DESCRIPTION:Come see Tim Harper’s multimedia work this September! With a
background including Design\, Collage\, and Found Object Sculpture\, Tim
has a keen interest in projects that occupy the space between science and
art. He also creates public sculpture with his friend Matt Lively. \nHis p
ieces started as daily drawing exercises. Each morning\, Tim draws on a ta
blet with his morning coffee\, mostly birds and flowers. Eventually he sta
rted adding collage from old maps\, graphs\, charts\, and his own photos.
That grew into experiments transferring his digital collages to wood\, the
n adding more traditional collage/drawing/painting on top. He did not star
t with any plan for these pieces\; at each step he responded to what the i
magery was doing until he felt like something interesting was happening. S
ome of the collage elements are from old survey maps\, which included blan
k areas labeled ‘No Reliable Data Available.’ He thought that was a fi
tting title\, as many of the pieces include data suggesting a story\, but
 not necessarily a reliable one.

DESCRIPTION:What are ALEBRIJES?\nAlebrijes are brightly colored\, fantasti
cal creatures from Mexican folk art that often combine features from vario
 us animals—real and mythical—into a single\, surreal form. Originating
in the 1930s with artist Pedro Linares\, who dreamt of strange hybrid bei
ngs while ill and later recreated them in papier-mâché\, alebrijes are k
nown for their vivid colors\, intricate patterns\, and imaginative designs
. While originally not tied to spiritual beliefs\, many contemporary inter
pretations associate alebrijes with symbolic meanings\, including represen
tations of the four elements: earth\, air\, fire\, and water. For example\
, a creature might have wings for air\, scales for water\, claws for earth
\, and flames or bright colors symbolizing fire. Today\, they are celebrat
ed as iconic symbols of Mexican art\, appearing in festivals\, museums\, a
nd parades. We are excited to bring these magical creatures to the Garden
and plan to offer a variety of activities and programs to enhance the gues
t experience. This will be the first time the Alebrijes will be in a Botan
ical Garden\, and their first time visiting the East Coast!

DESCRIPTION:Apply now! The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to announce th
e 2026 Undergraduate Juried Exhibition\, juried by Stamatina Gregory\, Hea
d Curator and Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Leslie-Lohman
Museum of Art\, New York. Applications are open now through September 22n
d\, 2026! The exhibition will on view at The Anderson from November 12th-N
ovember 20th\, with an opening reception from 5-8pm on Thursday\, November
12th. \nThe Undergraduate Juried Exhibition (UJE) is open to currently en
rolled undergraduate students from all VCUarts Departments\, working indi
vidually or collaboratively in any media or discipline – or combination
thereof. If you are a current VCUarts undergrad\, you’re invited to appl
y! \nTHEME: Selected by our Juror\, the theme for the Fall 2026 Undergradu
ate Juried Exhibition is “Freedom and Constraint.” The theme is intend
ed to inspire rather than limit – the Juror will take a broad interpreta
tion of the theme and participants are encouraged to do the same. If you h
ave a work you’d like to submit but are unsure about its relationship to
the theme\, submit it! The Juror’s full prompt is provided here: \nFree
dom and Constraint:\n“Through published lists and guidelines affecting p
ublic websites\, grants\, and research communications\, the US federal gov
ernment has restricted the use of over 350 words and phrases\, from ‘acc
essible’ to ‘underrepresented.’ Related restrictions against speech
and terminology have been passed by state governments\, targeting higher e
ducation in particular. While regressive and indefensible\, restrictions o
n inclusive speech (‘inclusive’ also a banned term) also prompt a refl
ection on artmaking in this moment. \n“The tangle of complications and c
ontradictions that surround artmaking’s freedoms and constraints have as
much–or more–to do with a host of extralegal conditions. How do we sh
ape or constrain work\, consciously or unconsciously\, for instructors\, c
ommunity\, family\, disembodied strangers? How do we speak or make in code
s–and to stifling or liberatory ends? Art history is rife with examples
of work made under many different sets of conditions and constraints\, oft
en self-imposed. If we are ultimately constrained\, as Claudia Rankine has
pointed out\, by our own imaginations\, ‘creatures as limited as we our
selves are\,’ how can we find ways to productively\, even radically\, op
en up those limits?” \n – APPLY NOW! – \nTO APPLY\, PLEASE SUBMIT:
\n\nUp to 3 works (see file size and format requirements below for details
)\nA resume or CV\nAn artist statement\, up to 250 words\, that will help
the juror appreciate the meaning(s)\, material techniques\, concepts and/o

n Seismic Holler: An Appalachian Love Poem\, the artist synthesizes materi

DESCRIPTION:The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to present THE LATENT IMA
GE OF US\, a solo exhibition by guest artist Kei Ito. \nIto is a Baltimor
e-based interdisciplinary artist whose work expands photographic media thr
ough cameraless processes\, installation\, and chance-based material trans
formation. Working with light\, archive\, and ephemeral processes\, he exp
lores memory\, history\, and the invisible forces that shape human experie
nce. Drawing from his family history—his grandfather survived the atomic
bombing of Hiroshima and lived with the lasting trauma of family loss and
long-term health effects before eventually passing away from cancer—Ito
examines how individuals are shaped by global histories and political for
ces\, particularly those tied to war and national identity. Through his pr

DESCRIPTION:The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to announce Corpus: Sele
ctions from the Candela Collection\, an exhibition of photographic work b
y twenty-five artists from the collection of Candela Photographic Arts. Th
e exhibition will be on view at The Anderson from August 28th to October 1
7th with an opening reception on Friday\, August 28th from 5-7 pm.  \nCor
pus: Selections from the Candela Collection\, features twenty-five works f
rom the collection that directly and indirectly depict human forms. As a g
roup they speak to the history of representing bodies and how these circul
ated images can crystallize into visual archetypes\, solidify into icons\,
or produce genres. The artists push up against the limiting and adverse i
mpacts of these conventions by challenging historical forces of idealizati
on\, subverting prescribed identities\, and defiantly presenting the irrev
erent. Throughout the work\, the voice of the artists demand a say in the
power dynamics of interpreting visual history and a place in building the
corpus of images that impact individual agency by shaping our collective s
elf-understanding.  \nThe Candela Collection is a continually growing sel
ection of photographic work chosen from the annual Candela Photographic Ar
ts UnBound! Juried Exhibition. The call to artists both nationally and int
ernationally is free of charge and results in hundreds of submissions each
year. Selected work is on view at the gallery each summer\, and a number
of pieces are then purchased to become part of the collection. The curator
ial aim of the collection is to gather work in a wide variety of photograp
hic processes that reflect contemporary practices. The mission behind the
project is to directly support photographers through the purchase of the w
ork with the end-goal of donating the collection to an institution’s per
manent collection. After 16 iterations of the call\, the current collectio

DESCRIPTION:September is Hunger Action Month – and Feed More is calling
on Central Virginia to come together and help ensure nutritious meals are
within reach for our neighbors in need. \nThe nationwide campaign\, led by
Feeding America\, brings communities together to raise awareness about fo
od insecurity and find meaningful ways to make a difference. \nToday\, the
rising cost of everyday essentials is making it harder for families to af
ford the healthy food they need to thrive. Rising gas\, housing\, utility
and health care costs are putting added pressure on family budgets\, and m
ore neighbors are finding themselves making impossible choices — like wh
ether to fill the gas tank or the pantry\, buy fresh produce or medication
\, or pay a utility bill or buy groceries. For many\, that means visiting
a food pantry for the first time. \nAnd in Central Virginia\, we estimate
that 1 in 9 neighbors experience food insecurity – and of that\, 1 in 6
children in our region don’t know where their next meal will come from.
 \nAt Feed More\, we’re working every day to ensure families\, children\,
seniors and homebound neighbors have access to the nutritious food they n
eed. But we can’t do it alone. Hunger Action Month is an opportunity for
all of us to help make sure our neighbors can access healthy food for who
lesome meals. \nHere are three ways you can take action:\n\nVolunteer: Fro
m preparing and packaging food in our Bayard Community Kitchen or deliveri

ning and afternoon volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Fr
iday. Register through our online volunteer portal at: FeedMore.org/volunt

DESCRIPTION:This class is designed to provide foundational drawing skills
and inspire a sense of wonder and connection to the natural world. Any age
can learn to draw: marks on paper are all a drawing is\, and marks can be
made on paper by anyone. Despite this\, not everyone takes the time to le
arn how to draw. After all\, it isn’t easy to develop drawing skills wit
hout dedicated time. \nThis class provides the time\, motivation and inspi
ration for you to draw. You’ll learn to think like an artist\, get curio
us\, ask questions\, and play — all while learning how to draw. We start
with an overview of botanical art and learn about the benefits drawing pr
ovides for the brain and our physiology. Drawing habits and dealing with t
he inner critic are also discussed. \nUsing pencil marks on paper\, partic
ipants explore sketchbook work\, basic line qualities\, light on forms\, a
nd transforming reality into three-dimensional illusions. Sketching\, cont
our drawing\, negative space\, and measured drawing are also covered. Expe
rimentation\, questions\, and observations are encouraged in a relaxed and
inspiring environment. \nThis is a beginner’s class. All are welcome to
enroll. See class supply list below. \n\nFees: Member $274\, Non-Member $

DESCRIPTION:Center of the Universe Brewing Company (COTU) and Casa Herradu
ra are excited to announce a new partnership at COTU’s main taproom in t
he Hanover Airpark in Ashland\, VA\, beginning September 17th. \nCasa Herr
adura has just completed outfitting a brand new 28’ food trailer equippe
d with state-of-the-art appliances including an automated fresh tortilla m
aker\, rotisserie\, fryers\, and everything else you would need in a stand
ard brick and mortar location.  It is a complete mobile chef’s kitchen
ready to bring the level of quality and freshness that Ashland residents a
nd visitors have come to expect from their flourishing location on Rt. 54
in Ashland. \nCasa Herradura’s original location has been operating sinc
e 2021 in Downtown Ashland.  They aimed to bring a community focused rest
aurant that concentrated not only on the quality of the food\, but also it
s impact on their community.  Though various sponsorships concentrating o
n the local schools and college\, Casa Herradura quickly cemented itself a
s a gathering place for everyone in the community.  They are so grateful
for the support in return and wanted to expand their presence even further
to continue on that tradition of quality food\, quality service\, and qua
lity community support. \n“We are very excited about this partnership wi
th Center of the Universe Brewing Company. Ashland is home to Casa Herradu
ra\, and being able to continue growing within the community that has supp
orted us means a lot to us. We believe great food brings people together\,
and great food goes even better with a great beer. We’re excited to bri
ng our authentic Mexican flavors\, fresh tortillas\, and family traditions
to COTU and create a place where our community can come together\, eat\,
drink\, and have a great time.” – José Batista\, Owner of Casa Herrad
ura. \nCasa Herradura Mobile Kitchen will be kicking things off at the bre
 wery with a soft opening on Thursday\, September 17th from 4pm – 9pm dur
ing COTU’s weekly trivia event\, offering guests a chance to try the new
food option a day before their official grand opening\, which is being he
ld on Friday\, September 18th.  For the grand opening\, the brewery will
be hosting live music from Jimmy Fitch from 5:30pm – 7:30pm and offering
dinner specials all evening during the 4pm – 9pm service window.  Goin
g forward\, you can enjoy Casa Herradura Thursday through Sunday every wee
k during regular taproom hours.  As an added bonus\, the 2 companies have
already started collaborating on fun themed days and nights\, creating a
unique food and beverage experience each time you visit. \n“We have been
searching for a collaborative food vendor for our brewery for quite a whi
le and couldn’t be more thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Ca
sa Herradura.  I personally eat at their main restaurant several times a
month and consider if one of the best Mexican Restaurants in Central Virgi
nia.  We cannot wait to get started!” – Chris Ray\, Owner of Center o
 f the Universe Brewing Co. \nThursdays: Trivia and Tacos (6pm – 8pm)
 – Take part or just enjoy the show as COTU hosts free trivia every Thurs
day where teams or solo players compete for gift cards.  Casa Herradura w
ill be running tacos specials all night. \nFridays: Fiesta Fridays (6pm
 – 8pm) – Free live music at the brewery every Friday while enjoying de
licious and fresh Mexican cuisine. \nSaturdays: Select Pairing Saturday (1

Bring 3 of your friends for this three-ring-circus of improvisational tale

an Hicks\, Madeline Smith\, Nick Tenaglia \nAct II: Power Nap - Drift away
to the dulcet tones of Power Nap\, an improv troupe that’s perfect to s
tudy/relax to! Power Nap performs an improv form known as the ‘Spokane\,
’ AKA the ‘Pretty Flower\,’ which starts with a group of people in a

McKay Fritz\, Nate Shepherd\, Amber Swensen \nAct III: Horse Apples often
refers to themselves as "the best damn comedy in RVA\," and they're hoping
the tagline will catch on. With 10\,000 shows & 120 years combined stage
time\, these guys have wasted huge chunks of their lives on comedy. You’

DESCRIPTION:The Henrico Police Animal Shelter is hosting an outdoor pet
adoption event (rain or shine). Cats and dogs are looking for loving homes
! \nCommunity members are invited to meet pets available for adoption and
help future animals in need of care. Thanks to the sponsorships from Henr
ico Humane Society\, Furbish Thrift and the William A. Harrison Jr. Fou
ndation\, any dogs who are already spayed or neutered are ready to go home
with their new families the same day as adoption! \nPets who have not alr
eady been spayed or neutered will have additional fees for their procedure
 s. The spay or neuter will be scheduled upon adoption and will be ready to
go home with their families shortly after! \nThese events are wonderful o
pportunities for attendees to meet our pets in-person and to see who they
connect with! \nAdopters must be 18 or older\, but are not required to be
Henrico County residents. Adopters will need to have a valid photo ID and
pay an adoption fee\, which varies upon the spay/neuter status of the pet.
\nAll pets available for adoption can be viewed online on our PetFinder
  and AdoptaPet pages.
