DESCRIPTION:This class is designed to demystify the editing process with a
pplicable tools for editing at each stage of your draft. From fiction to c
reative nonfiction\, this workshop offers in-depth looks at different edit
orial tools to use to help you refine your story and your language. In thi
 s four-week workshop\, we’ll review practical\, applicable revision tool
s for each stage of the revision process. Then\, we’ll practice some of
those editing tools on your work in class. Homework includes expanded edit
ing exercises\, which we’ll discuss the following week. \nPlease bring:\
n● A notebook and at least 3 different colored writing utensils\n● For
day 1: a printed first page of something you’re working on\nEach writer
will be sent home with an editing checklist and editing goals for the com
ing weeks.\nAccess Program\nWe want our writing classes and seminars to be
accessible to everyone\, regardless of income and background. We understa
nd that our tuition structure can present obstacles for some people. Our A
ccess Program offers writing class and seminar tuitions at a reduced rate.
Most writing classes have at least one access spot available. \nPlease ap
ply here for access rate tuition. Contact Susan Moore at susan@literary-ar
ts.org if you have questions. \nLiaison position\nEvery in-person class an
d seminar at Literary Arts has one liaison position. Liaisons perform spec
ific duties for each class meeting. If you are a liaison for a class or se
minar\, the full amount of your tuition is covered by Literary Arts. \nApp

DESCRIPTION:Sketching is\n\nSketching is at the heart of this four-week na
ture journaling series among the various tree collections in the Arboretum
.  Each week we’ll settle into a different collection - getting to kno
w individual trees through close observation\, quiet attention and the act
of putting pencil or pen to paper.\n\nYou’ll learn to see bark texture\
, branch structure\, leaf shape and seasonal change not as challenges to d
raw “correctly\,” but as an invitation into deeper noticing.  We’l
l combine field sketching with nature writing\, then layer in color using
your preferred materials - colored pencil\, watercolor or a mix of both.\n
\nNo drawing experience required\, just curiosity and a willingness to sit
with a tree for a while.  Come away with a growing journal of trees you
’ll never look at the same way again.\n\nSupplies: A journal or noteboo
 k with unlined paper\, pencil\, eraser\, Sakura Pigma Micron pens\, option
al watercolors and/or colored pencils.\n\nPlease note we will be hiking to
various spots within the Arboretum.  Benches and tables will be availab
le in most places\, but not all. Bring a lightweight blanket or towel to
sit on\, and keep your supplies minimal for easy movement throughout the p
 ark.\n\n Registration includes September 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25\n Visit th
e September 4th listing to register for the 4 week series\n Registration
closes Thursday\, September 3rd at 4:00pm\n Class details will be emaile

 mber 19\, 2-5 pm\n\n\nOn the afternoon of Saturday\, September 19\, 2026\,
Maitripa College will host a gathering for women\, marking the close of t
he Hidden Happiness Tour’s Portland visit\, led by Ani Choyang\, Venerab
le Yönten\, and Maitripa College leadership. The intention is simple: to
fill the space with women’s practice and to connect with one another wi
th care and attention. Through sitting practice\, guided reflection\, and
shared conversation\, the afternoon will turn toward the distinct qualitie
s women have long carried within the tradition\, a fierceness capable of m
eeting anger\, fear\, and mortality without flinching\, alongside a steady
\, strong attention that holds space for others to do the same. Consider i
t a first gathering\, seeds rather than harvest\; what grows from it will
depend on who comes and what each person brings. In person in Portland on
ly. Enquire for details at education@maitripa.org.\n\nAbout Ani Choyang\n
Ani Choyang was born in Tibet and escaped to India at age 18. She became a
nun in 2003 under the guidance of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. She
received the Rapjampa Degree (similar to a Master’s degree) in 2022 afte
r completing a 17-year course of Buddhist studies. She is in the third  y
ear of Geshema program (Similar to a PhD). \n\nShe is a Tenzin Gyatso Scie
nce Scholar and was one of the first Tibetan nuns to attend a two-year sci
ence training program at Emory University as part of the Emory Tibet Scien
ce Initiative. \nAni Choyang also participated in a science research int
ernship at Northwestern University in 2022\, where she received in-depth t
raining in the theory and methods of neuroscience. \nCurrently\, Ani Choy
ang serves as Library and Learning Canter Project Coordinator at Jangchub
Choeling Nunnery in Mundgod\, South India. She also serves as a core c
ommittee member of the Tenzin Gyatso Science Association. \nAs part of he
r own leadership training\, Ani Choyang travels extensively\, deepening
her connection to new people and places and sharing her journey as a tradi
tional Tibetan Buddhist nun in a globalized\, secular world.

 1–27\nFri/Sat 7:30\, Sun 2\n$38 per person \nImago Theatre\, 17 SE 8th A
 venue\nimagotheatre.com \nTICKETS\nhttps://onthestage.tickets/show/imago-t
heatre/6a56bc1797fd36b14c05ee83 \nTickets also available at the door. Thea
tre opens one hour before showtime. All seats $38. The show is for mature
audiences. \nThe Dark\, performed by Joe Cullen (Salomé\, Design for Livi
ng) and Cincinnati\, performed by Diane Slamp (Geography of a Horse Dreame
r\, Design for Living). Direction by Jerry Mouawad. \nTHE DARK \nA man in
his thirties grapples with a fundamental question: does he truly exist? Th
is dilemma\, first encountered at age four\, drives the narrative of this
ten-page script. Director Jerry Mouawad calls it “the perfect warm-up fo
r Nigro’s work and his intriguing solos\, many of which take place in a
theatre.” \nCINCINNATI \n“It’s hard not to feel that this piece was
written specifically for Imago\,” says Slamp\, who portrays a lost profe
ssor navigating a world of tragedy\, sex\, and philosophical diatribes. He
r diversions reveal a desperate search for redemption amidst personal disa
ster. \n“Cincinnati is multi-layered\, blending mythology and realism wi
th an ontological examination of life and being\,” explains Mouawad. “
It’s a gem for an audience seeking a new kind of theatre. Don’t let th
e heavy themes mislead you\; this is a small spectacle with humor and high
style. I see it as a consciousness tangling with forces of nature\, an un
 certain reality\, and a triad of personas—real or unreal—in a lecture
that pushes the boundaries of endurance.” \nProduction Credits:\nLight D
esign: Ronnie Rantis\nCostume Design: Laura Helgeson\nSound Design: Myrrh
Larsen \nNote: For Mature Audiences \nIn October\, Imago returns with Octo
ber Flight\, featuring more solos by Don Nigro.

DESCRIPTION:For one night only\, join comedian Lexis Shardé as she record
s her very first comedy special. \nAfter more than a decade of performing
across multiple markets\, Lexis returns to one of Portland’s most iconic
venues\, Kelly’s Olympian\, with the hour she’s spent years developin
 g. This performance is a fast-paced blend of stand-up\, storytelling\, mul
 timedia\, and musical comedy that’s clever\, relatable\, and completely
original. \nLexis has appeared on CBS alongside Iliza Shlesinger\, studied
improv and sketch comedy at the legendary Upright Citizens Brigade in Los
Angeles\, and built a reputation for creating comedy experiences that lea
ve audiences feeling like they’re hanging out with a hilarious friend. \
nBut this show is different\, it’s more than a collection of jokes. It
’s a celebration of embracing the parts of ourselves we were once told t
 o hide. It’s funny\, nostalgic\, unexpectedly heartfelt\, and the most p
ersonal show Lexis has ever written. Every story\, every song\, and every
laugh has led to this moment. \nWhether you’ve followed Lexis for years
or you’re seeing her for the first time\, you’ll be part of a mileston
e she’ll never forget. Your laughter will live on in the finished specia
 l. \nThe evening will be hosted by the always hilarious Juan Denmark\, wit
h a special opening set from Cody Chasteen\, making this a stacked night o
f Portland comedy from start to finish. \nBecause this performance is bein
g professionally filmed\, audience members are encouraged to arrive early\
, settle in before showtime\, and bring the energy. \nEvery laugh counts.
Come be part of comedy history.
