and energy. Her work has been recognized by the National Watercolor Socie

 \nAugust 20-October 15\, 2026\n\nReception: August 20\, 5-7 pm\n\n \n\nDra
wn together in graduate school by their mutual love of experimentation and
play\, Michelle Inez Hinojosa and Barbara Pearsall have built a collabora
tive practice around analogue animation and vibrant abstraction. Together\
, their work explores optical toys\, immersive installations\, and movemen
 t. Under the Tent: Whirling & Flickering features kaleidoscopic imagery\,
 flickering abstractions\, projection mapping\, a hidden trapdoor\, and han
d-cranked wheels that transform what viewers see. After searching for the
perfect venue\, they are thrilled to bring their collaborative installatio
n to UNC. Their first public artwork\, Turnabout Folly\, will debut in Lan
sing\, Michigan in Fall 2026.\n\n \n\nMichelle Hinojosa works at the inter
section of painting\, poetry\, and fiber art\, where she considers memory\
, intergenerational trauma\, and migration. Born in central Texas\, by way
of the fields of California and Northern Mexico\, Michelle uplifts tradit
ions of making that have provided much-needed stability to a family displa
ced. Michelle Hinojosa is an Assistant Professor of Art at Pennsylvania St
ate University.\n\n \n\nBarbara Pearsall is an artist and educator based i
n Michigan. Her art practice is attentive to how deviation from material c
onventions can subvert or metamorphose the role of institutions\, where he
r philosophical and political concerns manifest through material explorati
ons of the built environment. Her pieces seek to create illusory and unusu
al architectural conditions as a form of resistance\, interrupting real-wo
rld functionality to allow for alternative systems of order. She is an Ass

DESCRIPTION:The Before We Knew Better art exhibition brings together the w
ork of Lamar Whidbee and Chris Facey to reflect on joy\, memory and the ex
periences that shape us early in life. The exhibition looks to childhood a
s a place of imagination\, play and connection. Rather than seeing nostalg
ia as a way to escape the present\, the exhibition considers how memories
of joy can remind us of what still matters. Whidbee and Facey ask what we
carry with us from those early years and how those experiences continue to
influence our well-being\, relationships and sense of self. At a time whe
n conversations around mental health are increasingly important\, the exhi
bition offers space to pause\, reflect and reconnect with the moments that
first taught us about joy. \n\nThe exhibition will be available for viewi
ng in the art gallery at the African American Cultural Center on weekdays
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Aug. 17 and Sept. 25. Whidbee and Facey wil
l discuss the exhibition during an artist talk event that will be held in
 the center's art gallery at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 2.

DESCRIPTION:About the Speaker\nBio\nI was born and raised in Taiwan. After
receiving my B.S. in Chemistry from National Taiwan University\, I moved
across the Pacific Ocean for graduate studies at the Scripps Research Inst
itute with Professor M. Reza Ghadiri\, where I worked on developing new DN
A sequencing technologies and demonstrated that DNA movement at the single
molecule level can be spatially and temporally resolved as it threads thr
 ough a-hemolysin (a protein nanopore). Upon receiving my Ph.D. degree\, I
moved to Yale University (2011) to work with Alanna Schepartz and built th
e first beta-peptide bundle that binds sugars/polyols. My next stop was Ro
 ckefeller University (2014)\, where I developed Syn-BNP (synthetic-bioinfo
rmatic natural product)\, a culture-independent pipeline for the discovery
of bioactive small molecules. \n  \nIn the summer of 2019\, I joined my
alma mater\, the Department of Chemistry at National Taiwan University\, a
s an assistant professor to start my independent research career. In light
of the fact that microorganisms use natural products to communicate with
each other and interact with the environment\, I see the study of natural
products as a way to understand the chemical language used by microorganis
ms\, the most abundant form of life on earth. Currently\, my research enta
ils three aspects on natural products: discovery\, chemical synthesis\, an
d enzymes responsible for their production.

DESCRIPTION:With election season in full swing\, we will gather at the cor
ner of Wade Avenue and Dixie Trail every Monday to ring bells for peace.
\nDo Justice has registered to join the NC Council of Churches and faith
communities across NC to ring bells for peace at 6 PM every Monday\, Sept
ember 7 to November 2.  We ring\, wave\, and hold signs from 6:00-6:15PM
 (yes\, only 15 minutes). \nThis is a family-friendly event.  Families ma
y choose to stand on the grass above the sidewalk if they prefer to keep t
heir children farther from traffic.  Some of our bells are loud so bring
ear defenders or plugs if big sounds bother you. \nDo Justice\, you and I
will meet at Wade and Dixie Trail in front of our church and ring any bell
s you bring for 15 minutes while we smile\, bring and show “A Peals for
Peace” signs\, and wave to passing traffic.  Bells\, tambourines\, tria
ngles\, cymbals – any happily jingling or clanging instrument is welcome
.  If you don’t have a bell\, bring an “A Peals for Peace” sign to
 hold. \nThe message is a simple\, non-confrontational\, faith-rooted act o
f shared witness: \n\nEvery person is created with inherent worth\nWe are
called to love our neighbor\nPeace is not passive\, it is something we act
ively seek and embody\nUnity is stronger than division\n\nIf someone asks
why the bells are ringing\, the answer is simple: For Peace. \nWe will ri
ng bells on Wade Avenue: \n\nEvery Monday\, weekly\, from September throug
 h November 2 at 6 PM.\n\nIf you have questions\, contact Gary Smith and/or
Ken and Merrilee Jacobson (contact info in Breeze or via office.cucc@gma
