
love is militant\, confronting the forces of deception and hate\, and giv
ing urgency to contemporary Christian witness that seeks fullness of life
for individuals\, communities\, and the world God made.\nLearn more and re
 gister.\nluthersem.edu/fretheim26

DESCRIPTION:Mount Zion’s Israel Advisory Committee Presents:\nIsrael Vot
es 2026\n“Never Has There Been Such an Important Election”\nA Four-Par
 t Educational Seminar\nWednesdays\, September 23\, 30\; October 7\, 28\, 1
2:00-1:15 pm via Zoom (All sessions will be recorded). \nInstructor: Mike
 Hollander – Jewish Educator and Tour Guide\nCost: $54/Members\; $72/Publ
ic\nFinancial support is available to members upon request. Please reach o
ut to our Executive Director\, Kate Tucker. \nIsrael had faced seemingly i
nsurmountable external and internal threats in its less than 80 year exist
ence. Israelis will vote for the 26th Knesset by October 27\, 2026 after t
he tumultuous events of the last 6 years\, including the COVID pandemic\,
the attack of October 7\, 2023\, and the seemingly never-ending 7-front wa
r of the last almost 3 years. \nPrime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has led
one of the longest-serving governments in Israeli history over the last fo
ur years. For many Israelis who head to the polls within a few months\, th
e one question they face as they enter the polling booth is “To Bibi or
Not to Bibi.” In recent years\, Israelis are voting less for political i
deologies\, and more for individual leaders. \nOne of the more popular que
stions I have faced in teaching about Israel over more than 40 years is
“Why is the Israeli system of governance so crazy? It seems like your go
vernment barely survives its fragile coalition and you are always on the b
rink of heading to new elections. Why does everything feel like such a ‘
balagan’ here?” \nThis four-part series is designed to help understand
the nature of Israeli democracy and how the uniquely Israeli political sy
stem and elections work. Three sessions will be offered during the campaig
n and before the elections\, and the fourth will be shortly after the dust
settles and a coalition is made to form a new Israeli government. \n\nSep
tember 23: Israeli Democracy 101 – “How a People Without Power Became
 a Powerful People: Israeli Democracy”\nSeptember 30: Israeli Politics 10
2 – “Continued Challenges to Israeli Democracy” How Israel went from
its broadest – yet short-lived – coalition\, to the most right wing g
overnment in its history in the 4th and 5th elections over 3 ½ years. Wha
t challenges has Israel faced during this topsy-turvy period?\nOctober 7:
Israeli Elections 2026 – “Who are the parties and leaders\, and what a
re the platforms and issues in this election?”\nOctober 28: What now and
where are we heading after the elections? Possible scenarios for a govern
ment coalition after the elections”\n\nMike was the much-beloved Tour Ed
ucator Mount Zion’s 2006 Israel Trip and teacher of our online series du
ring the pandemic in 2021: “7 Countries in 7 Weeks”. He was born in Ca
nada and made Aliyah to Modiin\, Israel in 1998. Before making Aliyah\, he
completed his BA degree at York University\, Toronto in History and began
his MA degree in Middle eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University. He comple
ted his MA from the Cambridge Center for Jewish-0Christian Relations in 20
 08. Jewish education has always been Mike’s passion and he began to guid
 e Israel trips in 1994.

DESCRIPTION:Investigate the origins of humanity through the evidence early
people left behind\, exploring how historians\, archaeologists\, and scie
ntists reconstruct the earliest chapters of human history. Dr. Katharine G
erbner\, historian and scholarly lead for this series\, will facilitate a
conversation with historians Katherine (Kat) Hayes\, Sofía Pacheco-Forés
\, and Bula Wayessa. Each historian will present their scholarship\, drawi
ng on primary and secondary sources to explore how environment\, migration
\, and material evidence shape our understanding of the ancient world. Thi
s session provides deep historical context\, source analysis\, and themati
c framing for teaching this era\, with opportunities for participant quest
ions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\n\n+View Katherine Hayes’ Bio\n\n\n\n\nKat
herine (Kat) Hayes is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Herita
ge Studies and Public History program at the University of Minnesota Twin
Cities. She is trained as an archaeologist and received her PhD in Anthrop
ology from the University of California Berkeley. Her earlier work explore
d sites of settler colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous and enslaved
populations in the Northeast US. More recently she has focused on the ethi
cs of archaeological knowledge production and of collecting. Her projects
have facilitated repatriation of University and museum collections\, inves
tigated the historical production of heritage sites such as Historic Fort
Snelling\, and collaborated on interpretive exhibits on historical and arc
 haeological sites.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n+View Sofía Pacheco-Forés’ Bio\
n\n\n\n\nSofía Pacheco-Forés is a bioarchaeologist whose research focuse
s on migration in ancient Mexico. She uses bone and tooth chemistry in con
junction with human skeletal and dental morphology to reconstruct ancient
migration patterns to understand the experiences of past migrants and thei
r recipient communities. She examines the role migration played in social
and cultural change\, including in ancient state formation\, the spread of
novel material culture complexes\, the expression of social inequality\,
and eruptions of mass violence. She has on-going collaborative research pr
ojects in central Mexico\, Oaxaca\, and northwestern Mexico. \n\n\n\n\n\n\
n\n\n+View Bula Wayessa’s Bio\n\n\n\n\nBula Wayessa is an Associate Prof
essor of Archaeology in the Department of African American & African Studi
es at the University of Minnesota. His scholarly interests include agricul
 tural change\, food systems\, social identity\, mobility\, memory\, materi
ality\, and ontology. Through ethnoarchaeological approaches\, his work ex
plores how materialities shape social life\, cultural continuity\, and his
torical transformation. He has conducted extensive field research in Ethio
pia and has published widely on topics including foodways\, technology\, h

nce \nThe North American prairie is an ecological marvel —a lush carpet
of grass that stretches to the horizon and is home to some of the nation
 ’s most iconic creatures: bison\, elk\, wolves\, pronghorn\, prairie dog
s\, and bald eagles. Plants\, microbes\, and animals together made the gra
sslands one of the richest ecosystems on Earth and a massive carbon sink\,
but the constant expansion of agriculture threatens what remains. \nWhen
European settlers encountered the prairie nearly two hundred years ago\, r
ather than a natural wonder\, they saw an alien and forbidding place. But
with the steel plow\, artificial drainage\, and fertilizers\, they convert
ed the prairie into some of the world’s most productive farmland—a tra
nsformation unprecedented in human history. American farmers fed the indus
trial revolution and made North America a global breadbasket\, but at a te
rrible cost: the forced dislocation of Indigenous peoples\, pollution of g
reat rivers\, and catastrophic loss of wildlife. Today\, industrial agricu
lture continues its assault on the prairie\, plowing up one million acres
of grassland a year. Farmers can protect this extraordinary landscape\, bu
t trying new ideas can mean ruin in a business with razor-thin margins\, a
nd will require help from Washington\, D.C.\, and from consumers. \nVetera
n journalists and Midwesterners Dave Hage and Josephine Marcotty reveal hu
manity’s relationship with this incredible land\, offering a deep\, comp
assionate analysis of the difficult decisions and opportunities facing agr
icultural and Indigenous communities. Sea of Grass is a vivid portrait of
a miraculous ecosystem\, making clear why the future of this region is of
essential concern far beyond the heartland.

DESCRIPTION:Rostered ministers in this synod are expected to participate i
n boundary training every five years. \nOne of the ways pastors and deacon
s build trust with those they serve is by staying attentive to boundary si
tuations. As those who are ordained\, we are often given privileged access
to people and to relationships with others in time of their great need an
d vulnerability. While the basics of tending that responsibility with care
do not change much year by year\, in this synod we are committed to a reg
ular pattern of continuing education through boundary-training workshops.
Lunch will be provided. \nWatch for more details and for registration to o
 pen soon!

DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE to reserve your spot – Co-Sponsored with Land of
Lakes Bird Alliance \nStephanie Schubel is the field lead\, lead plover ba
nder\, and field team coordinator for the Great Lakes Piping Plover Conser
vation Team (affiliated with the University of Minnesota and based out of
the University of Michigan Biological Station).   She will be presenting
her team’s current work and findings.  \nKey Highlights of Her Work\n\
n\nField Leadership: For around two decades\, she has led hands-on conserv
ation efforts for the endangered Great Lakes Piping Plover population\, co
ordinating field crews across nesting sites in Michigan and the broader Gr
eat Lakes region. \n\n\nBanding & Research: Schubel oversees the banding o
f chicks and adults to monitor individual birds\, track survival rates\, t
race migration patterns\, and collect genetic data to support recovery eff
 orts.   \n\n\n\n\n\nConservation Milestones: Her team’s work—combinin
 g nest monitoring\, public education\, predator management\, and captive r
earing—has helped the Great Lakes Piping Plover population rebound from
a low of 12 to 17 pairs in the 1980s to a recent record high of over 85 br
eeding pairs.    \n\n\n\n\n\nPublic Outreach: A central focus of her out
reach is teaching beachgoers how to safely share habitat with these camouf
lage-nesting shorebirds (such as maintaining a ~100-foot distance and keep
ing dogs leashed).   \n\n\n\nPhoto Credit – Melissa Groo

nsored with Land of Lakes Bird Alliance \nThe Sax-Zim Bog is perhaps best
known for winter bird-watching opportunities\, especially for folks intere
sted in northern owls\, finches\, and boreal forest specialists. What many
visitors don’t realize while visiting in the cold and snow of winter is
that the same species can be seen year-round. The greater Sax-Zim Bog eco
system has a lot to offer in every season\, supporting diverse ecology and
biology year-round. This presentation will cover some background on the r
egion\, share a little about the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog\, and highlight th
e seasons and what makes this place so unique! If you have been wanting to
visit the area but haven’t been able to decide when\, this talk will be
a great introduction to how and when to visit the Sax-Zim Bog. \nClinton
Dexter-Nienhausis is the Head Naturalist for the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog\,
a position that he has held for 10 years. He is an Environmental Educator
and Naturalist\, and as Head Naturalist for the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog\, C
linton’s roles vary\, including teaching and scheduling education field
trips in the Sax-Zim Bog\, teaching Minnesota Master Naturalist courses\,
coordinating a number of Citizen Science endeavors in the Sax-Zim Bog\, an
d documenting and identifying all species found in the Sax-Zim Bog. His in
terests in the natural world include fish\, dragonflies and damselflies\,
 birds\, reptiles and amphibians\, moths and butterflies\, lichens\, prairi
