DESCRIPTION:The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts presents “Patter Recognitio
n\,” mixed metal jewelry by Nell Chandler\, acrylic collage landscapes b
y Adrienne Knowles and handmade functional pottery by Evelyn Ward in the g
allery from Aug. 25-Sept. 20. An opening reception will be held during Hil
lsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk on Aug. 28 from 6-9 p.m. During the art
walk Cameron Mincey will play country and rock music on the front patio.
The show includes an artist talk by Nell Chandler\, Adrienne Knowles and E
velyn Ward in the gallery on Saturday\, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. \nThe commissio
n for a ring inspired a new line of work for jeweler Nell Chandler. The cu
stomer wanted a band with brass foliage all around it. Though Chandler oft
en depicts foliage on her jewelry\, usually she paints the image on the me
tal and sets it in clear resin. The intricacy of setting brass on brass wa
s a new experience. “I was a little surprised at how meditative sawing\,
filing and sanding brass foliage can be\, and by the unexpected patinas I
  achieved on the band\,” Nell says. \nChandler’s niece\, Emily\, is a
stained glass artist who loves wearing her aunt’s creations. Emily fashi
oned little glass “gems” for Chandler. “I could feel my eyes sparkli
ng when I opened the box and started looking through them and pairing them
up. I spent the whole weekend making bezels and sketching designs for the
m in my sketchbook\,” Nell says. \nAlthough painter and printmaker Adrie
nne Knowles doesn’t approach paintings with patterns in mind\, they ofte
n appear in the choices she makes – the warm colors\, the tendency to pl
ace something recognizable in an abstract\, favorite techniques\, tools an
d materials. Most of her paintings are acrylic\, mixed media and collage\,
though she also works in oil and cold wax medium. Some of the paintings i
n this show are monotypes\, one-of-a-kind layered acrylic prints on paper
made using a gel printing plate. “I love for viewers to feel a little su
rprise when they observe a painting from a distance\, then move closer to
find patterns and randomness\, the energy or stillness\, the familiar or j
ust the vague reminder of something they can’t quite remember\,” Adrie
nne says. \nPotter Evelyn Ward tells her students\, “when you can’t th
ink of how to decorate a pot\, go with stripes. I say it a little jokingly
\, but I don’t think it’s bad advice.” Ward has always been drawn to
pots with patterns. Their predictable repetition and rhythm give a sense
of order. \n“I’ve been employing a lot of patterns because they work s
o well with monoprinting\, which I use on all of my work\,” Evelyn says.
Monoprinting is a transfer method in which colored slip is painted onto c
ut pieces of paper\, which are applied to a leather-hard piece of pottery
after the slip has dried a little. When the paper is pulled off\, the slip
stays transferred to the surface of the pot. This printing technique give
s the pieces a distinctive look and texture\, and lends itself very well t
o patterns. \nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned by 21 local artist
 s featuring painting\, sculpture\, photography\, glass arts\, jewelry\, tu
rned wood\, handcrafted furniture\, pottery\, scratchboard and mixed media
. Visit the gallery’s website for more information about the show.

DESCRIPTION:“Twinkle\, Twinkle\, Little Star” is an interactive childr
en’s theatre piece for very young audiences\, performed by two Star Keep
ers named Glimmer and Sparkle. \nIt’s time for the night sky to fill wit
h stars\, but one important star – Little Star\, the wishing star – is
missing because Sparkle rushed through putting the stars away the previou
s morning and muddled everything up. \nWhat follows is a search-and-rescue
adventure as the two star keepers (and the audience) hunt for Little Star
\, discovering along the way that all the other stars have been put in the
wrong places too and need to be moved to their proper place. Audience mem
bers help the Star Keepers find and re-organize the sky just in time for n
ightfall so that everyone can make a wish on their favorite star. \nTwinkl
e\, Twinkle explores the ideas that mistakes happen\, feelings are valid\,
and no one has to face hard things alone – all wrapped up in a genuinel
y joyful romp about stars. \nBy Ernie Nolan \nProduced by special arrangem
ent with Plays for New Audiences \nDialogue complexity: conversations are
short but use more vocabulary than some other shows\; performers also use
physical actions\, props\, music\, and songs to tell the story. \nWhat is
Theatre for the Very Young? \nTheatre for the Very Young (TVY) is theatre
designed for ages zero through five to support their cognitive development
. The purpose of TVY is to support our youngest audience members in engagi
ng with creative play\, introducing them to narrative storytelling\, and e
xploring social and emotional learning in a fun and approachable way. TVY
is designed to be sensory-friendly and an open space for movement\, vocali
zation and exploration! \nAudiences are invited to arrive 30 minutes prior
to each showtime (when the “house” opens) to participate in a free pr
 e-show activity\, coordinated by RLT’s education department.
