DESCRIPTION:Humans Are Living Histories \nVenus Bayat | 2022–2026 \nWe c
arry the past in our bodies\, memories\, and images. In this project\, I u
se photography to bring different moments of time into the same visual spa
ce. By combining archival photographs with contemporary images\, I create
encounters between people who lived in different times and places. \nThese
photographs are not intended to reconstruct history exactly as it was. In
stead\, they explore how traces of the past continue to shape the present.
A face\, a posture\, or a familiar emotion can connect people across gene
rations\, revealing history as something lived rather than distant. \nThro
ughout this project\, I am particularly interested in personal archives an
d family photographs as sites of memory. Many of these images have survive
d because they were preserved\, protected\, and passed down through genera
tions. In many families\, this work of remembering has traditionally been
carried out by women\, whose contributions often remain absent from offici
al historical narratives. \nBy layering photographs from different periods
\, I explore history not as a linear sequence of events\, but as an ongoin
g presence that continues to exist within everyday life. Although human be
havior\, lifestyles\, and technologies change over time\, experiences such
  as love\, loss\, belonging\, displacement\, care\, and memory remain deep
ly recognizable. \nThrough these visual encounters between past and presen
t\, I examine how individuals\, particularly women\, participate in the pr
eservation\, transmission\, and reinterpretation of history. In this sense
\, history is not only behind us. It lives within us. \nHumans are living
 histories.

DESCRIPTION:Studies show that better emotional education in classrooms res
ults in better social-emotional outcomes for children. Yet\, classroom edu
cators provide this emotional education to groups of kids with trauma hist
ories and challenging behaviors\, in classrooms where they often lack fund
ing\, training and resources. Meanwhile\, school personnel are the largest
group of mandated reporters. Not surprisingly\, a significant majority of
classroom staff report job-related stress and burnout.\n\nParticipants wi
ll discuss secondary traumatic stress (“STS”) and its relevance to the

resilience through a personal “compassion satisfaction plan” that prot

DESCRIPTION:Spatial applications\, i.e.\, applications that tie digital in
formation with the physical world\, have improved many of our daily activi
ties\, such as navigation and ride-sharing. This class of applications als
o holds significant promise of enabling new industries such as augmented r
eality and robotics. The development of these applications is enabled by s
patial intelligence systems\, or systems that can provide physically-groun
ded services such as routing\, spatial search\, and localization. Today\,
mapping platforms provided by organizations like Google and Apple serve as
spatial intelligence systems. These maps are centralized and primarily co
ver outdoor spaces. We envision that future spatial applications\, such as
persistent world-scale augmented reality and robotics\, would require det
ailed and precise spatial intelligence across indoor and outdoor spaces. T
he scale of cartography efforts required to survey indoor spaces and their
privacy needs inhibit existing centralized maps from incorporating such s
paces into their platform.\n\nThis thesis proposes the design and implemen
tation of OpenFLAME\, a federated spatial intelligence platform built on t
wo core pillars. First\, it introduces a federated mapping infrastructure
where independent parties can manage and serve their own maps of physical
regions. This unlocks scalability of map management\, isolation\, and priv
acy of maps. This is implemented on top of the existing Domain Name System
(DNS)\, which enables us to leverage its existing infrastructure. Second\
, it explores the development of spatial services\, such as search\, routi
ng\, and localization\, by transforming raw spatial data (e.g.\, images an
d videos) of a space into structured\, queryable maps that support these c
 apabilities.\n\nThesis Committee\nSrinivasan Seshan (Co-Chair)\nAnthony Ro

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Philosophy of Science invites you to our Featur
ed Former Fellow online lecture presented by: \n\n \n\nFeatured Former F
 ellow: Cailin O’Connor\n\n \n\nTuesday\, September 22nd @ 12:00 pm - 1
:30 pm EST\n\n \n\nTitle: Closing the Loop on Social Influence in Science
\n\n \n\nAbstract: \n\nThe prevalence of social influence in science is wi
dely documented. But this influence is not one-sided. Social beliefs and
values shape science\, and at the same time are shaped by scientific find
ings. This mutual influence raises the possibility of dynamical interplay
between science and society. But while this possibility has been mention
ed numerous times in the literature\, there is relatively little work atte
mpting to analyze and outline how this mutual influence might work. This
talk argues that two-way influence between science and society is promiscu
ous\, occurring via a wide range of mechanisms that start with both values
and related cultural background beliefs\, and influence both values and r
elated cultural background beliefs. I’ll discuss three sorts of general
patterns at play—positive feedback\, polarizing feedback\, and amplifica
tion.\n\nThis talk will be available online only:\n\nZoom: https://pitt

DESCRIPTION:Title: Roads Less Traveled Between Electronic Structure Theori
es\n\nAbstract: Wave function theory and density functional theory have lo
ng held their places as key electronic structure strategies due to their r
espective traits of systematic improvability (WFT) and low cost-to-accurac
y ratios (DFT). It is highly plausible that a better understanding of the
relationships between WFT and DFT could lead to important new concepts tha
t benefit both areas. This talk will describe our group’s endeavors to b
ridge the two realms\, particularly by looking into connections between hi
ghly accurate WFT and the quantum potentials of Kohn Sham theory. In parti
cular\, I will introduce novel inverse Kohn-Sham approaches that convert f
ull configuration interaction wavefunctions into relevant DFT quantities.
Extensions of these ideas to time-dependent CI and KS theories will be des
cribed\, time permitting. Prospects for new density functional approximati
ons will be discussed\, including an example of a data-driven machine lear
ning DFT model built upon inverse data.\n\nSee more of Dr. Zimmerman's res

DESCRIPTION:The increasing ambition of neuroscience and neurotechnology bo
th supplies and demands vast new quantities of neural data\, creating a ne
ed for methods that can operate effectively at scale. This thesis examines
how deep learning can meet that need for intracortical brain-computer int
erfaces\, which aim to restore movement and sensation to people with impai
red sensorimotor function. We develop models that learn across recording s
 essions\, individuals\, and tasks\, establish a benchmark for consistent n
eural decoding\, and evaluate the benefits and limitations of large-scale
pretraining. These studies demonstrate the promise of shared neural data m
odels while identifying obstacles to translating scale into improved perfo
rmance. We also develop a method to recover neural activity obscured by el
ectrical stimulation artifacts\, expanding access to the signals needed to
study and control sensory interfaces. Together\, this work provides tools
and an empirical foundation for building neural interfaces that can accom
modate the texture and scale of everyday use.\n\nThesis Committee\nRobert

Can you leave your family behind? Can you slam the door\, walk down the st
airs\, and decide never to see them again? Can you ever escape the grip of
your origins? \nOne of Italy’s most notable contemporary novelists\, An
drea Bajani\, faces these questions head-on in his Strega Prize–winning
novel\, L’anniversario (The Anniversary). This September\, Andrea and Ci
ty of Asylum Advisory Board member Anderson Tepper dive into this subtle y
et heartrending portrait of an abusive marriage in patriarchal Italy and a
son’s liberating decision to cut contact with his parents. \n“[L’an
niversario is] a book that confronts the purity of fact\, the tyranny of m
emory\, and the totalitarianism of family like no other.” —Jhumpa Lahi
ri \nCelebrating one decade since he last saw his parents\, a son reflects
upon the family dynamic he escaped 10 years prior. With time and space\,
he finally feels able to tell their story. The Anniversary is his eloquent
account of a family devastated by a father’s violence and the woman who
silently accepts him\; of an airless relationship\, unsettled only by the
  ringing of a telephone\, a visiting classmate\, or a friend soon pushed a
way. It is the story of a son possessed by the irrepressible desire to be
free: to be himself\, to live his own life\, to open up to others without
fear of reprisals. The Anniversary is a reminder of both the power of step
ping away from toxic cycles\, and of the fallout that can stick with us wh
en we do.  \nThis program will be followed by a public reception with com
plimentary hors d’oeuvres and drinks for all artists and attendees. \nAb
out the Author: \nAndrea Bajani was born in Rome in 1975. He is the author
of many award-winning novels\, including If You Kept a Record of Sins and
The Book of Homes. The Anniversary received Italy’s highest literary aw
ard\, the Strega Prize\, in 2025 and will be published in more than twenty
-five countries. Bajani is currently a writer in residence at Rice Univers
ity in Houston\, Texas. \nAbout the Moderator: \nAnderson Tepper is a gues
t curator of PEN America’s World Voices Festival and a longstanding memb
er of the Brooklyn Book Festival’s Literary Council and international co
mmittee. Formerly of Vanity Fair\, his writing on books and authors has ap
peared in The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Times\, The Atlantic\, and
World Literature Today\, among other publications. Anderson also serves on
  City of Asylum’s Advisory Board. \nAbout Your Visit:  \nThe in-house r

DESCRIPTION:A regularly occurring event for players in Blood on the Clockt
 ower Discord: https://discord.gg/pCBuYpFCqH (#botc-general and #botc-sched
uling) \n  \nPlease feel free to drop in and see if there are open slots!
No sign up necessary. \n\n\n\n\nBlood On the Clocktower Website\n\nIn the
quiet village of Ravenswood Bluff\, ‌a demon walks amongst you… \nDur
ing a hellish thunderstorm\, on the stroke of midnight\, there echoes a bo
ne-chilling scream. The townsfolk rush to investigate and find the town st
oryteller murdered\, their body impaled on the hands of the clocktower\, b
lood dripping onto the cobblestones below. A Demon is on the loose\, murde
ring by night and disguised in human form by day. Some have scraps of info
rmation. Others have abilities that fight the evil or protect the innocent
. But the Demon and its evil minions are spreading lies to confuse and bre
ed suspicion. Will the good townsfolk put the puzzle together in time to e
xecute the true demon and save themselves? Or will evil overrun this once
peaceful village? \n  \nBlood on the Clocktower is a bluffing game enjoye
d by 5 to 20 players on opposing teams of Good and Evil\, overseen by a St
oryteller player who conducts the action and makes crucial decisions. The
goal of the game is to successfully deduce and execute the demons before t
hey outnumber the townfolk. \nDuring a ‘day’ phase players socialize o
penly and whisper privately to trade knowledge or spread lies\, culminatin
g in a player’s execution if a majority suspects them of being Evil. Of
a ‘night’ time\, players close their eyes and are woken one at a time
by the Storyteller to gather information\, spread mischief\, or kill. \nTh
e Storyteller uses the game’s intricate playing pieces to guide each gam
e\, leaving others free to play without a table or board. Players stay in
the thick of the action to the very end even if their characters are kille
d\, haunting Ravenswood Bluff as ghosts trying to win from beyond the grav
 e. \nIf you arrive late to a game\, you can enter after it’s started as
a powerful Traveller character with unusual talents and questionable alleg
iances. Each character comes with their own special ability and no two pla
yers in a game are ever the same character.

DESCRIPTION:3670 is a group text code for a meet-up of a special club of f
riends. For Cheol-jun\, a young North Korean defector building a life in S
eoul\, it becomes the address of a self he has never been able to show in
public. By day he works part-time at a convenience store\, crams for the c
ollege entrance exam\, and depends on the fellow defectors who have taken
him in. But there is a secret he cannot let even his closest friends know:
he is gay. After a chance encounter with another gay man\, he is pulled i
nto Seoul’s queer social world: new friends and the messy thrill of want
ing someone who may want someone else. Park Joon-ho’s debut keeps the me
lodrama low and moves with Cheol-jun’s emotional weather\, as he experie
nces the cruelties and beauty of friendship.
