Responded to ap proximately 185 contractor requests and provided various forms of technica l guidance to numerous property owners through our Old House Help program. Collaborated with several neighborhood associations\, organizations\, and Rochester’s Department of Environmental Services to successfully design ate the Cobb’s Hill Park Preservation District. Partnered to pursue loca l landmark designation and protection for the Cutler Mail Chute Company Bu ilding in Rochester. While unsuccessful through the city process\, The Lan dmark Society filed an Article 78 lawsuit – the only appeal process offe red through the city’s code – to further advocate for this important b uilding. Twelve projects successfully completed capital projects and recei ved grant reimbursements through the Genesee Valley Rural Revitalization G rant program\, administered by The Landmark Society in partnership with th e NY State Historic Preservation Office. Facilitated the 2025 New York Sta tewide Preservation Conference in Poughkeepsie\, with 310 people in attend ance from across New York State and beyond. Partnered with author Steve Jo rdan to co-write and publish The Historic House Handbook. Hosted four book events\, a webinar\, and an appearance on Connections with Evan Dawson\, selling over 250 copies to date. H osted a press conference and engaged with multiple media outlets to announ ce and promote the 2025 Five to Revive list. Our annual Preservation Award s ceremony was held at the Little Theater\, honoring some of the best pres ervation projects in western New York. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Programs and ToursHosted a sold-out\, one-day to ur at the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Boynton House\, welcoming 2 25 guests. Continued supporting the Rochester Historical Society in revita lizing its collection management\, public outreach\, board training\, and expanding its program offerings. Nearly 1\,100 people attended our annual House and Garden Tour—the highest attendance since before COVID—along with more than 500 guests at Ghost Walk and 650 participants at the Inside Downtown Tour. Ellwanger Garden Open Days welcomed over 230 visitors. Ove r 1\,200 students and teachers from 13 different schools attended our prog ram\, Walk the Walk: Encounters with Rochester’s African American Ancest ors. This year also involved high school mentor students from East High Sc hool’s Advanced-African American studies program. More than 1\,100 stude nts took guided field study tours at the Stone-Tolan Historic site\, learn ing about our heritage and what it takes to form a community. Partnered wi th teachers from Genesee Community Charter School to incorporate our local botanical and landscape history into their 2nd and 3rd grade program. Our architecture-themed travel program\, Landmark Travels\, took participants across the globe this year—from a winter journey by bus and train to Mo ntreal and Quebec City for Winter Carnival\, to a yacht cruise exploring S pain and Africa\, and a scenic voyage along Portugal’s Douro River. St. Joseph’s Park\, in collaboration with the Eastman Community Music School and the University of Rochester Dance Department\, presented a vibrant se ason of performances\, featuring five concerts\, four community dance even ts\, and a sold-out staging of The Tempest by Shake on the Lake. Additiona l partnerships connected concerts with Architecture on the Go! walking tou rs\, inviting audiences to explore art\, architecture\, and community in a shared experience. This acknowledgment is a tremendous ho nor and a reflection of years of hard work by our animal care and animal h ealth teams!   The SSP is responsible for managing healthy and geneticall y diverse assurance populations of animals across AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums. By coordinating breeding recommendations and animal transfers\, the program helps secure a brighter future for some of your favorite spec ies. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n A major factor in Seneca Park Zoo being selected as a gi raffe holding facility was our team’s incredible success in giraffe trai ning. Giraffes are among the most challenging animals to train\, requiring extraordinary patience\, consistency\, and trust-building due to their na turally cautious nature. As a smaller zoo with a highly experienced animal care team\, we are uniquely positioned to provide the individualized atte ntion and dedicated time needed to achieve these unique training milestone s. Giraffe training looks like active participation in healthcare. This in cludes voluntarily lifting their hooves for hoof care\, presenting differe nt parts of their bodies for ultrasounds\, participating in blood draws\, and even allowing facial radiographs\, all without the need for anesthesia . This not only reduces stress for the animals but also allows our team to provide more effective preventative care! Because of our ambitious traini ng program and our proximity to the Canadian border\, we are an ideal faci lity to help train and transport Masai giraffes. \n \n \n \n But how does Canada connect to this? The need for these transf ers is tied directly to the SSP’s efforts to maintain a healthy populati on. Under the direction of University of Rochester’s Program of Dance and Mo vement faculty member\, Anne Harris Wilcox\, this artful re-dedication tri bute is made in deference to the Mount Hope Cemetery site where hundreds o f people were re-buried after they were discovered during an excavation of Highland Park in 1984. The forensic investigation of the mass burial dete rmined that the bodies were people from Rochester’s 19th century insane asylum\, almshouse\, and the penitentiary. The Invisible No More ceremony is inspired by Mount Hope Cemetery’s and DePaul Mental Health’s effort s to honor these lost people and affirms the need for continued support of mental health in our community. \n\nCollaborating on the title piece\, a re choreographer Anne Wilcox and writer/composer Adam Wilcox\, along with beautiful professional dancers Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp\, Michelle Iklé \, Kaidence Pacheco\, Doreen Prempeh\, and Elyssia Primus. Historians Robe rt Riley\, Dr. Laurence Guttmacher and Dr. Ryan Thibodeau will share a br ief history of the dedication site and of Rochester’s role in mental hea lth care. Nanako Horikawa Mandrino will perform her elegant movement solo\ , The Flower of Remembering\, drawing from the rich symbolism of the red p oppy which Japanese culture associates with life’s transience. Analog\, a sound based practice by multi-instrumentalist\, adaptive teaching artis t\, and performer\, Sean Mulligan\, will provide improvisational accompani ment and sound bath ambience. Joining Sean is the gifted musician and soun d artist Greg Woodsbie\, who is known for his genre-bending performances\, blending jazz\, classical\, and Cuban influences across piano\, accordion \, and percussion. A brass quintet of Eastman School of Music students\, l ed by French hornist\, Kasey Gibbons\, will also contribute to the musical offerings. Invisible No More concludes with a public movement choir all owing all participants to join in the final portion of the dedication.\n\n In 2022 Wilcox directed the wildly successful dance/theater production Whe n the Souls Rise (WTSR) in Mount Hope Cemetery with a cast of 17 and compo ser/performer Ward Hartenstein\, as the Specter of Euphony. Over one thous and viewers attended the performances of WTSR. Her love of Mount Hope is evident in Invisible No More\, as well. Wilcox hopes this event will speak to the dignity of all human beings and the importance remembering our pas t.
