DESCRIPTION:Want to know more about the inspirations behind the Winslow Ho
 mer’s works featured in the Winslow Homer: Painter\, Etcher exhibit? Joi
 n the South Portland Historical Society’s Seth Goldstein as he shares in
 formation about the maritime culture and historic events that fascinated H
 omer and led him to paint some of his most iconic works. This illustrated 
 presentation will address topics such as the hazards of the historic North
  Atlantic fishery and the Civil War and how they are portrayed in Homer’
 s compositions \n\n\n\nBio: Seth Goldstein grew up on Cape Cod where he de
 veloped his passion for maritime history. He received his bachelor’s deg
 ree in European History from the University of California at Santa Cruz an
 d his master’s degree in World History from Northeastern University. Set
 h has taught at the University of New England\, Southern Maine Community C
 ollege and the Maine College of Art and Design. He is affiliated with the 
 Atlantic Black Box Project\, a Portland-based nonprofit dedicated to resea
 rching and sharing New England’s marginalized history. Seth’s research
  and writing has been featured in exhibits at the Maine Historical Society
 \, Portland Museum of Art and Maine Maritime Museum. He is currently the D
 evelopment and Museum Director for the South Portland Historical Society.
