But the two gentlemen\, K&D\, rather followed the t radition of the continental cosmic “dancefloor” of the 1980s\, which s earched for a universal language of dance music\, influenced by hip hop\, rare groove\, dub\, new wave and last but not least\, of music that stood out between all those categories. \nAs the first post-acid jazz production s of labels like Ninja Tune or Mo Wax heralded a new era\, Kruder & Dorfme ister were already a step ahead of those protagonists. Theirs are songs the probe th e very nature of existence\, that strive to find the answers to the fundam ental questions that being human raises\, and that don’t flinch away fro m any form of self-reflection whatsoever. That’s been the case since the band-lead vocalist Donovan Melero\, guitarists Shane Gann and Aric Garcia \, bassist John Stirrat and drummer Allen Casillas-formed in Chico\, CA in 2009\, but which is especially the case on cut. turn. fade. back\, their seventh full-length. Indeed\, even for a band whose album titles veer betw een being suggestive of something more and existentially profound\, this r ecord truly goes the distance\, encompassing the complete cycle of life wi th its four monosyllabic words. \n “The album touches on a lot of topics such as military atrocities\, humanitarian crises\, addiction and love be ing lost\, as well as death\,” says Garcia. “So many of those things a re recurring\, and as much as we’d like for things to change and be bett er and live in a perfect world\, it’s more that things seem to get bette r for a little bit and then take a turn-and before we know it\, we’re ri ght back where we started.” \nAcross its 11 songs\, cut. turn. fade. bac k captures the cyclical nature of all those things\, as well as life itsel f in general. That wasn’t the specific intention when the band began wri ting the record\, but when Melero started writing lyrics for and to the mu sic\, that’s the overarching theme that began to emerge. 2023’s previo us record\, Divine Inner Tension\, had seen Hail The Sun intentionally rel inquish creative control to the universe\, and they continued with that mi ndset on this one as well\, by bending to its whims. “For the most part\ ,” says Melero\, “we’re always living in that mindset of creating ou r own realities\, doing what we want\, and letting the universe do its thi ng. I would describe this as another cycle of living in general. Trying to write anything to a theme or concept can be incredibly inhibiting for me\ , so we try to tie shit together after the fact. But it also comes from wh at I call a higher frequency mindset-an elevated purpose of trying to exis t knowing we are the universe.” \nAs connected as we are to the universe \, and as much as it exists within us\, the band says it’s important to note that we’re also travelling through it. As such\, it was the things that happened to the band along the way-both on a personal level and on a more universal scale-that manifested themselves as topics on this record. And while the themes on this record certainly straddle a great divide\, th ere’s one song in particular that carries more weight than most on the p ersonal side of things. In fact\, “Relapse Is A Love Affair” is almost as personal as it gets\, detailing Melero’s inadvertent descent back in to addiction. After a bout of kidney stones some two-and-a-half years ago\ , the singer began taking his medication too much and too often\, which in turn led him to doing fentanyl. “I’m pretty outspoken about my sobri ety and how long I’ve been sober\,” the singer says\, “but that shit snuck up on me. And to my surprise\, shortly before my 14 years clean\, I relapsed for about six to eight weeks. But then I got clean again. I flew to Massachusetts and went through withdrawals. I was with my parents and it was a really awful time\, but it inspired that song.” \nJust as 2014 ’s second album\, Wake\, contained “Anti-Eulogy (I Hope You Stay Dead) ”\, a song about an active addiction framed as if addressing a person\, so “Relapse Is A Love Affair” personifies his experience in a similar way. \n“This time\,” he continues\, “I associated it with a love aff air. It feels like a lust that’s always around and can always catch me c heating. You never really know when\, but it’s there and it’s up to me to recognize that because it can really catch me off-guard. It felt like a long-lost lover had come back and was like\, ‘Do you remember me? Do y ou remember how good this was?’ And I had to pull away again for obvious reasons. The chorus\, in particular\, reminded me how quickly I can fall back into that\, because I didn’t recognize the person I was or the thin gs I was doing again.” \nIt’s a viscerally powerful moment among a who le series of viscerally powerful moments. For the first time in their care er\, Hail The Sun worked with production outfit Beach Noise\, whose experi ence is much more steeped in the hip-hop world-most notably\, they worked on a good chunk of Kendrick Lamar’s acclaimed 2022 album\, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. On paper\, it seems like a drastic shift\, but the reali ty is less dramatic-Garcia actually went to college with a member of Beach Noise\, so they’ve been in each other’s orbits for a while now. Yet a t the same time\, Hail The Sun wanted to return to their roots of being a band in a room and jamming live. In order to do so\, they went to Pus Cave rn recording studios in Sacramento with Beach Noise in tow to craft the so ngs that had mostly been written already. So while cut. turn. fade. back d oesn’t see the band flip genres or anything\, Beach Noise definitely had an active role in the creation of these songs\, as well as their final pr oduct. “Typically\, it’s just been the band who writes and works on ou r songs\,” says Garcia\, “but this time around Beach Noise were in the room offering suggestions here and there. Most of the time they’d let u s do our thing\, but when inspiration struck they’d offer suggestions to guide things and let us explore avenues we might not have done otherwise. ” \nAnd so\, from the moment the post-hardcore lilt of “The Drooling C lass” kicks this record off until the passionate intensity of “War Cri mes” brings it to an end in a cacophony that emulates the violent confli cts that inspired it\, cut. turn. fade. back becomes part of the band’s own cycle-re-establishing who they are while simultaneously (but subtly) r eshaping their identity. Just listen to the spiteful\, coruscating energy of “There’s No Place In Heaven For Fakes”\, the shapeshifting\, surr ound-sound production of “Insensitive Tempo” and “Blight”\, and th e almost constant crescendo of “I Can Tell By The Scars” and it’s cl ear that Hail The Sun are as intentional and fervent about their art as th ey ever have been. The final two tracks on the record-“Rightless Destiny ” (a song\, says Meloro\, “about a takeover and how the one thing you can’t touch is people’s spirits or their thoughts”) and “War Crime s”-are both emotional juggernauts\, but they also dial up the album’s overt political overtones\, taking aim at the damaging\, harrowing effects of colonialism and imperialism\, but tied in with deep\, probing question s about destiny and providence. At the same time\, they serve as affirmati ons about the strength of the human spirit. While Meloro’s own personal example of that is encapsulated in “Relapse Is A Love Affair”\, those last two songs showcase it on a more collective\, universal scale-the unde rbelly of the iceberg that contains all that profound meaning. \n“It doe sn’t matter if people take away the intended message from these songs\, ” says Meloro\, “and I’m certainly not going to police it\, but we d o\, as always\, want to encourage critical thinking. Fifteen years in\, I love that we’ve been allowed this fan base to speak to. I feel very grat eful and fortunate\, and I hope that it keeps carrying us forward continue s to be the thing that we can sustain life from.” \nIronically\, given t he title and the theme of the record\, this could well be the album that s ees them break the cycle for good. He spent his childhood thi eving 7″ records by the Jackson Five\, The Beatles and various Motown ar tists from his older brothers while living in the very liberal upper West Side –  with the background of New York City’s fiscal crisis and all the turmoil and lawlessness that went with that.   \nAfter finally savin g up his own money to purchase Steve Miller’s “Fly Like An Eagle” al bum\, Diamond started to learn to play the drums. \nSoon after he discove red punk rock and it was game over. That was until he heard a rap mix tape and then it was game over again. Once discovering Reggae through the infl uence of punk bands like The Clash and The Slits – it was game over a th ird time. \nHe went on to form Beastie Boys with Adam Yauch\, aka MCA\, in the early 80’s. While inspired by hardcore punk\, the boys listened all the while to every new rap 12 inch that came out and eventually rapping t hemselves. They soon began merging their many influences in what would go on to become a multi-record\, multi-platinum and multi-decade career. \nTh e band went on to win a bunch awards\, such as Grammys\, the highly acclai med Blackshere Award\, a very spirited Brass Monkey Award and the key to K ansas City\, Missouri… though this is still shrouded in a bit of mystery .  In 2012 Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. \nMike D\, MCA and Adrock oversaw all aspects of their artistic output fr om music production to co-authoring videos with esteemed directors like Sp ike Jonze and Nathaniel Hörnblowér\, to spending countless hours on thei r live visuals.   \nIn the early 90s\, Beastie Boys founded their own Gr and Royal record label and magazine\, creating multiple outlets to turn th eir visual\, musical and literary ideas and inspirations on full display. \nDiamond continued to apply this aesthetic (non) sense to home design\, o nline content and even curating a multi-week group showcase at LA MOCA cal led “Transmission LA- AV Club”. The show was centered around the relat ionship of visual art and music\, staged with Jeffrey Deitch. To bring thi s point home\, the show included a full music program as well as food by p ioneering chef\, Roy Choi.  \nIn 2018\, along with his bandmate\, Adam Ho rovitz\, Diamond co-authored Beastie Boys Book\, which told the story of t he band in its own words and reached #1 on The New York Times Best Seller list. Joh nson hails from\, is a largely flat expanse. Zipping through it on the hig hway\, you’ll see cities and towns rise up in the distance\, but blink a nd you’ll miss other man-made rejoinders to horizontal living dotting th e landscape: hill after hill\, built from the refuse of the past-landfills . Some of these hills make for great sledding spots\, parks\, and trails. Others turn organic waste into compost. The Landfill\, Fruit Bats’ June 12\, 2026 album from Merge Records\, is something else entirely: a mounta in dominating the landscape of Johnson’s heart. \nThis being a Fruit Bat s record\, one scales that mountain to take in the view\, to see the futur e spread out as wide and endless as the Midwestern plains. “But the moun tain that gives us this vantage point\,” Johnson says\, “is made out o f the trash that we’ve created\, the collective weight of the past and w here it’s taken us.” When he details that view on title track and lead single “The Landfill”-“a holy vision / of what could be / and could n’t be / and could have been”-it’s thrilling to hear him sent soarin g by a full complement of instruments. But what’s truly stunning is how\ , in his recontouring from could to couldn’t to could have been\, he has lost none of the vulnerability that was brought to the foreground of his songwriting by 2025’s solo outing\, Baby Man. \nOver the course of his now 25-year career under the moniker\, most of Eric D. Johnson’s output as Fruit Bats has been the product of patience and fine-tuning. His songs\ , to borrow a phrase\, are slow growers\, given life on albums that encomp ass long stretches of time and memory. Baby Man changed that-he disallow ed himself from referring to material he’d been working on before laying the album down\, utilizing the morning pages technique of stream-of-consc iousness\, observational songwriting which flowed directly into his aftern oon recording sessions. It was both a breathtaking document of Johnson’s skill as a singer-songwriter and an unvarnished account of the two weeks in which he recorded the album. \nBaby Man’s closeness to Johnson’s h eart\, and the close attention to his voice and instrument its minimalist- maximalist ethos required\, uncorked something in him as he wrote towards a new full-band effort. “That session was over\,” he explains\, “but there was way more to explore. I liked the immediacy of it\, and I wanted to see how that would translate into a full-band Fruit Bats record.” \n Within weeks\, he was back in a studio\, this time with his band-David Daw da (bass)\, Josh Mease (guitars\, synth)\, Frank LoCrasto (piano\, synth)\ , and Kosta Galanopoulos (drums)-with whom Johnson has spent over a decade building Fruit Bats into one of the most in-demand live acts in indie roc k. Listening to The Landfill\, it’s not hard to understand why: simply put\, this band smokes. \nProducing the initial recording sessions in Wash ington’s Bear Creek Studios\, Johnson set out to capture “the sound of this band I constantly marvel at\, the feeling of being in a room with mu sicians you love and trust enough to let them cook.” They laid most of i t down on the floor-no click tracks\, no comped vocals\, and minimal overd ubs-with frequent collaborator Thom Monahan returning to provide additiona l production and The Landfill’s final mix. “It’s how we do things with my other band\, Bonny Light Horseman\, and I was curious to see how i t would work with Fruit Bats\,” Johnson notes. “It’s both a very per sonal record\, and my most collaborative to date.” \nIt’s also the mos t live a Fruit Bats record has been since 2009’s The Ruminant Band\, an d in paring back the number of tracks that typically layer a full-band son g\, the psychedelic\, technicolor dreaminess of their sound is more vivid than ever. Time and space melt into the sublime as the band gels around Jo hnson’s hazy croon on “That Goddamn Sun\,” stretching out to accommo date him as he trips from California to North Carolina. In striking a bala nce between ecstatic romance and melancholia\, “Think Aboutcha” occupi es the blissful-but-doomed intersection of the E Street Band and Paul McCa rtney\, playful but playing for stakes that are larger than life\, while “Perhaps We’re a Storm” charges headlong into the unknown. \nAll of these songs-most of the songs on The Landfill\, in fact-mark themselves i mmediately as some of the best in Eric D. Johnson’s ever-expanding songb ook\, seekers and anthems alike.
