The trip is quicker in James Joyce’s Ulysses (1922)— a single day—but\, as in its Homeric antece dent\, an aging hero must wander in search of home but\, unlike Homer’s hero\, his journey is limited to a single day. \nAnd what a day it is! Sha rp and funny descriptions of Dublin\, dazzling innovations to the very pos sibilities of the English language\, and nuanced (if often obscure) engage ments with literature and history transform an ordinary June 16th into the stuff of legend. Bloom’s path sometimes crosses\, sometimes aligns with the one taken by Stephen Daedalus\, familiar from Joyce’s earlier work A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Although the third main character Molly Bloom\, Leopold’s wife\, never leaves home\, thoughts of her haun t his travels. \nJoyce doesn’t mention Homer in Ulysses\, although the s erial version\, published in The Little Review (1918–1920)\, assigned Ho meric titles to the episodes (removed in the full version). So\, even if h e wavered as to the extent of the relationship between the works\, it rema ins true that both works are “beautifully all embracing” in their “v ision of human concerns.” In writing Ulysses\, Joyce explores what such concerns look like from the perspective of a decidedly non-heroic modernit y\, likewise trying to find a way back from a grueling and pointless war. \nWith Chritopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” providing a cinematic versio n of Homer’s epic\, what better time to join Joyce in his rethinking of Homer’s powerful story of disillusion\, desire\, and the always pressing question of how to find a way home. It is a novel that has a his tory of dividing opinions\, regularly hitting banned book lists: Written i n the mid-late 19th century\, contemporary Christians believed the novel w as atheistic\, and contemporary atheists believed the novel is too Christi an. Regardless of which it is\, the novel is certainly an attempt to tear down established norms and create a blueprint for a new societal order in Russia. Dostoevsky himself spent time in a labor camp earlier in his life\ , accused of various crimes including fears from the Ministry of Internal Affairs that he was a member of a revolutionary literary group. \nIf Tolst oy’s War and Peace\, written a decade earlier\, was an attempt to captur e the totality of political and interpersonal life\, then The Brothers Kar amazov is an attempt to capture the totality of internal life. It is a pro ject with no less of a goal than creating a new society and new religion t hrough the demonstration of the tripartite souls of the titular brothers: Aloysha\, the exuberant\, youthful monk-in-training\; Ivan\, the depressed \, ruminating academic\, and Dimitri\, the eldest\, sensualist\, and self- destructive soldier. Each character represents a period of life and a way of looking at the world\; though archetypes\, they also feel like people y ou may have known. When their miserable and cruel estranged father is murd ered\, all three have to face his self-destructive aspects in themselves: Why are modern humans miserable when we know we could be happy\, and why c an’t we seem to get out of our own way? And who among Fyodor Zaramazov ’s orbit killed him\, and why? \nWe will be reading the Peaver and Volok honsky translation\, itself a major turning point in the novel’s popular ity in English\, shedding some of the stuffy\, plodding\, confusing langua ge of earlier translations in favor a readable and populist style. In this c lass\, we’ll look at the openings of several short stories and creative nonfiction pieces with a special focus on the craft: how was the story wri tten in a way that makes it successful? What aspects might make a reader ( and editor) keep reading? \nWe’ll borrow themes and ideas from those st ories for in our in-class writing exercises. Whet her of metaphysical and philosophical significance\, or the many scientifi c and biological iterations of this powerful symbol\, the multi-faceted sp iral will be our muse. \nIn this 3-part generative writing workshop\, we ’ll expand our writing across multiple genres including poetry\, essay\, and narrative with prompts inspired by multicultural authors. Thematicall y\, we’ll move through Irish-Celtic mysticism\, spiraling seasons of eme rgence\, Afro-futurist science fiction\, and our personal place within the great spiral. We’ll engage impactful elements of style and craft from o ur mentor texts like punctuation\, dialogue\, and symbol to enhance writin g of resonance. Some time will be devoted to giving and receiving feedback as well as sharing in a supportive space.
