DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker\nBio\nI was born and raised in Taiwan. After
  receiving my B.S. in Chemistry from National Taiwan University\, I moved 
 across the Pacific Ocean for graduate studies at the Scripps Research Inst
 itute with Professor M. Reza Ghadiri\, where I worked on developing new DN
 A sequencing technologies and demonstrated that DNA movement at the single
  molecule level can be spatially and temporally resolved as it threads thr
 ough a-hemolysin (a protein nanopore). Upon receiving my Ph.D. degree\, I 
 moved to Yale University (2011) to work with Alanna Schepartz and built th
 e first beta-peptide bundle that binds sugars/polyols. My next stop was Ro
 ckefeller University (2014)\, where I developed Syn-BNP (synthetic-bioinfo
 rmatic natural product)\, a culture-independent pipeline for the discovery
  of bioactive small molecules. \n  \nIn the summer of 2019\, I joined my 
 alma mater\, the Department of Chemistry at National Taiwan University\, a
 s an assistant professor to start my independent research career. In light
  of the fact that microorganisms use natural products to communicate with 
 each other and interact with the environment\, I see the study of natural 
 products as a way to understand the chemical language used by microorganis
 ms\, the most abundant form of life on earth. Currently\, my research enta
 ils three aspects on natural products: discovery\, chemical synthesis\, an
 d enzymes responsible for their production.

 s completed his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the University of Athe
 ns\, Greece\, in 2006. In 2008\, he obtained his MSc in Applied Molecular 
 Spectroscopy from the University of Crete\, Greece\, and he received his P
 h.D. in 2012 from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology\, Germany. After a
 n eight-month post-doctoral appointment at the Institute of Nanotechnology
  at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology\, he moved in 2014 at the Univer
 sity of Minnesota\, where he performed post-doctoral research at the group
  of Prof. Laura Gagliardi. In 2016\, Dr. Vogiatzis joined the University o
 f Tennessee\, Knoxville\, as an Assistant Professor of theoretical and com
 putational chemistry and in 2021 he was early tenured and promoted to Asso
 ciate Professor. Since 2018\, he has also been faculty of the Bredesen Cen
 ter of the University of Tennessee. \nResearch\nOur research focuses on th
 e development of computational methods based on electronic structure theor
 y and artificial intelligence for describing chemical systems relevant to 
 clean\, green technologies. We are particularly interested in new methods 
 that help us explore the atomistic effects that contribute to the separati
 on of CO2 from other gases. We are also exploring novel molecular and mat
 erial catalysts for the synthesis of alternative fuels. Our overall object
 ives are to elucidate the fundamental physical principles underlying the s
 orption and catalytic properties of molecules and materials\, as well as t
 o assist in the interpretation of experimental data.

DESCRIPTION:Research\nThe MesoScience Lab develops new computational tools
  to study excited‐state processes in molecular materials on the nanomete
 r‐to‐micron length scale.  We work in two broad spaces \n\nStochastic
  Quantum Dynamics: We implement formally exact\, size‐invariant (O(1) sc
 aling) algorithms—such as adaptive Hierarchy of Pure States (adHOPS)—t
 o simulate exciton transport and non‐Markovian effects in molecular semi
 conductors.  By correlating these simulations with state‐of‐the‐art
  spectroscopic measurements\, we reveal how electronic couplings and vibra
 tional motion govern exciton delocalization and migration over hundreds of
  nanometers.\nBioenergetics & Photosynthetic Modeling: We build multiscale
 \, integrative models of photosystem II and related light‐harvesting ass
 emblies to dissect regulatory mechanisms in natural photosynthesis.  By i
 ncorporating structural biology\, spectroscopy\, and biochemical data\, we
  identify design principles for rewiring photosynthetic networks—aiming 
 to develop physical principles for enhancing crop yields or algal biofacto
 ry production.

DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker\nBio\nYasunori Okamoto was born in Japan in 
 1986. He studied chemistry at Osaka University and obtained his bachelor (
 2009)\, master (2011)\, and PhD degrees (2014). He joined the group of Pro
 f. T. Hayashi\, an expert on hemoprotein engineering\, but started up func
 tional analysis and alteration of “non”-heme diiron protein from 2009 
 to 2014. Throughout his project\, he actively participated in many collabo
 rations to learn various techniques from experts\, including the groups of
  Prof. Y. Shiro (Riken\, Japan) for protein X-ray crystallography\, Prof. 
 S. Hirota (NAIST\, Japan)\, Prof. K. Ishimori (Hokkaido Univ.\, Japan) for
  resonance Raman spectroscopy\, and Prof. Y. Takano (Osaka Univ.\, Japan) 
 for DFT calculation. He also joined the group of Prof. D. M. Kurtz Jr (Uni
 v. Texas San Antonio\, US)\, a well-known chemist of diiron proteins\, as 
 a visiting researcher in 2011. His project on the iron protein piqued his 
 interest in the molecular mechanism of metal acquisition/homeostasis in li
 ving systems\; thus\, he also worked with Prof. S. Aono (IMS\, Japan)\, an
  expert on metalloproteins regulating metal homeostasis\, during and after

 tilizing theoretical and computational methods to study various scientific
  questions. The research topics that we are interested in include plasmoni
 c materials such as noble metal nanoparticles\, complex structure material
 s such as supramolecular assembles and MOFs\, molecular ensembles such as 
 SAMs and polymers\, chemical mixtures such as electrolytes\, etc. Various 
 theoretical tools would be utilized to investigate the properties of these
  materials and systems\, as well as the interactions between these systems
  and single molecules and particles. New theory and methods would be devel
 oped to gain new physical insights into related chemical and physical proc
 esses\, such as light-matter interactions\, electron and energy transfer\,
  and catalytic reactions. We hope to apply this knowledge to improve and/o
 r invent applications in the fields of alternative energy\, catalysis\, an
 d sensing.

DESCRIPTION:Bio\nIoannis (Yannis) holds a BSc. degree in Chemistry and a M
 Sc. degree in Environmental Chemistry and Technology from the National and
  Kapodistrian University of Athens\, the latter under the supervision of P
 rof. Michael Scoullos. In 2015 he acquired his PhD. degree in Materials Ch
 emistry from the University of Crete\, under the supervision of Prof. Pant
 elis N. Trikalitis working on the development of Metal Organic Frameworks 
 for gas storage and separation applications. After one year as a Post-Doct
 oral Fellow developing water-stable MOFs\, in 2016\, he joined the researc
 h group of Prof. Mercouri G. Kanatzidis at Northwestern University for a s
 econd Post-Doctoral appointment. His work at NU focused on the design and 
 synthesis of environmentally friendly and stable perovskite and metal hali
 de materials for optoelectronic applications. He developed the new family 
 of 3D “hollow” perovskites (US Patent 16/623\,873)\, as well as variou
 s water-stable metal halide materials. In 2021\, he started his independen
 t career as an Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida. He 
 received the 2020 IIN Outstanding Researcher award from the International 
 Institute for Nanotechnology\, the 2022 ACS PRF Doctoral New Investigator 
 Research award\, the 2024 DOE Early Career Research Program (ECRP) Award\
 , he is Fellow of the International Association of Advanced Materials (IA
 AM) and he holds a teaching certificate (2020-2021) from the SEARLE center
  at Northwestern University.
