In comtemporary New York City\, the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA) has mapped over 700 of those languages\, including many that are in digenous\, primarily oral\, and little documented. Driven by new forms of mobility\, migration\, and the diasporization of nearly every ethnolinguis tic group\, many other diverse cities around the world are not far behind. In this talk\, Ross Perlin\, ELA’s co-director and author of the recent book Language City\, will describe New York's complex linguistic history and ELA’s efforts over the last 15 years\, before panning out to discuss the impact of migration\, diaspora\, and multilingualism on urban linguis tic diversity more generally\, with a range of political\, economic\, soci al\, and cultural implications.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nRoss Perlin\, Lec turer\, Department of Slavic Languages\, Columbia University\, is co-direc tor of the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA)\, a non-profit research inst itute focused on documenting and supporting endangered languages in New Yo rk City and beyond. A reception will follow. \n\nAfter gradu ating from the University of Rochester\, Mike attended graduate film schoo l at Columbia University’s School of the Arts\, where he met his longtim e writing partner\, Bill Martin. The two launched their television career in 1992 as writers on Fox’s popular sketch series In Living Color\, foll owed by additional sketch series before moving into half‑hour comedy wit h NBC’s Emmy‑winning 3rd Rock from the Sun\, starring John Lithgow. T hey spent five seasons and 110 episodes on 3rd Rock\, serving as showrunne rs beginning in season three\, then went on to create the Fox/WB comedy Gr ounded for Life\, which ran for five seasons.
