atercolors by Suzanne Hetzel. With more than four decades of dedicated pra
ctice\, Hetzel has developed a signature approach that finds drama and del
ight in the overlooked beauty of the everyday world. Working primarily fro
m life and imagination on 100% rag paper with the finest archival pigments
\, she builds luminous\, richly layered compositions that pulse with color
and energy. Her work has been recognized by the National Watercolor Socie
ty\, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America\, Watercolor West\, and
the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society\, among others\, and has been feature
d three times in the prestigious annual publication Splash. Paintings from

DESCRIPTION:Art and Art History\n\nUnder the Tent: Whirling & Flickering\n
 \nAugust 20-October 15\, 2026\n\nReception: August 20\, 5-7 pm\n\n \n\nDra
wn together in graduate school by their mutual love of experimentation and
play\, Michelle Inez Hinojosa and Barbara Pearsall have built a collabora
tive practice around analogue animation and vibrant abstraction. Together\
, their work explores optical toys\, immersive installations\, and movemen
 t. Under the Tent: Whirling & Flickering features kaleidoscopic imagery\,
 flickering abstractions\, projection mapping\, a hidden trapdoor\, and han
d-cranked wheels that transform what viewers see. After searching for the
perfect venue\, they are thrilled to bring their collaborative installatio
n to UNC. Their first public artwork\, Turnabout Folly\, will debut in Lan
sing\, Michigan in Fall 2026.\n\n \n\nMichelle Hinojosa works at the inter
section of painting\, poetry\, and fiber art\, where she considers memory\
, intergenerational trauma\, and migration. Born in central Texas\, by way
of the fields of California and Northern Mexico\, Michelle uplifts tradit
ions of making that have provided much-needed stability to a family displa
ced. Michelle Hinojosa is an Assistant Professor of Art at Pennsylvania St
ate University.\n\n \n\nBarbara Pearsall is an artist and educator based i
n Michigan. Her art practice is attentive to how deviation from material c
onventions can subvert or metamorphose the role of institutions\, where he
r philosophical and political concerns manifest through material explorati
ons of the built environment. Her pieces seek to create illusory and unusu
al architectural conditions as a form of resistance\, interrupting real-wo
rld functionality to allow for alternative systems of order. She is an Ass
istant Professor of Foundations & Sculpture at Michigan State University.\

DESCRIPTION:The Before We Knew Better art exhibition brings together the w
ork of Lamar Whidbee and Chris Facey to reflect on joy\, memory and the ex
periences that shape us early in life. The exhibition looks to childhood a
s a place of imagination\, play and connection. Rather than seeing nostalg
ia as a way to escape the present\, the exhibition considers how memories
of joy can remind us of what still matters. Whidbee and Facey ask what we
carry with us from those early years and how those experiences continue to
influence our well-being\, relationships and sense of self. At a time whe
n conversations around mental health are increasingly important\, the exhi
bition offers space to pause\, reflect and reconnect with the moments that
first taught us about joy. \n\nThe exhibition will be available for viewi
ng in the art gallery at the African American Cultural Center on weekdays
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Aug. 17 and Sept. 25. Whidbee and Facey wil
l discuss the exhibition during an artist talk event that will be held in

DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker\nBio\nDr. Konstantinos “Kostas” Vogiatzi
s completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Athe
ns\, Greece\, in 2006. In 2008\, he obtained his MSc in Applied Molecular
Spectroscopy from the University of Crete\, Greece\, and he received his P
h.D. in 2012 from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology\, Germany. After a
n eight-month post-doctoral appointment at the Institute of Nanotechnology
at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology\, he moved in 2014 at the Univer
sity of Minnesota\, where he performed post-doctoral research at the group
of Prof. Laura Gagliardi. In 2016\, Dr. Vogiatzis joined the University o
f Tennessee\, Knoxville\, as an Assistant Professor of theoretical and com
putational chemistry and in 2021 he was early tenured and promoted to Asso
ciate Professor. Since 2018\, he has also been faculty of the Bredesen Cen
ter of the University of Tennessee. \nResearch\nOur research focuses on th
e development of computational methods based on electronic structure theor
y and artificial intelligence for describing chemical systems relevant to
clean\, green technologies. We are particularly interested in new methods
that help us explore the atomistic effects that contribute to the separati
on of CO2 from other gases. We are also exploring novel molecular and mat
erial catalysts for the synthesis of alternative fuels. Our overall object
ives are to elucidate the fundamental physical principles underlying the s
orption and catalytic properties of molecules and materials\, as well as t
o assist in the interpretation of experimental data.
