\n\nStar 80 is presented by Director Fits as part of a series on Fashion a

choices when it comes to clothing. We focus on their personal style\, the

DESCRIPTION:Portland Movie Club\n**Film Noir Meet-Up:** ***The Postman Alw
ays Rings Twice*** **(1946)**\n\n**Let’s talk about movies!** Join movie
club member Jenna M. for *The Postman Always Rings Twice* (1946)\, starri
ng Lana Turner\, John Garfield\, Cecil Kellaway\, and Hume Cronyn. The fil
m follows Frank Chambers\, a restless drifter who takes a job at a roadsid
e diner and quickly becomes involved with Cora\, the beautiful and unhappy
wife of the owner. Their attraction soon turns into a dangerous plot to m
urder Cora’s husband\, setting off a chain of events involving suspicion
\, betrayal\, guilt\, and the consequences of trying to get away with murd
er.\n\n**Here’s how The Portland Movie Club meet-ups work:**\nJust like
a book club\, we watch the movie on our own time before we meet.\nWe'll me
et at Lucky Lab on SE Hawthorne at 4pm on the scheduled date.\nWe'll typic
ally have a sign at our table(s)\, but at least we'll try to be obvious an
d identifiable.\nGrab some food and drinks to support our generous hosts a
nd spend some time socializing and discussing this movie with us.\n\n**A F
ew Notes about the film:**\n*The Postman Always Rings Twice* was directed
by Tay Garnett and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1946\, based on Jame
s M. Cain’s 1934 novel. The film is one of the classic examples of Holly
 wood film noir\, built around Cain’s familiar themes of lust\, greed\, c
rime\, and fatalism. Lana Turner’s performance as Cora Smith was a major
departure from her glamorous star image\, while John Garfield brings a re
stless\, cynical energy to Frank Chambers. The chemistry between the two d
rives much of the film\, but what makes the story especially noir is the s
ense that their choices have already set them on a doomed path. The film w
as controversial for its time because of its sexual themes and its frank t
reatment of murder\, but it was also a major commercial success. With its
roadside diner setting\, morally compromised characters\, tense plotting\,
and increasingly oppressive atmosphere\, it’s a particularly good examp
le of how Hollywood transformed hard-boiled crime fiction into classic noi
r.\n\n**Viewing Options for the film:**\nAs of the date of this posting\,
the film is available to stream for free with ads on Tubi and Plex\, and t
hrough HBO Max/Amazon Channel\, and YouTube TV. It is also available to re
nt or buy through Amazon Video\, Apple TV\, Google Play\, YouTube\, and Fa
ndango At Home.\nFor physical viewing\, Movie Madness has two copies avail
able\, as well as MultCo. library having two copies. If anyone knows of an
y additional streaming or viewing options\, please comment on the event.\n
\n**About the Film Noir group:**\nThis meetup explores classic and neo-noi
 r films\, focusing on shadowy visuals\, morally gray characters\, doomed r
omances\, and crime stories where nobody’s hands are clean. We’ll watc
h a mix of essential noirs and modern films inspired by the genre\, paying
attention to themes like fate\, corruption\, obsession\, and alienation.
These films often deal with violence\, crime\, and heavy subject matter\,
so content can be intense at times\; checking a site like [www.doesthedogd
ie.com](http://www.doesthedogdie.com/) is encouraged if you prefer content
warnings.\n\n**Tips:**\nOnce again\, we do not watch the movie at the mee
t-up. All members watch the movie on their own time before we meet to disc
uss it. You don't have to watch the movie to join us\, but it'll be more f
un if you do.\nSome people like to take notes or find books and articles r
elated to the film and its subject matter\; feel free to bring those thing
s along if there's something you'd like to share with the group.\nAt the e
nd of the discussion\, we'll pass around a ballot where we can vote on a s
late of options for the next discussion.\n\n**Films previously discussed i
 n the Film Noir group:**\n*Gun Crazy\, Dial M for Murder\, Sudden Fear\, T
he Maltese Falcon\, Kiss Me Deadly\,* *Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?\,*
and *Stranger on the Third Floor.*\n\n**The Portland Movie Club is on Disc

\, the film utilizes a wealth of archival footage\, home video\, intimate
interviews\, and Beattie’s striking personal artwork to convey her vibra
nt personality and voice. Matlin sought out acclaimed documentary filmmake
r Irene Taylor who has been exploring themes of hearing loss and family in
many of her award-winning films for decades.  Together Taylor and Matlin
decided to excavate Shelly’s extraordinary story. By bringing Beattie
’s story to light\, Matlin and Taylor illuminate how the hearing world c
an be an isolating and cruel place for those who are deaf. Beattie found s
afety by protecting herself with a strong\, physical exterior\, then becam
e a top international bodybuilder in the 1990s\, and starred as the charac
ter “Siren” on TV’s hugely popular “American Gladiators”. But be
neath her tough armor was a troubled and sensitive spirit. The film traces
Beattie’s early challenges with deafness in a family that struggled to
understand her\, detailing her journey to breaking barriers in sports and
media\, and highlighting her advocacy for mental health awareness all befo
re her death at 40 years old. Matlin’s quest to learn about Beattie is a
n exploration into what it takes to overcome inner demons and personal str
uggles\, while turning deafness into a strength to transcend limitations a
 nd shatter boundaries.

DESCRIPTION:A widow in Milan makes a living as a clairvoyant\, taking adva
ntage of the superstitions of her wealthy clients. Her son\, however\, pos
sesses real powers\, and is wandering deep into forbidden corners of witch
craft. In ARCANA\, the sorcery of the South collides with a modernized Ita
ly\, dredging up a darkness lurking underneath an urban crust\, and threat
ening to disintegrate the fragile borders of reality. A revolutionary nigh
tmare starring cult actresses Lucia Bosè and Tina Aumont\, the film has b
