 cated based on creativity in response to the prompt and design fundamental
 s. Fifteen artists will be accepted. \nThe exhibition is scheduled for Sep
 tember 25 – October 17 in the Sponge Gallery on the top floor of The And
 erson\, with an opening reception on September 25. Exhibitors are expecte
 d to deliver their own posters to The Anderson. Please note that the Ander
 son is not equipped with an elevator. \nThis exhibition is organized by Ja

 The Medium is the Massage: An inventory of Effects” is an experimental 
 manifesto created in collaboration by Marshall McLuhan and Quentin Fiore\,
  produced by Jerome Agel. It was published in 1967 and became widely ackno
 wledged by creatives and influential within design history. The title come
 s from a phrase that McLuhan often used\, “The medium is the message.”
  McLuhan changed “message” to “massage” to signify the ways in whi
 ch various types of media can stimulate human consciousness. The book itse
 lf experiments with graphics\, photography\, and typography\, while expres
 sing both commentary and ideation on society’s interactions with media. 
 It also plays with physical creation techniques like collaging. \nThe Medi
 um is the Massage aims to show the human connections to mainstream media 
 and the ways in which it is used as an extension of human senses. Media ha
 s the essential abilities to both ground us in a physical sense\, to serve
  as a tool to perceive and interpret the world around us. This show\, The
  Medium is the Mess\, is about pushing the boundaries of how a poster is c
 onceptualized. We want artists and designers to create outside of the digi
 tal space\, use their hands\, and get messy. Think beyond a piece of paper
  in terms of the poster format\, experiment with materiality\, texture\, a
 nd composition\, while still maintaining typographic fundamentals using a

 r 25\,000 objects: resulting exhibitions include Coyote Park: I Love You L

 ruser works across and between media to reinterpret commonly perceived bin
 aries\, such as sick versus well\, synthetic versus organic\, and body ver
 sus landscape. In Seismic Holler and the accompanying risograph publicatio
 n Seismic Holler: An Appalachian Love Poem\, the artist synthesizes materi
 al research grounded in sites of fossil fuel mining and familial histories
  in North and South Central Appalachia. Layering geological\, botanical\, 
 and medical elements with earth pigments and biopolymers\, Showers-Cruser 
 considers “transcorporeal” ties between land and human bodies when fac

 GE OF US\, a solo exhibition by guest artist Kei Ito.  \nIto is a Baltimor
 e-based interdisciplinary artist whose work expands photographic media thr
 ough cameraless processes\, installation\, and chance-based material trans
 formation. Working with light\, archive\, and ephemeral processes\, he exp
 lores memory\, history\, and the invisible forces that shape human experie
 nce. Drawing from his family history—his grandfather survived the atomic
  bombing of Hiroshima and lived with the lasting trauma of family loss and
  long-term health effects before eventually passing away from cancer—Ito
  examines how individuals are shaped by global histories and political for
 ces\, particularly those tied to war and national identity. Through his pr
 actice\, he creates spaces to reflect on multiple perspectives through whi
 ch historical events and national symbols are understood\, as well as the 
 invisible legacies they leave behind.  \nThe exhibition will be on view f

 ctions from the Candela Collection\, an exhibition of photographic work b
 y twenty-five artists from the collection of Candela Photographic Arts. Th
 e exhibition will be on view at The Anderson from August 28th to October 1
 7th with an opening reception on Friday\, August 28th from 5-7 pm.  \nCor
 pus: Selections from the Candela Collection\, features twenty-five works f
 rom the collection that directly and indirectly depict human forms. As a g
 roup they speak to the history of representing bodies and how these circul
 ated images can crystallize into visual archetypes\, solidify into icons\,
  or produce genres. The artists push up against the limiting and adverse i
 mpacts of these conventions by challenging historical forces of idealizati
 on\, subverting prescribed identities\, and defiantly presenting the irrev
 erent. Throughout the work\, the voice of the artists demand a say in the 
 power dynamics of interpreting visual history and a place in building the 
 corpus of images that impact individual agency by shaping our collective s
 elf-understanding.  \nThe Candela Collection is a continually growing sel
 ection of photographic work chosen from the annual Candela Photographic Ar
 ts UnBound! Juried Exhibition. The call to artists both nationally and int
 ernationally is free of charge and results in hundreds of submissions each
  year. Selected work is on view at the gallery each summer\, and a number 
 of pieces are then purchased to become part of the collection. The curator
 ial aim of the collection is to gather work in a wide variety of photograp
 hic processes that reflect contemporary practices. The mission behind the 
 project is to directly support photographers through the purchase of the w
 ork with the end-goal of donating the collection to an institution’s per
 manent collection. After 16 iterations of the call\, the current collectio
 n includes 149 photographic artworks and fine art photography books with a

 Exceptions\, an exhibition of artwork by Halima Bachir-Bouiadjra\, a doub
 le major student in Sculpture + Extended Media and Philosophy of Science\,
  class of 2028. The exhibition features an installation centered on a recr
 eated hole in the wall and a “fruit fountain\,” constructing a parafic
 tional space where distance\, depth\, and time become unstable. Drawing lo
 osely from Zeno of Elea’s distance paradoxes\, the work uses humor and s
 patial illogic to undermine orientation and causal logic. Originally stage
 d in an apartment using sound to extend the illusion of space\, the projec
 t was later restaged in the Murray DePillars Building\, where each iterati
 on references and reconfigures the last\, folding the work into its own te
 mporal paradox. \nThe exhibition will be on view from August 28th – Sept

 e it. \nThe first cinematic portrait of the beloved American poet\, the fi
 lm shares never-before-seen personal photos\, notebooks and letters from h

  New York\; DOCUMENT\, Chicago\; and the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center\,
  among others. Her work was included in the Whitney Biennial 2026 and 2021
  New Museum Triennial and has been included in group exhibitions at instit
 utions such as The San Jose Art Museum\, The Phoenix Art Museum\, Carnegie
  Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh\; the Whitney Museum of American Art\; the Asp

DESCRIPTION:VCU Theatre Department’s production of William Shakespeare
 ’s Romeo & Juliet is an exploration of identity\, archetype\, and the na
 vigation of internal desire in relation to the external expression of the 
 self. In what ways do we elect to “perform” roles that are often out o
 f alignment with our true inner selves? When the comedy of life turns trag
 ic\, how can we break from constricting societal expectations\, cultural l
 imitations\, and inherited trauma to expand through perceived endless cycl
 es and into undefined territory? \n \nIn this production\, the timeless t
 ale and classic text are approached from a collective of unique perspectiv
 es that dare to confront both the structure of the story itself and the in
 tentional framing of it. In the midst of overwhelming life circumstances\,
  how can we empower ourselves to reclaim what was always ours to hold dear
 ? \nABOUT THE DIRECTOR \nIrene Kuykendall\,  is a director\, actor\, and 
 educator with a Master’s in Text & Performance from the Royal Academy of
  Dramatic Art in London and conservatory training from The American Musica
 l and Dramatic Academy in NYC. Directing credits include: The Cottage\, Mo
 riarty: A New Sherlock Holmes Mystery\, and A Broadway Christmas (Virginia
  Rep)\, GASLIGHT (Swift Creek Mill)\, The Importance of Being Earnest (Ric
 hmond Shakespeare at RTP)\, and Twelfth Night (RCT). Educational direction

 ize at the SXSW Film Festival\, aired on the acclaimed PBS series American
  Masters and screened theatrically and at festivals across the U.S. Her 20
 24 short Ghost Protists had its European premiere at International Film Fe
 stival Rotterdam and was included in exhibitions in São Paolo\, London\, 
 Uppsala\, Budapest\, Cornwall\, New Orleans and Chicago.  She is a Profes
 sor in the Department of Photography and Film at VCU’s School of the Art

DESCRIPTION:The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to present ReFashioned Ru
 nway. This juried exhibition invites VCUarts and fashion merchandising stu
 dents to create high fashion garments and accessories from pre-loved garme
 nts supplied by Pop Up Stop. Pop Up Stop is a faculty-led educational and 
 advocacy program dedicated to diverting post-consumer waste from landfills
  and incineration\, as well as spreading awareness about the connection be
 tween the way we treat our clothes and the textile waste crisis. Through t
 his interdisciplinary exhibit\, ReFashioned Runway aims to bring awareness
  to textile waste through clothing reuse and upcycling.  \nLearn More:\nJ

 mber 4\, 2026\, 11-1pm in the Pollak Building 5th floor that is required f
 or all interested applicants!  \nThis event will provide applicants with a
 n opportunity to document the original garments before they upcycle them f
 or the open call. The exhibition will be open from January 22 – February
  13\, 2027. Applicants can submit up to three pieces during the open call\
 , spanning from jewelry and accessories to full looks. Additionally\, if a
 n applicant would prefer to exhibit a photo of their piece rather than the
  physical garment\, there will be a separate application process. \n\nAppl
