DESCRIPTION:Humans Are Living Histories \nVenus Bayat | 2022–2026 \nWe c
arry the past in our bodies\, memories\, and images. In this project\, I u
se photography to bring different moments of time into the same visual spa
ce. By combining archival photographs with contemporary images\, I create
encounters between people who lived in different times and places. \nThese
photographs are not intended to reconstruct history exactly as it was. In
stead\, they explore how traces of the past continue to shape the present.
A face\, a posture\, or a familiar emotion can connect people across gene
rations\, revealing history as something lived rather than distant. \nThro
ughout this project\, I am particularly interested in personal archives an
d family photographs as sites of memory. Many of these images have survive
d because they were preserved\, protected\, and passed down through genera
tions. In many families\, this work of remembering has traditionally been
carried out by women\, whose contributions often remain absent from offici
al historical narratives. \nBy layering photographs from different periods
\, I explore history not as a linear sequence of events\, but as an ongoin
g presence that continues to exist within everyday life. Although human be
havior\, lifestyles\, and technologies change over time\, experiences such
  as love\, loss\, belonging\, displacement\, care\, and memory remain deep
ly recognizable. \nThrough these visual encounters between past and presen
t\, I examine how individuals\, particularly women\, participate in the pr
eservation\, transmission\, and reinterpretation of history. In this sense
\, history is not only behind us. It lives within us. \nHumans are living
 histories.

DESCRIPTION:This talk shares practical lessons from eight years of securin

awing on experience building cybersecurity programs and embedding them int
o engineering workflows\, it focuses on what works: mastering basic softwa
re security practices\, relying on OEM and Tier 1 partners for traditional
automotive supply chain management\, reusing proven automotive and cloud
security mechanisms\, keeping cybersecurity teams focused on cyber risks\,
and shaping standards and regulations. The core message is to focus limit
ed resources on autonomy-specific security challenges while avoiding unnec
essary reinvention. The talk will close with a brief introduction to Expon

DESCRIPTION:Creating high-fidelity digital twins has traditionally been co
stly and time consuming. A new class of volumetric modeling techniques is
changing this paradigm by enabling the creation of photorealistic visual m
odels and geometrically accurate 3D meshes from real-world data. In this w
ebcast\, we will explore one emerging approach—3D Gaussian Splatting (3D
GS)—and discuss how organizations can leverage these models for applicat
 ions such as simulation\, training\, visualization\, autonomous systems\,
and digital engineering.\n\nWhat Will Attendees Learn\n - how contemporary
approaches are enabling faster\, more scalable creation of digital twins\
n - the fundamentals of 3D Gaussian Splatting and practical considerations
for using the technology\n - how organizations can apply 3DGS-based model
s to support mission\, engineering\, and operational needs\nWho Should Att
end?\n - Researchers and engineers working in computer vision\, AI\, simul
ation\, and digital engineering\n - Digital transformation leaders interes
ted in applying digital twin technologies\n - Program managers and decisio
n-makers evaluating new approaches for modeling real-world environments\nR

DESCRIPTION:When people converse\, much of the meaning conveyed is left un
stated\, with interlocutors recovering it through their common ground: mut
ual knowledge\, beliefs\, and suppositions. To be effective cooperative pa
rtners\, AI systems need to socially ground their outputs in the same way
humans do. This requires two capabilities: cultural intelligence that draw
s on the communal common ground of a community and interactional intellige
nce that builds personal common ground within an interaction. Current AI s
ystems struggle with both: they have caused harm by being culturally insen
sitive\, and by being overly sycophantic or literal. In this thesis\, we w
ork towards socially grounded AI by measuring and improving cultural and i
nteractional intelligence.\n\nIn Part I\, we focus on cultural intelligenc
 e. Since social conventions and user preferences vary globally\, AI system
s need to appropriately adapt their outputs. We first introduce NormAd\, a
framework that measures not cultural knowledge but whether models can app
ly it. Then\, since cultural meaning is often conveyed nonverbally\, we mo
ve beyond text to multimodal settings with MC-Signs\, a dataset of cultura
lly offensive gestures\, and NormViz\, a benchmark and training paradigm f
or culturally grounding visual social dynamics. We find that grounding is
necessary but not sufficient: even a well-grounded response may be deliver
ed in ways users find unhelpful or stereotypical. Therefore\, we propose a
participant study examining when and how users prefer culturally adapted
responses.\n\nIn Part II\, we focus on interactional intelligence. Since u
sers rarely state their goals explicitly\, AI systems need to act on what
they mean rather than what they say. We first evaluate whether models can
appropriately respond to non-literal utterances rather than merely detect
the intent behind them. Then\, we move to everyday assistance settings\, w
here this gap surfaces more subtly when users tunnel vision on solutions t
hat do not address their actual problem. We introduce XYBench\, a benchmar
k of queries with misconceptions\, and measure whether models redirect use
rs toward the actual goal. We find that responding pragmatically does not
emerge from intent recognition alone\, motivating our proposal to train mo
dels to maintain a representation of the user's underlying goal\, distinct
from their literal request\, to effectively resolve misconceptions in mul
ti-turn settings. Together\, this thesis establishes a path towards AI sys
tems that interact with humans in a way that feels culturally sensitive\,
 safe\, and natural.\n\nThesis Committee\nMaarten Sap (Chair) \nDaniel Frie

DESCRIPTION:The Conversations Every Family is Having – or Avoiding\nLet
’s Talk About It is a parent and teen conversation series created with t
eens\, for teens and the adults who care about them. The series creates sp
ace to talk openly about the questions\, pressures\, and experiences that
young people are navigating today—especially the things that can feel aw
kward\, uncomfortable\, or hard to bring up at home. \nThis isn’t a trad
itional lecture where adults do the talking and teens sit and listen. Teen
s set the agenda and lead the conversation. Before each session\, question
s and topics will be gathered directly from teens through crowdsourcing as
well as from members of Friendship Circle’s teens themselves. These que
stions will help shape the conversation and ensure that the topics being d
iscussed reflect what young people are actually wondering about\, experien
cing\, and talking about. \nEach session will be moderated by members of t
he Teen Leadership Board\, who will bring the questions from their peers d
irectly to community experts. Teens and caregivers will have the opportuni
ty to hear from professionals\, ask questions\, share perspectives\, and l
eave with practical information and tools they can use in their own lives.
\nOur goal is to create a space where teens can ask the questions they ac
tually want answered\, hear honest and relevant information from trusted e
xperts\, and have a voice in conversations that directly affect them. By b
ringing teens\, caregivers\, and community professionals together\, Let’
s Talk About It aims to make difficult conversations feel a little less in
timidating—and a lot more accessible. \nSep23Let’s Talk About It Serie
