DESCRIPTION:Distribution shift\, i.e. a change in the distribution of inpu
t/output data between training and test time\, remains an enduring challen
ge in modern ML. In practice\, methods to improve robustness of ML models
to distribution shift are frequently heuristic and require considerable si
de information about the shifted (target) test distribution to be effectiv
 e. In theory\, fundamental questions like why ML models are initially brit
tle to distribution shifts\, how to best mitigate this brittleness\, and h
ow much target data is required for this mitigation remain open.\n\nIn thi
s talk\, we put distributional robustness under the microscope by studying
the “group robustness” setting - where data is comprised of majority
and minority groups whose relative proportions shift between training and
test time. We present two case studies:\n\n - On the empirical side\, we s
how that simply retraining the last layer of state-of-the-art neural netwo
rks on a class-balanced held-out set is surprisingly effective - even if t
he held-out set remains sizably group-imbalanced - on well-established gro
up robustness benchmarks. We also present a data-driven\, active learning-
inspired methodology to select and upweight minority group examples which
achieves comparable group robustness on these same benchmarks to state-of-
the-art methods that do require group labels. \n - On the theoretical side
\, we provide the first end-to-end analysis showing that shallow neural ne
tworks learn a simpler spurious correlation and suppress the true (core) p
redictor. We consider the core predictor to be the nonlinear XOR function
while the spurious correlation is linear. Our analysis and techniques reve
al a striking phase transition between the situations of “extreme” cor
relation and “moderate” correlation\, and could explain the success of
existing robustness-advancing methods as well as inspire new ones.\nThis
is joint work with Tyler LaBonte\, John C. Hill\, Xinchen Zhang and Abhish
 ek Kumar.\n\n—\n\nVidya Muthukumar: \nhttps://vmuthukumar.ece.gatech.edu

tistical learning. She is particularly interested in designing learning al
gorithms that provably adapt in strategic environments\, fundamental prope

DESCRIPTION:The increasing ambition of neuroscience and neurotechnology bo
th supplies and demands vast new quantities of neural data\, creating a ne
ed for methods that can operate effectively at scale. This thesis examines
how deep learning can meet that need for intracortical brain-computer int
erfaces\, which aim to restore movement and sensation to people with impai
red sensorimotor function. We develop models that learn across recording s
 essions\, individuals\, and tasks\, establish a benchmark for consistent n
eural decoding\, and evaluate the benefits and limitations of large-scale
pretraining. These studies demonstrate the promise of shared neural data m
odels while identifying obstacles to translating scale into improved perfo
rmance. We also develop a method to recover neural activity obscured by el
ectrical stimulation artifacts\, expanding access to the signals needed to
study and control sensory interfaces. Together\, this work provides tools
and an empirical foundation for building neural interfaces that can accom
modate the texture and scale of everyday use.\n\nThesis Committee\nRobert

DESCRIPTION:Creating high-fidelity digital twins has traditionally been co
stly and time consuming. A new class of volumetric modeling techniques is
changing this paradigm by enabling the creation of photorealistic visual m
odels and geometrically accurate 3D meshes from real-world data. In this w
ebcast\, we will explore one emerging approach—3D Gaussian Splatting (3D
GS)—and discuss how organizations can leverage these models for applicat
 ions such as simulation\, training\, visualization\, autonomous systems\,
and digital engineering.\n\nWhat Will Attendees Learn\n - how contemporary
approaches are enabling faster\, more scalable creation of digital twins\
n - the fundamentals of 3D Gaussian Splatting and practical considerations
for using the technology\n - how organizations can apply 3DGS-based model
s to support mission\, engineering\, and operational needs\nWho Should Att
end?\n - Researchers and engineers working in computer vision\, AI\, simul
ation\, and digital engineering\n - Digital transformation leaders interes
ted in applying digital twin technologies\n - Program managers and decisio
n-makers evaluating new approaches for modeling real-world environments\nR
