DESCRIPTION:Humans Are Living Histories \nVenus Bayat | 2022–2026 \nWe c
arry the past in our bodies\, memories\, and images. In this project\, I u
se photography to bring different moments of time into the same visual spa
ce. By combining archival photographs with contemporary images\, I create
encounters between people who lived in different times and places. \nThese
photographs are not intended to reconstruct history exactly as it was. In
stead\, they explore how traces of the past continue to shape the present.
A face\, a posture\, or a familiar emotion can connect people across gene
rations\, revealing history as something lived rather than distant. \nThro
ughout this project\, I am particularly interested in personal archives an
d family photographs as sites of memory. Many of these images have survive
d because they were preserved\, protected\, and passed down through genera
tions. In many families\, this work of remembering has traditionally been
carried out by women\, whose contributions often remain absent from offici
al historical narratives. \nBy layering photographs from different periods
\, I explore history not as a linear sequence of events\, but as an ongoin
g presence that continues to exist within everyday life. Although human be
havior\, lifestyles\, and technologies change over time\, experiences such
  as love\, loss\, belonging\, displacement\, care\, and memory remain deep
ly recognizable. \nThrough these visual encounters between past and presen
t\, I examine how individuals\, particularly women\, participate in the pr
eservation\, transmission\, and reinterpretation of history. In this sense
\, history is not only behind us. It lives within us. \nHumans are living
 histories.

DESCRIPTION:In 1953\, while a patient at Goldwater Memorial Hospital on We
lfare Island\, the Afro-Puerto Rican Spanish language poet and journalist\
, Julia de Burgos (1914-1953) composed two poems in English. Romero’s pr
oject builds from the poet’s insistence\, at the end of her life\, on th
is place - a repetition\, an imperative “it has to be from here.” What
can the archives of Black nurses working on this NY island\, their letter
s\, as graphic artifacts\, tell us about the changing conditions of moving
with and through hospital design - angles of light and ventilation\, wate
r vistas\, amid an emplotted anti-Black world? Goldwater Memorial Hospital
was designed by Isadore Rosenfeld (1894-1980)\, a hospital architect and
consultant who designed many of the hospitals in Puerto Rico\, public heal
th sites integral to coloniality’s logics of mass sterilization and the
industrial conversion of life to cheap extracted labor. In this talk Romer
o scaffolds planning documents and\ndrawings with the archives and imagina
tions of artists like Ilya Bolotowsky (1907-1981)\, who was\, as seen in t
he image above\, making a rare site specific WPA abstract mural work\, or
perhaps repair\, the plots of public health.\n\nAbout the speaker: Dr. Mer

DESCRIPTION:From Occupation to Integration explores how French ideas about
civilization and the civilizing process shaped the practice of occupation
in the French \nZone and the early stages of European integration. \nThe
French Zone was set apart from the other Allied zones by the occupiers’
belief that Nazi “barbarism” was deeply rooted in German culture and h
istory.\n\nIn this engaging study\, Drew Flanagan deftly details and analy
zes the entanglement between the Europeanization of the French Zone and de
colonization in France’s empire\, prompting readers to consider the cont

Europe and the European Union.\n\nDiscussants: \nGregor Thum\, Department

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the first Film and Media Studies Colloquium
event of the fall season. Our program's series explores a wide variety of
topics related to film and media research\, production\, and teaching. Th
is event will feature two talks: \n\n \n\n"Researching the Film Culture of
Colonial Korea through Star Studies" led by Andy Lee\, PhD candidate\, Fi
lm & Media Studies in the English Department.\n\nThis talk introduces my c
urrent dissertation project\, which reexamines the film history of colonia
l Korea through the concepts and methods of star studies. Despite only a d
ozen of the roughly 200 features made under Japanese rule surviving\, film
scholarship on colonial Korea has grown and expanded in recent decades\,
rebuilt through newspapers\, magazines\, and government records\, and many
works that came out mostly focus on policy\, industry\, and representatio
 n. Studying film stars helps us see another aspect of colonial film cultur
e in relation to the competing meanings layered on stars and the societal
contradictions they embodied\, such as gender\, nation\, and colonial mode
rnity. I also survey a brief history of film stars and celebrity culture i
n colonial Korea and close on one case study of Moon Ye-bong (1917-1999)\,
a famous actress during the colonial period who became a renowned star in
postwar North Korea but was disavowed in the South\, further complicating
the fractured nature of the historiography of Korean cinema.\n\n \n\n"Cut
and Paste: Toward a Theory and Practice of Desktop Documentary" led by Ch
arlotte Scurlock\, PhD candidate\, Film & Media Studies in the English Dep
artment.\n\nLife in the 2020s is mediated largely through interactive digi
 tal screens (computers\, smartphones\, tablets\, et cetera)\, occupying in
creasing space in activities associated with labor and leisure\, from the
shift to remote work and education during the COVID-19 pandemic facilitate
d by Zoom Communications to the colloquialization of phrases like doomscro
lling and screentime. In the midst of this screen saturated culture\, film
makers have explored ways of rendering the computer screen as a fertile pl
atform for cinematic experimentation. One such output is the desktop docum
entary\, or non-fictional films that use screen recording technology to tr
eat the computer screen as both "camera lens and a canvas ... seek[ing] bo
th to depict and question the ways we explore the world through the comput
er screen" (Catherine Grant 2015). This talk will introduce my dissertatio
n research\, which theorizes the desktop documentary in relation to two ea
rlier cinematic practices: the long history of experimental found footage
(or collage) filmmaking and the more contemporary scholarly practice of vi
deographic criticism. Combining written scholarship with practice-based re
search in the form of short desktop documentaries\, I reveal the intricaci
es with which contemporary screen-based technologies reshape traditional u
nderstandings of cinema and allow for a deeper understanding of online med
 ia cultures.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the basics of woodturning through the making of variou
s vessel forms\, culminating in a segmented bowl.\n\n\n6-Part Series Works
 hop \nDate: Thursdays\, September 17th – October 22 \nTime: 6pm-9pm \nDe
scription: In this introductory series\, students will explore forming ves
sels on the wood lathe. Beginning with spindle turning\, students will cre
ate a pen and a lidded vessel to understand the basics of lathe mechanics
and tool usage. Over the following weeks\, students will be introduced to
bowl turning and develop their skills\, leading up to the capstone project
: a segmented maple and walnut bowl. Alongside learning the basic processe
s of the lathe\, students will learn how to prepare a segmented bowl blank
\, from cutting the individual segments\, assembling them\, to turning the
bowl. This is a great opportunity for students interested in the lathe to
get an in-depth overview of creating various vessel forms. \nNo woodworki
ng experience is necessary\, though lots of techniques will be covered—s
tudents should expect a fast-paced learning environment! \nThanks to Turne
rs Anonymous for the use of lathes during this workshop. \nTuition: $330 +
$80 materials fee \nMaterials: All materials will be provided. \nLocation
 : Contemporary Craft Timmons Studios (5688 Butler St.\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15
 201) \nCancellations and Refunds: Workshop cancellations are decided three
business days before the start date. If workshops must be cancelled due t
o insufficient enrollment\, the entire class fee will be refunded by check
\, to your credit card\, or Contemporary Craft account for future workshop
 s. \nRefund Policy: Student refund requests must be made at least three bu
siness days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. N
o refunds will be given without three-business days notice. Processing of
refunds takes approximately three weeks. \nIf you require accessibility ac
commodations\, please let us know by calling 412.261.7003 and we are happy
to assist you. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Artist \nFrom Matt Iannacci: “I ha
ve been woodturning for over 10 years\, and doing wood flatwork for more t
 han 7 years. I focus on medium-sized peices (vases\, urns\, etc.\, in wood
turning\, and jewelry boxes and frames in flatwork)\, usually seeking to c
ombine different wood species to provide color and texture in my pieces. I
am also the inventor of the JS3 jig\, which is used to set up for compoun
d-angle cuts necessary for splayed-stave woodturning\, or boxes with leani
ng walls.” \nOutside of woodworking\, Matt is a full-time mechanical eng
ineer\, a dad\, and a saxophone and flute-player in a jazz band in the Nor
 th Hills in Pittsburgh.

including Maynard Ferguson and Orrin Evans’ Captain Black Big Band\, an
d leads his own Pittsburgh-based quartet through a body of work that honor

DESCRIPTION:A wedding in the Pakistani city of Sahiwal should be a time of
celebration\, but this bride and groom are both cursed. Sajawal (Channan
Hanif)\, the husband-to-be\, has a prominent facial birthmark which has le
ft him introverted and suspicious of a world that mocks him\, while his fu
ture wife Zeba (Mamya Shajaffar) has a past filled with dead fiancés. Thi
s heady tonal mash-up from Sarmad Sultan Khoosat takes some wildly unexpec
ted turns\, from black comedy to surrealist horror. Lali is melodrama\, it
is a story of possession\, and is it a mediation on marriage. Throughout\
, the film demonstrates an intoxicating and vividly uninhibited piece of f
 ilmmaking.\n\nOfficial Selection: Berlinale (2026)

include 5-8 people! We will be touring the bar & patio\, the shop (2nd flo
or)\, and the attic (3rd floor). There are a lot of steps\, some of which
are steep\, so wear your walking shoes. \nThe standard tour will include a
