Victoryland start ed in Philly 2023 with the release of tape\, Sprain\, which echoed more of what the Philly scene was dishing out: lo-fi\, tape-recorded rock with a capital R. It was the collaborative efforts of producer Dan Howard that br ought the new vision and sound into full focus.Dan and Julian previously w orked on Julian’s now-defunct Texas-to-Philly based band Blood’s last LP\, a collaborative effort between six bandmates. The week of Thanksgiving 2024\, Flynn’s wife and kids were on a cruise with his in-laws while he stayed home to work. I t was there he received the call that his mother died. “It was the only time in my life where if I wanted to see my children on a dime\, I couldn ’t. They were in the middle of the fucking ocean\; I felt completely iso lated\,” says Flynn. Two days later\, a knock at his door revealed guita rist Alex Henery and bassist Nick Hinsch\, who flew in from across the cou ntry to surprise their grieving friend.\nThough they convened as friends\, music started to share the space with them\, too. “We went to Pat’s h ouse just to support him in a dark time and then\, in that\, we ended up w riting music\,” says Henery. “It came out of a really good place\, of us just wanting to write music together in that moment\, and that freed us up to experiment.” Reflecting on it now\, Flynn cuts to the core of wha t has kept Fiddlehead alive all these years: “I don’t think you get be tter friends than this.”\nWith new songs unexpectedly forming\, and a dr ive to deepen the scope of Fiddlehead’s musical landscape\, Dow received a fortuitous message from producer Alex Farrar (Wednesday\, Archers of Lo af\, M.J. Lenderman) offering to record new Fiddlehead material. The band felt it was worth it to see what would come from a weekend in his North Ca rolina studio\, and what resulted is Baby I’ll Change\, a new three song EP that pushes the boundaries of what Fiddlehead can be.\nRaucous opener “The Dogs” is the sound of a band reaffirming their commitments to one another\, and sharing that joy as one cohesive unit. Flynns sings about e ach bandmate with genuine love and appreciation as he simultaneously tries to process even more loss\, a recurring theme in the band’s beloved dis cography. “This is a gift of life to have four guys who I have no dysfun ction with\,” he says. “Those guys are my brothers and I wanted to sto p playing with them? Now I want to keep this thing going until the wheels fall off.” Next comes “Porchlight\,” an exhilarating cut of alternat e tuning riffs and stirring vocal melodies. Finally there’s “Baby I’ ll Change” the title track and stunning standout of the new EP. Its t itle and lyrics were inspired by a phrase the deceased Boston hardcore leg end Jimmy Flynn (no relation to Patrick Flynn) would say\, always half-jok ing and half-wishing. “In my life\, I’ve been surrounded by addiction\ , and a lot of hopeful people making big promises and seeing other version s of themselves\,” explains Flynn. “That\, to me\, is the greatest hea rtache of my life. The band sprung up in New York’s legendary Hud son Valley\, set in the middle of a thick American musical heritage. To th eir inland West was the Ashokan reservoir folk tradition\, and across the river to the East the legacy of Pete Seeger and the Clearwater. Just north of them was Woodstock and Big Pink\, and all the treasured inheritance of Bob Dylan and the Band. Just south was Tony Falco’s famed venue the Fal con\, a refuge and respite for some of the most venerable jazz legends lik e Sonny Rollins or Joe Lovano. From the first\, Upstate drew liberally fro m everything each corner had to offer. \n\n\n\nWith their first record\, A Remedy\, they were known for three-part female vocal arrangements recalli ng “not only the serpentine sibling harmonies of the Roches\, but of the Andrews and Boswell sisters.” They were otherwise known for an eclectic arrangement of instruments weaving together upright bass\, mandolin\, caj on and baritone saxophone. By their second record Healing\, they were like ned to Lake Street Dive and “Manhattan Transfer meets Loretta Lynn.” F or their third\, You Only Get a Few\, they drew comparisons to the sound o f Laurel Canyon\, another American musical landmark on the other side of t he continent. This time they had shed the eclectic instrumentation in favo r of traditional drums and guitars. \n\n\n\nAfter 15 years\, three records \, nearly a dozen former members\, and one name change\, Upstate could alm ost seem unrecognizable were it not for the constancy of their songs.
