DESCRIPTION:This one-day course will be offered via Zoom only. Attendance
is required as it will not be recorded.\n\nThis interactive\, hands-on wor
kshop will introduce participants to a framework for considering the conse
quences of using generative AI in qualitative research designs and workflo
 ws (Paulus\, 2023\; Paulus & Lester\, 2024). We will start by acknowledgin
g inherent risks and ethical dilemmas posed by the development of large la
nguage models and how generative AI is challenging the essence of what it
 means to do qualitative work (Paulus & Marone\, 2025\; Paulus\, Lester & D
avis\, 2025). We will learn how to distinguish between methodological stra
tegies and technological tactics\, i.e. why researchers must first know ho
w they want to work with their data before choosing the best tools to do s
o (Woolf & Silver\, 2018). We will then discuss the current ‘state of pl
ay’ regarding the various genres of AI-assist technologies available to
qualitative researchers and how to select the most appropriate platform. W
e will then compare and contrast several AI-assist platforms for managing
and analyzing qualitative data. Finally\, we will discuss best practices f
or how to report the use of AI in research studies (Lester & Paulus\, fort
hcoming) and how to reflexively consider the consequences of doing so. Sam
ple interview data will be used for the practice exercises. Workshop time
will alternative between short lectures and demonstrations\, small group d
iscussions\, practical hands-on activities\, and application of principles
learned to the participants’ own research studies and data.\n\nRegistra
tion and fee are required for Zoom link access.

DESCRIPTION:What do a Civil War-era plantation owner and a modern “girl
boss” have in common? More than you think. \nAdelicia Acklen and Dorothy
Thomas were two of the most powerful plantation-owning women—one in the
US South and the other in South America—but both wielded the power of o
wnership by deploying and playing on particular ideas of femininity. This
talk hosted by Carolina Public Humanities traces their unsettling legacy i
nto the present\, asking what happens when women gain power within systems
built on inequality. \nFree\, but space is limited\; registration is requ
ired via the Carolina Public Humanities event webpage. \nAbout the speaker
: \nTanya Shields is an Associate Professor of Women’s and Gender Studie
s whose research focuses on Caribbean studies and plantation logics. She t
eaches courses on the Caribbean\, the arts of activism\, growing up girls
globally\, and the continuing influence of plantation economics and politi
