DESCRIPTION:Ajahn Kovilo is an Ohio-born Theravāda forest monk. Having be
en introduced to meditation\, the five precepts\, and the Pāli Canon thro
ugh the Goenka tradition\, Ajahn Kovilo’s growing interest in Dhamma led
him to enter the monastery in 2006 in hopes of devoting his life to pract
ice. Ajahn Kovilo received full ordination from Ajahn Pasanno and Ajahn Am
aro at Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery in California in 2010\, and spent the
next decade training at monasteries and with teachers of the Ajahn Chah t
radition in America and Thailand – Ajahn Jayasaro and Luang Por Piak mos
t especially. During this time\, in addition to learning the basic crafts
 of being a forest monk (hand-sewing\, broom-making\, crochet\, etc.)\, and
engaging in much memory practice (See “A Fun Way to Memorize Long Dhamm
a”)\, Ajahn Kovilo also studied Pāli and Thai helping to collate\, edit
\, and produce a number of Dhamma books including: “Thus Should You Trai
n Yourselves”\, “The Pra Farang Thai Primer”\, “Stillness Flowing
”\, and the digital edition of “Buddhadhamma”. \nIn 2020\, Ajahn Kov
ilo spent a year practicing meditation at the Pa Auk International Meditat
ion Center in Angthong\, Thailand\, after which he enrolled at Dharma Real
m Buddhist University in Ukiah\, California. There he studied Pāli and Sa
nskrit while learning more about many of the main texts and practices of C
hinese Mahāyāna Buddhism: Chan meditation\, compassion meditation on Gua
 nyin’s name\, and bowing practice\, among others. During his studies\, A
jahn Kovilo also spent time at Chuang Yen Monastery studying with Bhikkhu
Bodhi. \nIn May of 2024\, Ajahn Kovilo moved full-time to Seattle\, WA to
continue helping to found Clear Mountain Monastery with his good friend\,
Ajahn Nisabho. Ajahn Kovilo is deeply grateful for the guidance and compas

an opportunity to offer emotional support\, make connection\, learn\, lis

DESCRIPTION:This is a monthly practice group dedicated to support people w
ho are interested in developing Mindfulness. We will be using the RAIN pra
ctice\, developed by Tara Brach. RAIN is an easy-to-use tool for bringing
mindfulness\, compassion\, and loving self-awareness to emotional difficul
ties: \n\nRecognize what is going on\nAllow the experience to be there\, j
ust as it is\nInvestigate with kindness and interested curiosity\nNurture
yourself with self-compassion\n\nParticipants will be offered a guided med
itation designed to lead you through the steps of identifying and processi
ng the challenges which come up in life. Our time will be dedicated to the
practice of learning to become more mindful with everyday life experience
s\, and the emotions that come from them. Students will also spend time wo
rking with self-compassion and self-kindness practices\, and the Metta Med
itation. \nThe RAIN Practice Group will meet monthly in the Library of the
Sacramento Dharma Center. Sessions will be on the 2nd Tuesday of every mo
 nth from 6:30-8:00 pm\, starting Tuesday\, January 14\, 2025. A $10-$20 dr
op-in donation for SBMG is encouraged\; no one will be turned away for lac
k of funds. Those who have Mindfulness training\, or who have worked with
Tara Brach’s RAIN material\, will have the background they need to parti
cipate. The group will be led by Michele Mira Livingston\, with special gu

DESCRIPTION:Click here to register \nAs we engage with the path of Buddhis
t meditation it becomes clear that practice is not about becoming someone
else (a more evolved and peaceful person). Instead\, our steady practice c
reates openings for our ‘authentic selves’ to emerge beyond the fog of
reactivity\, conditioning\, and well-entrenched patterns of personal suff
ering.  The gift of meditation practice is that we learn to meet life cha
llenges and skillfully show up for ourselves and others. \nIn this six-ses
sion class series\, oriented to all levels of experience\, we will explore
how meditation practices and Buddhist teachings serve to liberate us from
our default\, well-worn ways of dealing with the world\; provide a base f
or authentic expression\; and nourish the ground for greater personal sere
nity. The class environment will be compassionate\, safe\, and humorous\,
and skepticism and enthusiasm are equally embraced. \nAndrew Bein\, Ph.D.

DESCRIPTION:After finishing college in 2012\, Ven. Nisabho (addressed as
“Ajahn Nisabho” in the Thai custom) left his native Washington to go f
orth as a Buddhist monk in Thailand. He received full ordination the follo
wing spring under Ajahn Anan\, a senior disciple of renowned meditation ma
ster\, Ajahn Chah\, and spent the following years training in forest monas
teries throughout Thailand\, Australia\, and the US. While staying with so
me of the lineage’s most respected teachers\, he grew to believe the Tha
i Forest Tradition’s balance of communal life with solitary forest dwell
ing\, careful adherence to the monastic precepts\, and focus on meditation
represented a faithful embodiment of the original Buddhist path. Moreover
\, his time with contemporary masters such as Ajahn Anan\, Ajahn Pasanno\,
and Ajahn Jayasaro\, convinced him that such a path could yield great fru
it in the heart even amidst the complexities of modern life. Ajahn Nisabho
currently lives on the outskirts of Seattle\, where he moved in 2021 in o
rder to help found Clear Mountain monastery. \nAjahn Nisabho’s articulat
ion of Dhamma draws deeply from the early Pali texts and Thai Forest maste
rs. While modern instructors frequently describe samādhi\, or concentrat
ion\, as a narrow sense of focus\, Ajahn Nisabho emphasizes a broad unific
ation of mind based in the somatic sense\, subtle body\, and breath. Such
a perspective\, grounded in the teachings of contemporary masters such Aja
hn Ṭhānissaro and Ajahn Sucitto\, uses the sixteen steps of the Ānāp
ānasati Sutta as a basis and works with\, rather than against\, the moder
n thinking mind. Additionally\, Ajahn Nisabho raises up other practices\,
such as the Sound of Silence\, loving-kindness\, and insight meditation. \

DESCRIPTION:Each fourth Sunday\, Family Sangha welcomes parents\, guardian
 s\, grandparents\, aunts and uncles\, to bring their child(ren)\, ages 3
 — 15\, to enjoy a monthly program from 10am to 11:45. Each session focus
es on how we can create our lives grounded in kindness and mindfulness. Ac
tivities such as dharma teachings\, mindful movement and yoga\, singing\,
art projects\, gardening\, snacks\, and outside play\, help us practice th
e basic teachings of the Buddha in a non-sectarian approach.  And — hav
e fun! with others hoping to bring more compassion to our world. \nFamily
Sangha depends on parent participation\, and adults must stay near their c
hild and take responsibility for them through the morning. We rely on volu
nteers and occasional teachers to lead the programs. Please consider ways
to contribute. We welcome your imagination and love of the dharma — mayb
e you’d enjoy offering an art project\, an outdoor cooperative game\, rh
ythm\, or stories. \nDana/donations are appreciated for supplies and stipe

rom Valley Streams Zen Sangha and Sacramento Insight Meditation \nFor more
