DESCRIPTION:Studies show that better emotional education in classrooms res
ults in better social-emotional outcomes for children. Yet\, classroom edu
cators provide this emotional education to groups of kids with trauma hist
ories and challenging behaviors\, in classrooms where they often lack fund
ing\, training and resources. Meanwhile\, school personnel are the largest
group of mandated reporters. Not surprisingly\, a significant majority of
classroom staff report job-related stress and burnout.\n\nParticipants wi
ll discuss secondary traumatic stress (“STS”) and its relevance to the
se trends. We will define STS and two related problems\, compassion fatigu
e and burnout. Then we will consider symptoms of these and how to develop
resilience through a personal “compassion satisfaction plan” that prot
ects their well-being and effectiveness in these settings.\n\n\n\nClick on

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Philosophy of Science invites you to our Featur

 ellow: Cailin O’Connor\n\n \n\nTuesday\, September 22nd @ 12:00 pm - 1
:30 pm EST\n\n \n\nTitle: Closing the Loop on Social Influence in Science
\n\n \n\nAbstract: \n\nThe prevalence of social influence in science is wi
dely documented. But this influence is not one-sided. Social beliefs and
values shape science\, and at the same time are shaped by scientific find
ings. This mutual influence raises the possibility of dynamical interplay
between science and society. But while this possibility has been mention
ed numerous times in the literature\, there is relatively little work atte
mpting to analyze and outline how this mutual influence might work. This
talk argues that two-way influence between science and society is promiscu
ous\, occurring via a wide range of mechanisms that start with both values
and related cultural background beliefs\, and influence both values and r
elated cultural background beliefs. I’ll discuss three sorts of general
patterns at play—positive feedback\, polarizing feedback\, and amplifica
tion.\n\nThis talk will be available online only:\n\nZoom: https://pitt

DESCRIPTION:Title: Roads Less Traveled Between Electronic Structure Theori
es\n\nAbstract: Wave function theory and density functional theory have lo
ng held their places as key electronic structure strategies due to their r
espective traits of systematic improvability (WFT) and low cost-to-accurac
y ratios (DFT). It is highly plausible that a better understanding of the
relationships between WFT and DFT could lead to important new concepts tha
t benefit both areas. This talk will describe our group’s endeavors to b
ridge the two realms\, particularly by looking into connections between hi
ghly accurate WFT and the quantum potentials of Kohn Sham theory. In parti
cular\, I will introduce novel inverse Kohn-Sham approaches that convert f
ull configuration interaction wavefunctions into relevant DFT quantities.
Extensions of these ideas to time-dependent CI and KS theories will be des
cribed\, time permitting. Prospects for new density functional approximati
ons will be discussed\, including an example of a data-driven machine lear
ning DFT model built upon inverse data.\n\nSee more of Dr. Zimmerman's res
 earch on his website: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/zimmerman-lab/

Free Ride\, or you can buy used bicycles and parts.  Designated Volunte
er Staffers are on-hand if you have questions about how to do a repair –
but Free Ride is a ‘Do It Yourself’ Shop.  Our goal is to let people
get comfortable repairing bikes\, experimenting with new tools and helpin

‘take tools out of hands’ or give unsolicited repair advice. If you en
joy helping people with bikes and bike-repair questions – and would like
to do this during Open Shop – please consider becoming a Free Ride ‘S
taffer’.  We are always looking for new volunteers. There is a $5 fee to
use the shop for repairs – waived if you have an Access Card\, also pay
