DESCRIPTION:Humans Are Living Histories \nVenus Bayat | 2022–2026 \nWe c
arry the past in our bodies\, memories\, and images. In this project\, I u
se photography to bring different moments of time into the same visual spa
ce. By combining archival photographs with contemporary images\, I create
encounters between people who lived in different times and places. \nThese
photographs are not intended to reconstruct history exactly as it was. In
stead\, they explore how traces of the past continue to shape the present.
A face\, a posture\, or a familiar emotion can connect people across gene
rations\, revealing history as something lived rather than distant. \nThro
ughout this project\, I am particularly interested in personal archives an
d family photographs as sites of memory. Many of these images have survive
d because they were preserved\, protected\, and passed down through genera
tions. In many families\, this work of remembering has traditionally been
carried out by women\, whose contributions often remain absent from offici
al historical narratives. \nBy layering photographs from different periods
\, I explore history not as a linear sequence of events\, but as an ongoin
g presence that continues to exist within everyday life. Although human be
havior\, lifestyles\, and technologies change over time\, experiences such
  as love\, loss\, belonging\, displacement\, care\, and memory remain deep
ly recognizable. \nThrough these visual encounters between past and presen
t\, I examine how individuals\, particularly women\, participate in the pr
eservation\, transmission\, and reinterpretation of history. In this sense
\, history is not only behind us. It lives within us. \nHumans are living
 histories.

DESCRIPTION:The NSF AI Institute for Societal Decision Making: \nhttps://w
ww.cmu.edu/ai-sdm/index.html (NSF AI-SDM) sponsors the participation of se
lected speakers and students in an annual workshop of Human-AI Complementa
rity for Decision Making. Human-AI Complementarity\, defined as the condit
ion in which Humans + AI working together results in better decisions than
humans or AI working alone\, is a broad goal pursued in several projects
of the NSF AI-SDM.\n\nThe interdisciplinary workshop will focus on designi
ng and deploying AI systems that are dynamically aligned with human values
\, robust to unexpected behaviors\, and safe even under failure conditions
. Key topics will include the role of AI agents in influencing human decis
 ion confidence and calibration\, AI’s impact on trust\, coordination\, a
nd collaboration in decision-making\, and addressing undesirable AI behavi
ors.\n\nParticipants from diverse fields such as decision science\, cognit
ive science\, computer science\, and machine learning will engage actively
through tutorials\, interactive poster sessions\, presentations\, and col
laborative “AIdea” generation to identify pressing research challenges
and propose concrete solutions for achieving complementarity in flexible
Human-AI teams. The goal is to advance the state of the art in human-AI in
teraction for the benefit of society.\n\nThe goals of the workshop are:\n
 - To deliver state of the art instruction on desirable ideas to achieve dy
namic and complementary human-AI alignment\n - To generate common knowledg

DESCRIPTION:AI assistants increasingly help people make decisions. Providi
ng useful assistance in these settings requires more than responding to an
explicit request: an assistant must determine what information about the
user and the surrounding situation is relevant to the task. Yet this infor
mation is not always fully specified before assistance begins. Preferences
can become observable only after a user reacts to an assistant’s behavi
or\, while socially situated actions can depend on other people and on an
interaction that changes over time.\n\n\nIn this dissertation\, I study co
ntext-aware AI assistance across three complementary aims. First\, I inves
tigate how AI assistants can learn individual preferences that emerge thro
ugh ongoing human-AI interaction. Using human-agent collaborative trajecto
ries\, I show that users’ interventions provide systematic signals about
how they prefer to collaborate with AI and that these signals can improve
adaptive assistance. Second\, I examine what changes when AI-assisted act
ions become part of interactions with other people. Through a preregistere
d experiment on AI-mediated group communication\, I show that incorporatin
g relational context can produce different conversational and group-level
outcomes than assistance focused only on the individual user. Third\, I pr
opose an interactive AI assistant that learns and updates both individual
and relational context as interaction unfolds\, using these evolving repre
sentations to provide context-sensitive assistance while preserving the us
er’s intended meaning.\n\nThis thesis advances a more specific view of c
ontext-aware AI assistance: context for AI assistance is not necessarily g
iven in advance\; it can emerge through interaction\, and when assisted ac
tions become socially coupled\, the relevant context can extend beyond the
  focal user.\n\nThesis Committee\nHirokazu Shirado (Chair)\nAniket Kittur\

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Humanities Center and featuring faculty fellow\,
Sean Morrissey.\n\nStaged Interiors and the Fragmented Dream Home examine
s how custom home building design and real estate imagery shape ideas of b
elonging\, self-definition\, and success. Drawing from personal and public
archives\, the project moves through printmaking\, artist publications\,
and modular installations to reconsider model-home aesthetics as visual sy
stems of conformity. Rather than treating the dream home as a stable ideal
\, the work breaks it apart through image constellations and fixed typolog
ies that expose its reliance on repetition and prefabricated choice. These
fragments become works on and of paper along with possible participatory
forms that circulate beyond conventional display. In doing so\, the projec
t proposes counter-structures for living\, where domestic space becomes op
en to critique and alternative possibilities.\n\nRespondents include Hebah
Uddin from English + Triton Mobley\, Assistant Professor of Computational
Art Practices + Expanded Cinema\, Departments of Studio Arts + Film & Med
ia Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. This event will be hybrid\, so
you can attend it either in person in 602 CL or via Zoom as you prefer. P

DESCRIPTION:Title: New Reactivity to Solve Chemical Challenges\n\nAbstract
: Our research program centers on unlocking static molecular compartments\
, regions of molecular structure whose reactivity\, conformation\, or elec
tronic character that may be inaccessible for various reasons. We develop
new reactions that open these compartments and deploy the resulting chemic
al space toward functional materials and therapeutics. Through pyrrole rea
rrangements we generate amino donor–acceptor Stenhouse adducts and relat
ed species that unlock selective A→B switching\, record photoluminescenc
 e\, switchable single-molecule conductance\, and visible-light-responsive
cellular imaging. The same chemistry uniquely produces Stenhouse zwitterio
ns that function as hydrogen-bond acceptors rather than the donors charact
eristic of all prior Stenhouse systems. In parallel\, iron-catalyzed cross
-electrophile couplings of C(sp3) electrophiles with soft reagents enable
efficient construction of congested C–heteroatom bonds without exogenous
reductants\, acids\, or bases. These platforms converge on amino-acid-der
ived androgen receptor modulators\, where iron catalysis installs side-cha
in functionality while the compartment-unlocking philosophy guides heteroa
tom versatility into the molecular backbone. Ongoing work focuses on refin
ing various aspects of photoswitch performance\, advancing light-gated too
ls\, expanding rearrangement chemistry\, and developing stereoselective ir
on catalysis.\n\nSee more of Dr. Picazo's research on his website: https:/
/www.picazolab.com/\n\nBiosketch: Elias Picazo earned his B.S. in chemistr
y and mathematics at the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, where
he conducted undergraduate research with Armen Zakarian on stereoselective
trifluoromethylation methodology. As an NIH F31 fellow\, Elias then pursu
ed doctoral studies with Neil Garg at UCLA\, where he developed new reacti
ons and completed the first total syntheses of several complex akuammiline
alkaloids since their isolation in the 1800s. As an NIH K99/R00 postdocto
ral fellow with Eric Jacobsen at Harvard\, he advanced hydrogen-bond-donor
organocatalysis for stereoselective transformations. This training in tar
get-oriented synthesis of complex bioactive molecules and fundamental reac
tivity-driven reaction development uniquely positions him to identify long
-standing static molecular features and invent the chemistry required to u
nlock them. At the University of Southern California\, the Picazo group is
guided by the philosophy of unlocking static molecular compartments. The
laboratory develops aromaticity-breaking pyrrole rearrangements that gener
ate new classes of nitrogen-containing photoswitches\, iron-catalyzed meth
ods for constructing congested carbon–heteroatom bonds\, and modular ami
no-acid-derived androgen receptor modulators for several indications.\n\nH

DESCRIPTION:From Pitt to the Red Planet: A Robotic Journey to Mars\n\n\n\n
Presented by Dr. Bob Anderson | NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, Californi
 a Institute of Technology\n\nGES Distinguished Alumnus\, 2026\n\nWe are pr
oud to announce that Dr. Anderson is this year's Distinguished Alumni hono
ree\, recognizing his nearly three-decade career of pioneering contributio
ns to Mars exploration at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and his continu
ed leadership at the forefront of planetary science.\n\nTalk Abstract:\n\n
NASA's Curiosity Mars rover has been exploring the surface of Gale Crater
for over ten years. To date\, Curiosity has collected more than 855\,000 i
mages from its various cameras and 36 powderized rock samples with the dri
ll on the end of its robotic arm. In addition\, after 10 years\, the rover
has now driven up over 2\,000 vertical feet on the mountain. With all thi
s data\, what have we learned from ten years of exploration on the Martian
surface? In this presentation\, we will highlight what Curiosity has foun
d in Gale Crater to determine whether Mars was capable of supporting life.
\n\nBiography: \n\nDr. Anderson is a Research Scientist at NASA's Jet Pro
pulsion Laboratory\, where he serves as Investigation Scientist for the Ma
rs Science Laboratory's Sample Acquisition\, Sample Processing and Handlin
g System and as Principal Investigator of SPARTA\, a geomechanical/geochem
ical instrument for characterizing planetary regolith. He holds a Ph.D. in
Geology from the University of Pittsburgh and has spent over three decade
s studying Mars's tectonic evolution and regolith mechanics. He was electe
d a Fellow of the Geological Society of America in 2018 and serves on the
ISRM Commission on Planetary Rock Mechanics\, with over 100 publications t
 o his name.

DESCRIPTION:The McEliece code-based cryptosystem\, utilizing binary Goppa
codes\, is the earliest public-key encryption scheme that is still conside
 red post-quantum secure. \n\n\nIn this talk\, I will present a simple\, cl
assical quasipolynomial-time distinguisher for Goppa-McEliece in the asymp
totic “Classic McEliece” regime: for code length 𝑛\, extension degr
 ee 𝑚 =Θ⁡(log⁡𝑛)\, Goppa degree 𝑡 =Θ⁡(𝑛 / log⁡𝑛)\,
and public-code dimension 𝑘 =Θ⁡(𝑛)\, the algorithm runs in time
𝑛𝑂⁡(log⁡𝑛) and distinguishes the McEliece public key from the
uniform distribution. The distinguisher is not merely asymptotic: it appl
ies to all Classic McEliece parameter sets considered in the NIST process
and yields improved\, though not yet practical\, concrete attack estimates
. \n\n\nI will also briefly discuss extensions of this provable algorithm
 to a heuristic 𝑛𝑂⁡(log⁡𝑛)-time ciphertext-decryption attack t
hat recovers the message from a noisy codeword and a heuristic 𝑛𝑂⁡
(log⁡𝑛)-time key-recovery attack that outputs an equivalent decryptio
n key. While the decryption attack is not concretely efficient\, the key-r
ecovery attack is much closer to the distinguisher and may be relevant to
NIST security levels.\n\nPresented as part of the Crypto Seminar Series: \

working with all forms of metal\, with a particular affinity for steel and
copper. Her practice is rooted in experimentation\, hands-on making\, and
discovering new possibilities within the material. She has a special inte
rest in reclaimed steel and recycled materials\, giving new life to materi
als through transformation and reuse. In her current explorations\, Daniel
le is experimenting with enameling steel\, exploring the interplay of colo
r\, surface\, texture\, and form. As an educator\, she encourages curiosit
y\, experimentation\, and a willingness to push the material in unexpected
  directions.

to the bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau\, a character portrayed by act
or Peter Sellers (1925-1980) in five popular comedy films.\n\nMalcolm and
Phil also operate a farm in southwestern France.
