Perhaps Christian Bale should be given an award just for finally smiling\ , laughing\, and charming his way through a role. But it could be argued t hat\, as Dr. Frankenstein’s misunderstood creation\, he does get to flas h his trademark grimace at least once. And sister Maggie gives her normall y intense brother the chance to dance ala Fred Astaire and only occasional ly scowl. The performances are boundary busting\, allowing each performer to play outside their safe zones.\n\nGyllenhaal taunts her audience by mas hing up a monster movie with a romantic comedy\, a tragedy\, a gangster op us\, a lavish musical\, takes a swing into “Natural Born Killers” terr itory\, passionately confirms the “Me Too” movement\, and drops it all in a 1980’s punk-informed version of the 1930’s. For some it proved t oo much\, and too unstable a mixture to find engaging. For others it felt like the second coming of that much-missed mad auteur\, Ken Russell\, at h is most insane and entertaining.
