 \nAugust 20-October 15\, 2026\n\nReception: August 20\, 5-7 pm\n\n \n\nDra
wn together in graduate school by their mutual love of experimentation and
play\, Michelle Inez Hinojosa and Barbara Pearsall have built a collabora
tive practice around analogue animation and vibrant abstraction. Together\
, their work explores optical toys\, immersive installations\, and movemen
 t. Under the Tent: Whirling & Flickering features kaleidoscopic imagery\,
 flickering abstractions\, projection mapping\, a hidden trapdoor\, and han
d-cranked wheels that transform what viewers see. After searching for the
perfect venue\, they are thrilled to bring their collaborative installatio
n to UNC. Their first public artwork\, Turnabout Folly\, will debut in Lan
sing\, Michigan in Fall 2026.\n\n \n\nMichelle Hinojosa works at the inter
section of painting\, poetry\, and fiber art\, where she considers memory\
, intergenerational trauma\, and migration. Born in central Texas\, by way
of the fields of California and Northern Mexico\, Michelle uplifts tradit
ions of making that have provided much-needed stability to a family displa
ced. Michelle Hinojosa is an Assistant Professor of Art at Pennsylvania St
ate University.\n\n \n\nBarbara Pearsall is an artist and educator based i
n Michigan. Her art practice is attentive to how deviation from material c
onventions can subvert or metamorphose the role of institutions\, where he
r philosophical and political concerns manifest through material explorati
ons of the built environment. Her pieces seek to create illusory and unusu
al architectural conditions as a form of resistance\, interrupting real-wo
rld functionality to allow for alternative systems of order. She is an Ass
istant Professor of Foundations & Sculpture at Michigan State University.\

DESCRIPTION:The Data Science and AI Academy and the Laboratory for Analyti
c Sciences will co-host an AI Hot Topics session.\n\nIn many domains\, inc
luding writing software and translating text\, AI can now produce outputs
on par with or better than those of a competent human performer. But like
a skilled human\, AI sometimes makes mistakes — and for some critical sy
stems\, a mistake can have disastrous consequences.\n\nWhile we have decad
es of experience incorporating unreliable machine components into robust c
ritical systems (a sensor failure typically doesn't lead to an airplane fa
lling out of the sky)\, and even more experience crafting processes based
on unreliable human input (a single mistake by a healthcare provider is of
ten caught and corrected before causing patient harm)\, generative AI outp
uts are something new: While law firms have always hired newly minted lawy
ers\, only recently has AI become capable of writing a legal brief like a
law school grad. Do review and assurance processes developed for fallible
humans map unchanged to fallible AI?\n\nJascha Swisher\, technical staff a
t the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences\, will moderate the discussion. The
panelists will be:\n\nMike Green\, an AI engineering researcher at the La
boratory for Analytic SciencesMichelle Rodenburg\, a law and technology li

DESCRIPTION:The Before We Knew Better art exhibition brings together the w
ork of Lamar Whidbee and Chris Facey to reflect on joy\, memory and the ex
periences that shape us early in life. The exhibition looks to childhood a
s a place of imagination\, play and connection. Rather than seeing nostalg
ia as a way to escape the present\, the exhibition considers how memories
of joy can remind us of what still matters. Whidbee and Facey ask what we
carry with us from those early years and how those experiences continue to
influence our well-being\, relationships and sense of self. At a time whe
n conversations around mental health are increasingly important\, the exhi
bition offers space to pause\, reflect and reconnect with the moments that
first taught us about joy. \n\nThe exhibition will be available for viewi
ng in the art gallery at the African American Cultural Center on weekdays
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Aug. 17 and Sept. 25. Whidbee and Facey wil

DESCRIPTION:North Carolina’s 1776 Constitution grew out of two crises: a
n east-west power struggle that erupted into the War of the Regulation\, a
nd a fight for political representation against an increasingly hostile En
glish government. This lecture traces that story back to the religious and
political conflicts of 17th-century Britain\, through the migrations and
economic pressures that shaped colonial North Carolina\, to the document t
hat remains the state’s constitutional foundation today. \n\n \n\nThe le

DESCRIPTION:“Access\, Activism\, and Aesthetic Revision: Crip Methods fo
r Art History”\n\n \n\nThis talk brings together the core arguments of T
he Agency of Access: Contemporary Disability Art and Institutional Critiqu
 e (2024)\, Hospital Aesthetics: Disability\, Medicine\, Activism (2025)\,
and Rehabilitating the Asylum: Mental Health Justice and Contemporary Art
 (2027) to demonstrate that disability is not peripheral to canonical art\;
instead\, it is one of its most generative methodological engines to aris
e with the canon of 20th century art history. Across these three books\, A
manda Cachia develops what she calls a critical-aesthetic approach to acce
 ss\, care\, and confinement\, tracing how hospitals\, asylums\, and contem
porary art institutions function as overlapping architectures of power\, c
reativity\, and resistance. Moving between art history\, disability studie
s\, medical humanities\, institutional critique\, and the activist strateg
ies of contemporary disability artists\, Cachia shows how access operates
as an artistic medium and how care becomes an aesthetic category. By cente
ring disability as both method and material\, she proposes an art history
that is structurally transformed by the politics and poetics of access\, a
nd how pertinent historical artworks and movements can be reconfigured bas
ed on a crip revision. \n\n \n\nAmanda Cachia is Professor of Practice in
Museum Studies in the School of Art at the Herberger Institute for Design
and the Arts at Arizona State University and Affiliate Faculty in the Disa
bility Studies B.A. Her research interests include disability art history\
, theory and activism\, crip curatorial practices and access aesthetics\,
museums\, institutional critique\, and social justice\, and critical disab
ility approaches to translation\, movement\, medicine\, and health. Cachia
is the author of three books\, Rehabilitating the Asylum: Mental Health J
ustice and Contemporary Art\, (forthcoming 2027)\, Hospital Aesthetics: Di
sability\, Medicine\, Activism (2025)\, and The Agency of Access: Contempo
rary Disability Art and Institutional Critique (2024)\, the latter of whic
h was shortlisted for the College Art Association’s 2026 Charles Rufus M
orey Book Award. She is also editor of Curating Access: Disability Art Act
ivism and Creative Accommodation (2022)\, which includes over 40 internati
onal contributors. She is currently working on her fourth book project\, D
isability Art: A Political History. Since 2010\, Cachia has organized 20 a
rt exhibitions devoted to the work of disabled artists. She is currently d
eveloping the major touring exhibition Vital Signs: From Patient to Power
with Mid-America Arts Alliance and ExhibitsUSA\, which will be hosted by n
umerous galleries across the United States from 2027-2032. Cachia is also
a curatorial and disability advisor for a major exhibition being developed
about art and disability from the 19th century to the present at the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art in 2028.\n\n \n\nA weeknight or daytime permi

Ancient Nubia \n\n \n Ancient Nubia has a long and g
lorious past\, but it is frequently eclipsed in the public imagination by
its northern neighbor\, Egypt. Ancient Nubia: Excavating Treasures of the
Nile\, from the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, brings into the limelight t
he Kingdom of Kush\, an important civilization in the Middle Nile Valley\,
introducing visitors to its powerful kings and royal women and the materi
als excavated from their tombs and pyramids during the Harvard University
 – Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition more than 100 years ago.\nStunni
ng displays highlight the longevity of this almost forgotten kingdom throu
gh its three main historical periods spanning almost 3\,000 years\, speaki
ng to its cultural continuity and adaptation as well as its historical and
political connections to pharaonic Egypt.\nVisitors can learn about this
other powerful kingdom on the Nile from an archaeological perspective with
hands-on and digital interactives. A special display highlights a connect
ion to the NCMA’s very own Nubiologist and features recently donated Egy
ptian objects as comparatives to the Nubian ones in the exhibition. \
