DESCRIPTION:Securing funding is one of the most consequential — and leas
t openly discussed — dimensions of a research career. For scholars whose
work centers social inequality and structurally marginalized communities\
, pursuing funding carries unique political and institutional complexities
. This workshop engages those realities directly. Participants will examin
e how funding priorities are shaped\, how research agendas can be both adv
anced and constrained by funders\, and how to build a diversified\, sustai
nable funding strategy across sectors — without losing sight of their sc
holarly mission or community commitments.\n\nIn this workshop\, Dr. Rashaw
n Ray\, whose funding portfolio spans federal agencies\, private foundatio
ns\, and philanthropic institutions\, will demystify the landscape of publ
ic and private research support. Through a combination of presentations\,
 case discussions\, and small-group work\, participants will leave with:\n\
nA working knowledge of the public funding landscape. An understanding of
how federal agencies like the National Science Foundation fund social scie
nce research\, including how to identify the right programs\, align resear
ch questions with agency priorities\, and navigate the review process.Fami
liarity with private and philanthropic funding. Insight into how foundatio
ns such as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Russell Sage Foundation
operate\, what differentiates their funding logic from federal agencies\,
and how to position applied scholarship for philanthropic support.Awarenes
s of the structural dynamics of funding. A candid examination of how fundi
ng opportunities are not equally distributed and strategies for navigating
and challenging those inequities.A personalized funding roadmap. A draft
funding strategy tailored to each participant’s research agenda\, career
stage\, and institutional context\, with identified targets across both p
ublic and private sectors.Registration and fee (refundable for UNCCH stude
nts) are required for Zoom link access.

DESCRIPTION:The Before We Knew Better art exhibition brings together the w
ork of Lamar Whidbee and Chris Facey to reflect on joy\, memory and the ex
periences that shape us early in life. The exhibition looks to childhood a
s a place of imagination\, play and connection. Rather than seeing nostalg
ia as a way to escape the present\, the exhibition considers how memories
of joy can remind us of what still matters. Whidbee and Facey ask what we
carry with us from those early years and how those experiences continue to
influence our well-being\, relationships and sense of self. At a time whe
n conversations around mental health are increasingly important\, the exhi
bition offers space to pause\, reflect and reconnect with the moments that
first taught us about joy. \n\nThe exhibition will be available for viewi

from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Aug. 17 and Sept. 25. Whidbee and Facey wil

DESCRIPTION:The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts presents “Patter Recognitio
n\,” mixed metal jewelry by Nell Chandler\, acrylic collage landscapes b
y Adrienne Knowles and handmade functional pottery by Evelyn Ward in the g
allery from Aug. 25-Sept. 20. An opening reception will be held during Hil
lsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk on Aug. 28 from 6-9 p.m. During the art
walk Cameron Mincey will play country and rock music on the front patio.
The show includes an artist talk by Nell Chandler\, Adrienne Knowles and E
velyn Ward in the gallery on Saturday\, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. \nThe commissio
n for a ring inspired a new line of work for jeweler Nell Chandler. The cu
stomer wanted a band with brass foliage all around it. Though Chandler oft
en depicts foliage on her jewelry\, usually she paints the image on the me
tal and sets it in clear resin. The intricacy of setting brass on brass wa
s a new experience. “I was a little surprised at how meditative sawing\,
filing and sanding brass foliage can be\, and by the unexpected patinas I
  achieved on the band\,” Nell says. \nChandler’s niece\, Emily\, is a
stained glass artist who loves wearing her aunt’s creations. Emily fashi
oned little glass “gems” for Chandler. “I could feel my eyes sparkli
ng when I opened the box and started looking through them and pairing them
up. I spent the whole weekend making bezels and sketching designs for the
m in my sketchbook\,” Nell says. \nAlthough painter and printmaker Adrie
nne Knowles doesn’t approach paintings with patterns in mind\, they ofte
n appear in the choices she makes – the warm colors\, the tendency to pl
ace something recognizable in an abstract\, favorite techniques\, tools an
d materials. Most of her paintings are acrylic\, mixed media and collage\,
though she also works in oil and cold wax medium. Some of the paintings i
n this show are monotypes\, one-of-a-kind layered acrylic prints on paper
made using a gel printing plate. “I love for viewers to feel a little su
rprise when they observe a painting from a distance\, then move closer to
find patterns and randomness\, the energy or stillness\, the familiar or j
ust the vague reminder of something they can’t quite remember\,” Adrie
nne says. \nPotter Evelyn Ward tells her students\, “when you can’t th
ink of how to decorate a pot\, go with stripes. I say it a little jokingly
\, but I don’t think it’s bad advice.” Ward has always been drawn to
pots with patterns. Their predictable repetition and rhythm give a sense
of order. \n“I’ve been employing a lot of patterns because they work s
o well with monoprinting\, which I use on all of my work\,” Evelyn says.
Monoprinting is a transfer method in which colored slip is painted onto c
ut pieces of paper\, which are applied to a leather-hard piece of pottery
after the slip has dried a little. When the paper is pulled off\, the slip
stays transferred to the surface of the pot. This printing technique give
s the pieces a distinctive look and texture\, and lends itself very well t
o patterns. \nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned by 21 local artist

rned wood\, handcrafted furniture\, pottery\, scratchboard and mixed media

DESCRIPTION:Ring Therapeutics vectors: a new class of modular targeted med
 icine\nSpeaker:\nAlessandra Mancini\, PhD\, Senior Scientist in Upstream P
rocess Development at Ring Therapeutics \nAbstract:\nAnelloviruses (ANVs)
and Bromoviruses (BMVs) belong to the Anelloviridae and to the Bromovirida
e families of viruses\, respectively. ANVs are small\, single-stranded cir
cular DNA viruses\, characterized by a non-enveloped capsid that have coev
olved with humans for millennia. BMVs are plant RNA viruses that are regul
arly ingested as part of a human diet and are found in a host of human tis
sues beyond the digestive tract. \nANVs and BMVs are both characterized by
one single capsid protein that assemble to form capsids. We have leverage
d the single protein structure to develop virus-like particles VLPs) as th
erapeutic delivery vehicles\, including vector-drug and vector-oligo conju
gates. Our VectorBricks™ viral vector platform employs a standard recomb
inant capsid protein expression step\, allowing for the purification of ca
psid building blocks. These blocks are then used for in vitro assembly to
encapsulate payloads in the capsid lumen. Here I report an overview of the
AnelloVector® manufacturing process\, focusing on two case studies that
improved the productivity of the upstream process and the scale-up of our
recombinant capsid protein production process to 50 L scale. These improve
ments and the scalability of the capsid production process demonstrate the
potential of the VectorBricks™ platform to industrialize manufacturing
of therapeutics for targeted medicines. \nBiography:\nAlessandra Mancini\,
PhD is a Senior Scientist in Upstream Process Development at Ring Therape
 utics\, a pre-clinical Flagship Pioneering funded company. In her role\, s
he develops upstream manufacturing strategies for a new class of targeted
medicines – Ring Therapeutics’ novel vector conjugates. \nPreviously s
he worked in the Viral Vector Upstream Process Development team at 2sevent
y bio where she advanced gene and cell therapies from early to late-stage
development. \nAlessandra holds a MSc in Biomedical Science from Universit
y of Florence\, Italy\, a PhD in Endocrinology from Queen Mary University
of London\, UK and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neuroendocrinology from Br
igham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. \nRegister on Eve

DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker\nBio\nAmanda Patrick obtained her bachelor
’s degree in chemistry with a minor in anthropology from North Carolina
State University (2011) and then earned her PhD in Analytical Chemistry un
der the supervision of Prof. Nick Polfer from the University of Florida (2
016). She then completed a two-year postdoctoral training under the Nation
al Research Council Research Associateship Program at the Air Force Resear
ch Laboratory\, Space Vehicles Directorate at Kirtland AFB. In 2018\, she
began her independent career at Mississippi State University in the Depart
ment of Chemistry\, where she currently holds the rank of Associate Profes
sor.  \nAbout the Seminar\nTitle\nExplorations at the Intersection of Ion
ic Liquids and Mass Spectrometry. \nAbstract\nIonic liquids are salts with
low melting points and wide liquid ranges\, which are attractive for uses
across many different application areas. Whereas they were once considere
d remarkably thermally stable\, it has become clear that structure and con
ditions affect stability and degradation. Furthermore\, the stability\, wa
ter solubility\, increasing use\, and diverse properties based on their di
verse structures has led to recent increases in concerns about ionic liqui
d species as emerging contaminants. From applications to decomposition pro
ducts to detection from various media\, mass spectrometry is well poised t
o provide useful insights into this class of compounds. In this talk\, I w
ill overview the scholarship of the Patrick Group at Mississippi State Uni
versity and focus on my contributions at the intersection of ionic liquids
and mass spectrometry. This will cover the study of electrospray-generate
d clusters relevant to electrospray spacecraft propulsion modeling\, gas-p
hase dissociation patterns and other analytical method development studies
\, and thermal decomposition studies by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass
 spectrometry.

DESCRIPTION:The Pittsboro Gallery of Arts presents the work of guest artis
t Shannon Bueker in a Featured Artist Show on display Tuesday\, Sept. 8\,
through Sunday\, Oct. 4. A reception will be held Friday\, Sept. 18\, from
5-8 p.m. \nBueker has been an integral part of the arts community in Chat
ham County for decades. She is a founding member of the organization that
became the Chatham Artists Guild\, serving as president multiple times and
consistently supporting the work of fellow artists while building her own
artistic career. She is among those who helped make Chatham County a have
n for artists and a destination for art lovers. \nBueker’s acrylic and w
atercolor paintings are easily identifiable as her own. Her color choices
and remarkable brushwork capture the energy of her subjects while maintain
ing artistic balance. The exhibition\, Wild Things\, features some of Buek
 er’s favorite subjects\, including a goddess figure carrying a bear in a
bag around her waist\, wild horses prancing\, deer grazing\, rabbits\, do
gs\, snakes and many more creatures that seem to cavort off the canvases.
\nBueker’s drawings and paintings have long been motivated by her respon
se to the beauty she sees around her. The grace of trees and plants\, the
fluidity of animals and the vivid colors of the earth inspire her to paint
and draw. She sees her work as an attempt to reveal nature’s grace by u
nfolding its layers of interconnection and surprising overlaps. \nBueker w
rites\, “This life we have is a gift. It is a wonder to me that it comes
in so many shapes\, sizes\, and forms.” \nThe Pittsboro Gallery of Arts
invites visitors to celebrate the gifts of Shannon Bueker and her work.
