workshop cuts through the hype and focuses on what AI can genuinely do fo
r real people in real workflows. Led by **Scott Hanselman** (VP\, Develope
r Community at Microsoft)\, the session is practical\, grounded\, and inte
ractive.\n\nWe'll look at:\n\n* Large vs. small language models\, and when
model size actually matters\n* NPUs and edge AI\, and how to think critic
ally about AI performance claims\n* Practical productivity patterns that r
educe toil instead of adding it\n* How to spot inflated claims and avoid t
he grift\n\nBring a laptop\, an open mind\, and a healthy dose of skeptici
sm. No PhD required.\n\nFree\, but registration is required and seats are
 limited. Register at [steamcircuit.com](https://www.steamcircuit.com/event

DESCRIPTION:Please note different time and location this month at [UpStart
Collective](https://www.upstartcollective.org/) at the U.S. Bancorp Tower
(a.k.a. Big Pink). Please RSVP on MeetUp. Tuesday September 8\, 2026 fr
 om 6:30pm to 8:30pm.\n\nCoinciding with [devopsdays Portland\, OR](https:/
 /devopsdays.org/events/2026-portland-or/welcome/)\, Sept 8-10\, 2026.\n\nI
n v18\, Postgres got temporal primary keys\, unique constraints\, and fore
 ign keys (with `NO ACTION`). Hopefully in v19 we'll have `UPDATE/DELETE FO
R PORTION OF`. So it's a good time to start thinking about migrating your
schema to a temporal structure. Some advantages include:\n\n- Easier queri
es and joins to reconstruct historical data.\n- A better way to do soft-de
letes (preserving referential integrity).\n- No bugs from foreign key refe
rences to since-updated data.\n- A less ad hoc way of representing histori
cal data.\n\nThis talk will explore how to migrate your schema to include
 application-time `daterange` and `tstzrange` columns. I'll use an existing
schema for a time-tracking and invoicing application (used by me for over
12 years)\, showing the pain points of the old structure\, not sparing my
pride at some bad decisions\, and give an approach to bring it all into a
nicer temporal structure.\n\nWe will also talk about some remaining pain
points in using temporal tables\, and suggestions to mitigate them.\nIf yo
u are contemplating a move to temporal tables\, this talk will give you an
overview of the landscape.\n\nPresented by Paul Jungwirth:\n\nPaul is a f
reelance software developer in Portland\, Oregon.\nHe has built applicatio
ns with Postgres since 2010 and is the author of several extensions.\nHis
Postgres contributions include work on GiST indexes\, multiranges\, and SQ
 L:2011 application-time features.\n\nTags: postgres\, postgresql\n\nImport

 PM – 8:00 PM\nLocation: SteepleJack Brewing\, Fireside Room\, 2400 NE Br

A big thank you to SuSE for sponsoring catering at SteepleJack\, as well a

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Virtual Lunch & Learn presented by Dr. Yoanne Cl
ovis as she explores how PhD and MD founders can adapt their communication
approach as their companies grow.\n\nAs the scientist who discovered and
developed your product\, you are the best person in the company to explain
the science to other experts in your field. You can close the first round
and convince the first hires\, usually also scientists. But scientists of
ten fall into the expert trap\, when your deep expertise prevents them fro
m connecting with non-experts\, like angel investors and non-scientist exe
cutives who could become your next hire or your next partner. What made yo
u credible in the lab becomes a liability as the team grows.\n\nThis sessi
on looks at the specific pattern PhD and MD founders fall into somewhere b
etween fifteen people and sixty: the founder keeps leaning on the science
and insists on leading the communications alone\, long after the company h
as outgrown that approach. Dr. Clovis will walk through when things tend t
o change structurally\, why “I’ll handle it myself” stops working\,
and what early-stage and pre-Phase II leaders can put in place now to main
tain scientific integrity while growing the company.\n\nTags: lunchandlear

Hot Topics\, Cool Heads\n\nEvery team has conversations where stakes are
high\, opinions clash\, and silence is just as dangerous as conflict. This
interactive workshop gives you practical techniques to facilitate those m
oments rather than dread them.\nIn this 90-minute\, in-person session at N
orth Bank Innovations at The VIC\, members of the Pacific Northwest Facili
tators Guild share their go-to methods for keeping tempers cool when hot t
opics arise. Through hands-on exercises and group discussion\, you'll focu
 s on group facilitation (team meetings\, cross-functional discussions\, le
 adership off-sites)\, not one-on-one conflict resolution.\n\nYou'll leave
with several facilitation techniques for cooling down high-stakes group co
nversations\, plus a simple plan for trying at least one of them out in a
meeting sometime in the next two weeks.\n\nABOUT THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST FAC
ILITATORS GUILD\nThe PNWFG is a professional collective of independent fac
ilitators and small firms serving Oregon and Washington. The Guild exists
because organizations in this region deserve better access to skilled faci
litation when it matters most: the high-stakes conversations\, the stalled
innovations\, the cross-functional tangles\, the decisions that keep gett
ing deferred. Members bring a range of methodologies and deep experience.\
