 \nAugust 20-October 15\, 2026\n\nReception: August 20\, 5-7 pm\n\n \n\nDra
wn together in graduate school by their mutual love of experimentation and
play\, Michelle Inez Hinojosa and Barbara Pearsall have built a collabora
tive practice around analogue animation and vibrant abstraction. Together\
, their work explores optical toys\, immersive installations\, and movemen
 t. Under the Tent: Whirling & Flickering features kaleidoscopic imagery\,
 flickering abstractions\, projection mapping\, a hidden trapdoor\, and han
d-cranked wheels that transform what viewers see. After searching for the
perfect venue\, they are thrilled to bring their collaborative installatio
n to UNC. Their first public artwork\, Turnabout Folly\, will debut in Lan
sing\, Michigan in Fall 2026.\n\n \n\nMichelle Hinojosa works at the inter
section of painting\, poetry\, and fiber art\, where she considers memory\
, intergenerational trauma\, and migration. Born in central Texas\, by way
of the fields of California and Northern Mexico\, Michelle uplifts tradit
ions of making that have provided much-needed stability to a family displa
ced. Michelle Hinojosa is an Assistant Professor of Art at Pennsylvania St
ate University.\n\n \n\nBarbara Pearsall is an artist and educator based i
n Michigan. Her art practice is attentive to how deviation from material c
onventions can subvert or metamorphose the role of institutions\, where he
r philosophical and political concerns manifest through material explorati
ons of the built environment. Her pieces seek to create illusory and unusu

DESCRIPTION:The Before We Knew Better art exhibition brings together the w
ork of Lamar Whidbee and Chris Facey to reflect on joy\, memory and the ex
periences that shape us early in life. The exhibition looks to childhood a
s a place of imagination\, play and connection. Rather than seeing nostalg
ia as a way to escape the present\, the exhibition considers how memories
of joy can remind us of what still matters. Whidbee and Facey ask what we
carry with us from those early years and how those experiences continue to
influence our well-being\, relationships and sense of self. At a time whe
n conversations around mental health are increasingly important\, the exhi
bition offers space to pause\, reflect and reconnect with the moments that
first taught us about joy. \n\nThe exhibition will be available for viewi
ng in the art gallery at the African American Cultural Center on weekdays
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Aug. 17 and Sept. 25. Whidbee and Facey wil

DESCRIPTION:This course explores the potential applications of generative
AI (gen AI) for survey research. Designed for survey practitioners\, data
scientists\, and social scientists\, it provides an introduction to Gen AI
  – especially large language models (LLMs) – and delves into their app
lications across the survey lifecycle. Participants will gain foundational
knowledge of how AI technologies like LLMs work\, understand its implicat
ions for survey data quality (in relation to frameworks such as Total Surv
ey Error)\, and learn practical strategies for integrating GenAI into surv
ey design\, data collection\, and analysis. Rather than focusing on the te
chnical aspects of LLMs\, this course will focus on applied AI research\,
drawing on empirical evidence of how LLMs perform in areas such as convers
ational interviewing and synthetic response generation. We will pay partic
ular attention to model evaluation\, responsible management of risks\, use
r experience design (UXD)\, and the augmentation (not replacement) of huma
n expertise.\n\nRegistration and fee are required for Zoom link access.\n\

ts struggle. But women are especially pushed to give up their creative amb
itions\, from societal disapproval against “selfishness” to the pressu
re (or desire) for children and economic stability. After spending much of
her twenties and thirties wondering if prioritizing her writing over ever

Griest turned to other women for their perspectives on that haunting quest

 rviews legendary painters\, poets\, actors\, dancers\, and musicians who t
alk intimately about their art\, both what it gifts them and what it costs
them. Join us for a multi-media presentation and discussion about the rea

 \n \n Ancient Nubia \n\n \n Ancient Nubia has a

torical and political connections to pharaonic Egypt.\nVisitors can learn
about this other powerful kingdom on the Nile from an archaeological persp

DESCRIPTION:Join the Geospatial Forum for a hands-on studio entitled "Acce
lerate Your Research with the Zooniverse: Quickly and Accurately Analyze I
nformation with a Crowd." Caren Cooper\, an NC State professor of public s
cience and co-director of the Citizen Science Campus\, will help participa
nts distinguish between research questions that can be advanced through co
nventional methods and those that can be advanced with Zooniverse\, and th
en walk attendees through the process of building a project on the Zoonive
rse platform. Cooper will cover how to upload data\, create volunteer work
flows\, set rules for consensus levels\, and feed results from one workflo
w into more refined workflows. She will also discuss NC State's Citizen Sc
ience Campus and opportunities to pilot test new projects through a Projec
t Incubator. \n\nDo you acquire more data than you're equipped to analyze?
Could you build better AI models if you had more human annotations? Can y
ou imagine new research questions to answer if you had hundreds or thousan
ds of people helping annotate data? A major challenge with using sensors a
nd remote technologies to acquire data is dealing with the flood of inform
ation. With aerial imagery and camera trap photos\, researchers often face
a bottleneck in processing data rather than in acquiring it. Computers an
d AI can help\, but a core need that remains is the human ability of patte
rn recognition. The Zooniverse platform enables researchers to accomplish
what would otherwise not be possible or practical.\n\nNote: Participants a
re encouraged to bring a laptop to walk through a project on the Zoonivers
e platform. \n\nYou can attend Cooper's studio in person at 5103 Jordan Ha

DESCRIPTION:Join the Department of Media Arts\, Design & Technology and De

be found here: 2026-2027 Lecture Series.\n\nTania Allen\, department head
of media arts\, design & technology and design studies\, NC State Universi
ty \n\nTania Allen’s research and scholarship focuses on critical cartog
raphy and critical mapping as tools for design research. Building on theor
ies drawing from anthropology\, action research\, placemaking\, and partic
ipatory design her works seeks to “thicken” the way that data is visua
lized and the stories and experiences that are at the core of data collect
ion\, cleaning\, manipulation and communication. At the core of her approa
ch to critical cartography is the reciprocal activity of encoding and deco
ding\, bridging the etic perspective of the researcher (i.e. designer) and
the emic perspective of the subject of study (i.e. the user) by using dat
a to uncover and communicate a truth (encoding)\, while simultaneously eva
luating the meaning of this truth (decoding).\n\nTania is the co-director
of the design research group co-lab\, which focuses on critical mapping as
a participatory design research tool. Currently\, co-lab’s focus is on
developing a methodology for critical mapping that simultaneously embraces
cartography as a powerful analytic and synthetic research tool\, while al
so challenging the assumptions that the mapping and visualization process
 embeds within it.

 \n \n Ancient Nubia \n\n \n Ancient Nubia has a
long and glorious past\, but it is frequently eclipsed in the public imag
ination by its northern neighbor\, Egypt. Ancient Nubia: Excavating Treasu
res of the Nile\, from the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, brings into the
limelight the Kingdom of Kush\, an important civilization in the Middle Ni
le Valley\, introducing visitors to its powerful kings and royal women and
the materials excavated from their tombs and pyramids during the Harvard
University – Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition more than 100 years a
go.\nStunning displays highlight the longevity of this almost forgotten ki
ngdom through its three main historical periods spanning almost 3\,000 yea
rs\, speaking to its cultural continuity and adaptation as well as its his
torical and political connections to pharaonic Egypt.\nVisitors can learn
about this other powerful kingdom on the Nile from an archaeological persp
ective with hands-on and digital interactives. A special display highlight
s a connection to the NCMA’s very own Nubiologist and features recently
donated Egyptian objects as comparatives to the Nubian ones in the exhibit
 ion. \n \n \n \n \n \n Thr
