DESCRIPTION:ASIS gallery is pleased to present The Psychological Ledger: a
n exhibition of work by visiting artist\, Anne Muntges\, and URochester fa
culty Mizin Shin.\n\nAnne Muntges will talk about her work on 9/15\, at 3p
m\, in Sage Art Center (sculpture space). A reception is to follow from 4-
6pm in the gallery. This event is open to all students\, faculty\, staff\,
and the greater Rochester community. \n\nDescribing their work\, the arti
 sts say\,\n\nAnne Muntges:\n\nThrough drawing\, sculpture\, and site-speci
fic installation\, I map the hidden infrastructures of the environments we
inhabit\, balancing my gaze between the collective systems of the city an
d the intimate\, domestic taxonomies of personal survival. My practice exa
mines the constant friction between our desire for individual privacy and
our total reliance on the structures\, spaces\, and strangers around us. U
sing technical pens and other drawing tools\, I translate these transient
moments into life-sized environments\, turning flat drawings into walkable
architectural ruins that embody the tactile weight and immateriality of s
hared time.\n\nThis slow\, obsessive drafting process functions as a conti
nuous\, systematic archive. My work stems from navigating a massive\, over
whelming emotional and environmental weight\; for me\, the only way to sur
vive it is to build a beautiful\, meticulous cage around it with thousands
of tiny ink lines. Whether I am documenting the overlooked systems of pub
lic maintenance or sorting through the fractured pieces of my own everyday
coping mechanisms\, I treat the page as a psychological ledger. This fier
cely disciplined method gives a profound sense of permanence to the fleeti
ng markers of our surroundings\, proving that tracking the invisible upkee
p of a city is deeply tied to the daily preservation required to keep a hu
man life in motion.\n\n \n\nThis investigation moves fluidly between the m
icroscopic and the monumental\, living in hand-held ephemera and scaling u
p to rigid wooden frameworks layered with heavy\, wallpapered paper. By co
nstantly balancing distinct drawing styles and building deep nuance direct
ly into the surfaces of these objects\, I create a crazy\, immersive world
that pulls the viewer entirely inside. Ultimately\, this grounded\, deepl
y human accumulation of marks serves as a physical record of endurance\, c
reating a space where we are forced to confront what it feels like to pay
radical\, urgent attention to the fragile systems that keep us whole.\n\n
\n\nMizin Shin:\n\nBlended Complexities examines the omnipresence of the i
ndustrial corn economy through the lens of everyday consumer goods. The wo
rk maps an expansive index of consumption\, tracing corn as both a central
ingredient as well as an invisible presence underlying many industrial ma
nufacturing processes. Dispersed throughout our daily routines\, fragments
of this single crop reveal the quietly expanding infrastructure of modern
capital and production. While Blended Complexities is depicted as a mappi
ng of connectivity through corn\, it acts as a broader critique of system
relationality and how diverse material items (and the economies surroundin
 g them) are fundamentally linked.\n\n \n\nMore about the artists:\n\nAnne
Muntges (b. 1982) earned her BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art I
nstitute in 2005 and her MFA in Printmaking from the University at Buffalo
in 2008. Based in Brooklyn\, she focuses on highly detailed drawings\, pr
ints\, and installations. Her work has been exhibited nationally at the Ch
ildren’s Museum of the Arts in Manhattan\, the Ukrainian Institute of Mo
dern Art in Chicago\, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo. Mos
t recently\, her work is featured in Monumental Drawing at the More Museum
in Gorssel\, NL. Muntges’ art is held in collections such as the Califo
rnia College of the Arts\, the Library of Congress\, the Joan Flasch Artis
ts’ Book Collection\, and the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Among her nu
merous accolades\, she was awarded the NYFA/NYSCA Fellowship in 2014\, Sus
tainable Arts Finalist in 2021\, and Interlude Grantee. Since 2010\, she h
as participated in prestigious residencies and fellowships\, including the
Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts\, BRIC\, the Roswell Artist-in-Residen
ce Program\, and the Monira Foundation Artist Residency.\n\n \n\nBorn and
raised in South Korea\, Mizin Shin is a US-based visual artist. Regularly
leading printmaking workshops with collaborating art organizations\, Shin
focuses on both traditional and contemporary printmaking practices while p
romoting a multidisciplinary approach to the medium. Her work has been exh
ibited nationally and internationally at institutions across the United St
 ates\, Belgium\, Spain\, the UK\, India\, and South Korea. She was a juror
for The Paths We Cross: Perspectives from the Korean Diaspora\, 2022 Scre
enprint Biennial\, and 2021 Southern Tier Biennial. Shin is the recipient
of several fellowships and awards\, including the Civitella Ranieri Fellow
 ship\; the University of Rochester Humanities Center Faculty Fellowship\;
the Andrew & Barbara Choi Foundation Project Grant\; and Genesee Valley Co
uncil on the Arts.Mizin Shin graduated from Hong-ik University with a B.F.
A in Printmaking and received her M.F.A from the State University of New Y
ork at Buffalo. Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art &
Art History at the University of Rochester as well as a co-founder of Mira

DESCRIPTION:American values take shape in the objects we make\, desire\, c
herish\, and discard. A table laden with ripe fruit\, a meal served up at
a luncheonette\, the inside of a medicine cabinet—ordinary materials aro
und us chronicle our lives. The still life\, a genre of art that dates bac
k to the ancient world\, captures those objects of everyday life while oft
en conveying deeper meanings and hidden messages.\n\nAs we celebrate the 2
50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, Desir
e and Abundance features a selection from MAG’s collection of American s
till lifes\, spanning from the 1800s to the present. Taken together\, thes
e artworks present an array of items that underscore shifting tastes in Am
erican art\, commerce\, and daily life.\n\nImage: John Francis\, Still Lif

DESCRIPTION:Join us to hear from Michael Ruggiero about his research here
 at URochester!\n\n \n\nAbstract: Terahertz (THz) vibrational spectroscopy\
 , occurring at frequencies of 0.1 – 10 THz or 3 – 330 cm-1\, provides
direct access to low-frequency phonons that govern collective molecular mo
tions in crystalline materials. Unlike traditional mid-IR methods (i.e\, F
TIR) that most often probe intramolecular motions\, terahertz lattice dyna
mics encode information about intermolecular forces that can provide insig
ht into various properties ranging from crystal packing\, mechanical respo
nse\, and structural changes. These vibrations are highly-excited at ambie
nt conditions\, and therefore they are responsible for a host of dynamic p
roperties such as thermal expansion and solid-state reactivity. \n\n \n\nB
y combining experimental terahertz time-domain and low-frequency Raman spe
ctroscopy with solid-state density functional theory\, it is possible to n
ot only assign complex terahertz spectra with confidence\, but also to con
nect individual phonon modes to specific stimuli-responsive phenomena. Thi
s work highlights how these capabilities can be used to understand\, and u
ltimately control\, the behavior of molecular solids. collective phonons n
ot only report on reactivity but may actively influence reaction pathways\
, providing new opportunities to predict\, understand\, and eventually man
ipulate chemistry in the solid state. \n \n\nHost: Ignacio Franco | ignaci

DESCRIPTION:As artificial intelligence grows more capable\, a familiar anx
iety resurfaces: will humans become unnecessary? This talk argues for a di
fferent answer — one in which the goal is not to compete with AI but to
build the interfaces through which humans and AI collaborate at their mutu
al best. Within the decade\, digital overlays driven by contextual AI will
begin reshaping how we perceive and navigate the world — enhancing surg
ical precision\, transforming how students learn\, and redefining what it
means to interact with a computer. The question is not whether this transi
tion will happen\, but who will design it and toward what ends. The Univer
sity of Rochester's Center for Extended Reality (CXR) brings together facu
 lty across engineering\, medicine\, neuroscience\, education\, and the hum
anities to pursue that design challenge as a shared mission. This talk pre
sents CXR's transdisciplinary framework — spanning hardware innovation i
 n optics and display\, human-computer interface research\, applied clinica
l development\, and ethical governance — and explains why Rochester's ex
isting strengths make it a natural hub for this work. The audience will he
ar how each school and division on campus connects to this agenda\, and ho
w CXR aims to advance Rochester's core missions of education\, research\,
and health through a coherent\, collaborative vision of what human-AI inte
 raction can and should become.
