DESCRIPTION:Rural Idaho. Difficult Memories. An estranged father’s house
to sell. From the acclaimed author of The Whale\, Little Bear Ridge Road
confronts issues as wide as galaxies and as intimate as family secrets.
\nAfter the death of his long-estranged father\, Ethan returns to the tiny
hometown he once escaped—only to find himself face to face with the onl
y family he has left: his sharp-tongued\, fiercely independent aunt. While
cleaning up years of a failing family\, the two are forced to confront ol
d pain\, unfinished conversations\, and the orbit that keeps pulling them
back to a place they want to leave. \nAt its core\, Little Bear Ridge Roa
d is a deeply human story about distance and return\, silence and understa

o show up for each other\, even when words fall short. \nPerformances on W

DESCRIPTION:This labor day weekend\, experimental musicians from all over
the United States will meet in Richmond for Commonwealth Sound Exchange\,
a three-day showcase welcoming the most exciting projects of our times\,
including Pharmakon\, Drew Daniel and MC Schmidt of electronic duo Matmos\
 , Steven Vitiello\, Robert Turman and more\, featuring noise\, avant-garde
\, electronic music\, gamelan\, ambient\, industrial and everything in bet
ween. \nCreated in the belief that the best art of the future will emerge
not from commercial ventures or academic initiatives\, but from artist-led
projects\, often with limited resources\, CSX testifies to the power of a
multi-generational underground\, and celebrates its ongoing achievements.
\nThe inaugural festival brings artists seldom together under one roof\,
an opportunity that has prompted some of them to prepare unique collaborat
ive projects for the festival: Drew Daniel (Matmos) and John Wiese (Sissy
Spacek\, Sun O)))) will play together\, avant-classical cellist Leila Bord
reuil will perform with noise artist Matt Boettke (Scant)\, and Starkey /
Feldi / Schmidt (Baltimore)\, features M.C. Schmidt (also of Matmos)\, wit
h Ben Starkey (Network Glass) and Obi Feldi (Two Weeks). Local musicians w
ill also be reorienting their work through new collaborations\, like the H
urtado / Mullany / Birchett trio\, and the duo of S.Sutton and Dashka Ston
 e. The festival features multiple ensemble performances\, including the re
union of Crazy Doberman (after three years)\, The University of Richmond G
amelan Raga Kusuma\, and the 8 Track Magic Orchestra\, which will feature
sound artist artist Gen Ken and 8 regional collaborators\, each armed with
a vintage 8-track machine\, recreating a rare performance art piece initi
ated in the 1990s at Generator Sound Art gallery in the East Village. \nTh
 e festival’s name\, Commonwealth Sound Exchange\, is not only a referenc
e to the Commonwealth of Virginia\, but to the original archaic etymology
of the word\, Commonweal\, which prior to its current definition referred
to what is shared and beneficial for the common good of a community. A sou
nd “exchange\,” likewise\, speaks to the soundwave’s immateriality.
Sound’s value appreciates as it circulates and can be infinitely replica
 ted\, bartered\, exchanged\, reworked\, re-recorded\, and remixed.
