DESCRIPTION:Apply now! The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to announce th
e 2026 Undergraduate Juried Exhibition\, juried by Stamatina Gregory\, Hea
d Curator and Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Leslie-Lohman
Museum of Art\, New York. Applications are open now through September 22n
d\, 2026! The exhibition will on view at The Anderson from November 12th-N
ovember 20th\, with an opening reception from 5-8pm on Thursday\, November
12th. \nThe Undergraduate Juried Exhibition (UJE) is open to currently en
rolled undergraduate students from all VCUarts Departments\, working indi
vidually or collaboratively in any media or discipline – or combination
thereof. If you are a current VCUarts undergrad\, you’re invited to appl
y! \nTHEME: Selected by our Juror\, the theme for the Fall 2026 Undergradu
ate Juried Exhibition is “Freedom and Constraint.” The theme is intend
ed to inspire rather than limit – the Juror will take a broad interpreta
tion of the theme and participants are encouraged to do the same. If you h
ave a work you’d like to submit but are unsure about its relationship to
the theme\, submit it! The Juror’s full prompt is provided here: \nFree
dom and Constraint:\n“Through published lists and guidelines affecting p
ublic websites\, grants\, and research communications\, the US federal gov
ernment has restricted the use of over 350 words and phrases\, from ‘acc
essible’ to ‘underrepresented.’ Related restrictions against speech
and terminology have been passed by state governments\, targeting higher e
ducation in particular. While regressive and indefensible\, restrictions o
n inclusive speech (‘inclusive’ also a banned term) also prompt a refl
ection on artmaking in this moment. \n“The tangle of complications and c
ontradictions that surround artmaking’s freedoms and constraints have as
much–or more–to do with a host of extralegal conditions. How do we sh
ape or constrain work\, consciously or unconsciously\, for instructors\, c
ommunity\, family\, disembodied strangers? How do we speak or make in code
s–and to stifling or liberatory ends? Art history is rife with examples
of work made under many different sets of conditions and constraints\, oft
en self-imposed. If we are ultimately constrained\, as Claudia Rankine has
pointed out\, by our own imaginations\, ‘creatures as limited as we our
selves are\,’ how can we find ways to productively\, even radically\, op
en up those limits?” \nTO APPLY\, PLEASE SUBMIT: \n\nUp to 3 works (see
file size and format requirements below for details)\nA resume or CV\nAn a
rtist statement\, up to 250 words\, that will help the juror appreciate th
e meaning(s)\, material techniques\, concepts and/or context of your work.

DESCRIPTION:The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to present Seismic Holler
\, the 2026 Excellence in Adjunct Research Exhibition of work by interdisc

er. The exhibition will be on view from August 28th – September 26th\, 2
 026\, with an opening reception on August 28th from 5 – 7pm. \nShowers-C
ruser works across and between media to reinterpret commonly perceived bin
aries\, such as sick versus well\, synthetic versus organic\, and body ver
sus landscape. In Seismic Holler and the accompanying risograph publicatio
n Seismic Holler: An Appalachian Love Poem\, the artist synthesizes materi
al research grounded in sites of fossil fuel mining and familial histories
in North and South Central Appalachia. Layering geological\, botanical\,
and medical elements with earth pigments and biopolymers\, Showers-Cruser
considers “transcorporeal” ties between land and human bodies when fac

ough cameraless processes\, installation\, and chance-based material trans
formation. Working with light\, archive\, and ephemeral processes\, he exp
lores memory\, history\, and the invisible forces that shape human experie

bombing of Hiroshima and lived with the lasting trauma of family loss and
long-term health effects before eventually passing away from cancer—Ito
examines how individuals are shaped by global histories and political for
ces\, particularly those tied to war and national identity. Through his pr

DESCRIPTION:The Anderson and VCUarts are pleased to announce Corpus: Sele
ctions from the Candela Collection\, an exhibition of photographic work b
y twenty-five artists from the collection of Candela Photographic Arts. Th
e exhibition will be on view at The Anderson from August 28th to October 1
7th with an opening reception on Friday\, August 28th from 5-7 pm.  \nCor
pus: Selections from the Candela Collection\, features twenty-five works f
rom the collection that directly and indirectly depict human forms. As a g
roup they speak to the history of representing bodies and how these circul
ated images can crystallize into visual archetypes\, solidify into icons\,
or produce genres. The artists push up against the limiting and adverse i
mpacts of these conventions by challenging historical forces of idealizati
on\, subverting prescribed identities\, and defiantly presenting the irrev
erent. Throughout the work\, the voice of the artists demand a say in the
power dynamics of interpreting visual history and a place in building the
corpus of images that impact individual agency by shaping our collective s
elf-understanding.  \nThe Candela Collection is a continually growing sel
ection of photographic work chosen from the annual Candela Photographic Ar
ts UnBound! Juried Exhibition. The call to artists both nationally and int
ernationally is free of charge and results in hundreds of submissions each
year. Selected work is on view at the gallery each summer\, and a number
of pieces are then purchased to become part of the collection. The curator
ial aim of the collection is to gather work in a wide variety of photograp
hic processes that reflect contemporary practices. The mission behind the
project is to directly support photographers through the purchase of the w
ork with the end-goal of donating the collection to an institution’s per
manent collection. After 16 iterations of the call\, the current collectio

Exceptions\, an exhibition of artwork by Halima Bachir-Bouiadjra\, a doub
le major student in Sculpture + Extended Media and Philosophy of Science\,
class of 2028. The exhibition features an installation centered on a recr
eated hole in the wall and a “fruit fountain\,” constructing a parafic
tional space where distance\, depth\, and time become unstable. Drawing lo
osely from Zeno of Elea’s distance paradoxes\, the work uses humor and s
patial illogic to undermine orientation and causal logic. Originally stage
d in an apartment using sound to extend the illusion of space\, the projec
t was later restaged in the Murray DePillars Building\, where each iterati
on references and reconfigures the last\, folding the work into its own te

DESCRIPTION:Ikebana is the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging in
which seasonal flowers\, branches\, and grasses are thoughtfully arranged
in vases using established techniques and artistic principles. More than
simply creating beautiful displays\, ikebana expresses the harmony between
nature and humanity. A key feature of its design is the use of three main
branches\, which form the foundation of each arrangement and symbolize ba
lance and connection. \nIn this class\, students will learn the fundamenta
ls of free style ikebana through the Koryu School\, a distinguished tradit
ion with more than 250 years of history in Japan. Participants will explor
e basic techniques\, design principles\, and the aesthetic philosophy of i
kebana while creating their own unique arrangements. \n\nFees: Member $55\

DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Poe Museum on Thursday\, October 1st for a Tell
-Tale Talk with author and professor Emily Ogden\, who will discuss her ne
west work\, Darkness Becomes Bright: On the Brief Life and Immortal Art of
Edgar Allan Poe. \n\n\n\nAbout Darkness Becomes Bright: \n\n\n\nA fascina
ting and intimate inquiry into the shadowy life and horrifyingly compellin
g work of Edgar Allan Poe\, and why we are drawn to darkness in art \n\n\n
\nSince Edgar Allan Poe’s mysterious death in 1849\, his stories and poe
ms have captivated millions of readers around the world. One hundred seven
ty-five years later\, why do we continue to descend into the darkness of
his imagination—and of the genres\, from horror to crime\, that he pione
ered? \n\n\n\nIn these spellbinding and singular book\, Whiting Creative N
onfiction Grant winner Emily Ogden plumbs the darkness within Poe and ente
rs it alongside him. She interweaves stories from his mysterious and tragi
c life—from his strange disappearances and tortured romances to his near
ly fatal use of opium—with those of his most famous readers and translat
ors\, including poet Charles Baudelaire\, writer Julio Cortázar\, and psy
choanalyst Marie Bonaparte\, a descendant of Napoleon and a patient of Sig
mund Freud. \n\n\n\nTracing their passionate attachments to Poe and Ogden
’s own—unexpectedly sparked when she taught an introductory Poe course
at the University of Virginia\, where Poe himself was once a student—Da
rkness Becomes Bright makes a different case for literature from the one
we most often hear (that it engenders empathy). This exquisite volume show
s how Poe’s vision and its echoes across the generations allows us to ma
ke peace with our own flawed humanity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n— \n\n\n\nEmi
ly Ogden is the author of On Not Knowing: How to Love and Other Essays (20
 22) and Credulity: A Cultural History of US Mesmerism (2018). The recipien
 t of a 2026 Guggenheim Fellowship\, a Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant\,
and a Mellon Fellowship in the Columbia Society of Fellows\, she is Profes
sor of English at the University of Virginia. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGene
