DESCRIPTION:Humans Are Living Histories \nVenus Bayat | 2022–2026 \nWe c
arry the past in our bodies\, memories\, and images. In this project\, I u
se photography to bring different moments of time into the same visual spa
ce. By combining archival photographs with contemporary images\, I create
encounters between people who lived in different times and places. \nThese
photographs are not intended to reconstruct history exactly as it was. In
stead\, they explore how traces of the past continue to shape the present.
A face\, a posture\, or a familiar emotion can connect people across gene
rations\, revealing history as something lived rather than distant. \nThro
ughout this project\, I am particularly interested in personal archives an
d family photographs as sites of memory. Many of these images have survive
d because they were preserved\, protected\, and passed down through genera
tions. In many families\, this work of remembering has traditionally been
carried out by women\, whose contributions often remain absent from offici
al historical narratives. \nBy layering photographs from different periods
\, I explore history not as a linear sequence of events\, but as an ongoin
g presence that continues to exist within everyday life. Although human be
havior\, lifestyles\, and technologies change over time\, experiences such
  as love\, loss\, belonging\, displacement\, care\, and memory remain deep
ly recognizable. \nThrough these visual encounters between past and presen
t\, I examine how individuals\, particularly women\, participate in the pr
eservation\, transmission\, and reinterpretation of history. In this sense
\, history is not only behind us. It lives within us. \nHumans are living
 histories.

DESCRIPTION:We often think that we need a vacation or large blocks of time
in our days to feel refreshed\, but it may just be that we need to learn
how to capture small doses of well-being where we can in each day. Little
“wins” can make a big difference and can be the catalyst to shift our
mood/perspective in a positive direction. \n\nThe goal of these sessions i
s to use the time as a gentle nudge toward helping you explore your own in
terior world through the journal prompt of the day or time to just be stil
l and enjoy the relaxing music. Instead of waiting for the world to stop s
o we can catch up\, let’s slow down on purpose. Make a commitment to sho
w up for yourself\; to begin your day from a more centered place. Because\
 , after all\, mindset matters.\n\n \n\nTestimonials:\n“I was distracted
this morning\, but the music in the background and the deep breaths helped
ease me into the day.” \n\n“I was on vacation for over a week and rea
lly missed the journal prompts. They are great to really put things in per
spective and make you think. Thank you!!"\n\n*Any questions\, please conta

  run on Mondays (10am-2pm) and Wednesdays (1st and 2nd from 12 to 8pm) (3r
d and 4th from 12 to 6pm) at North Way Ministry Hub . These services allow
an entry point into recovery for populations that do not typically have a
ccess or interest in traditional forms of treatment and provide individual
s with a social setting that is substance free where they can connect with
other individuals dealing with the similar issues. In these settings they
can connect with immediate harm reduction resources such as Narcan\, drug
testing kits\, disease screening kits\, and essentials such as first aid
materials\, socks\, and other essentials. They also can hear about all of
the services and programs TRY provides and make the decision to engage at

DESCRIPTION:As AI systems become better at using our data — prompts\, sc
reens\, records\, and entire workflows — a central question emerges: who
keeps control of the data? The most valuable data is also the most regula
ted\, scattered across thousands of hospitals\, banks\, and enterprises th
at cannot legally or practically pool it in plaintext. This talk presents
a research program aimed at a structure in which using data does not mean
surrendering it. I will present results along three complementary threads.
First\, private set computation over encrypted data: fully homomorphic en
cryption protocols that perform exact private set intersection over a bill
ion records distributed across a thousand encrypted silos in about a minut
e\, fuzzy (cosine/Hamming) matching over high-dimensional embeddings up to
three orders of magnitude faster than prior work\, and the first encrypte
d label selection-and-analytics protocol enabling end-to-end encrypted fra
ud and AML analytics across thousands of institutions. \n\nSecond\, minima
l trusted hardware: we show that naively placing a differential-privacy sa
mpler in an SGX enclave lets the host recover over 99% of the noise draws\
, and then design systems in which small\, verified enclaves stay off the
hot path — scaling secure federated-learning aggregation to 50\,000 clie
nts and making Intel TDX confidential VMs continuously and anonymously att
estable at cloud scale. Third\, Web3DB: a decentralized database series in
which only an enclave is trusted\, providing owner-defined row-level acce
ss control\, near-cloud analytics performance\, and serializable transacti
ons over blockchain and IPFS. I will close with a vision that composes the
 se primitives — policy\, computation\, and evidence layers — into a se
cure zero-trust ecosystem for agentic AI. \n\n—\n\nTaeho Jung: \nhttps:/

omputer Science and Engineering and the Dennis O. Doughty Collegiate Profe

and journals. His research focuses on security and privacy\, applied cryp
 tography\, confidential computing\, privacy-preserving data analytics\, an
d trustworthy AI infrastructure. He studies how sensitive data can be secu
rely processed in untrusted cloud and multi-party environments\, with part
icular emphasis on hardware-assisted trusted execution\, secure data colla
boration\, and data governance for emerging AI systems \n\nIn Person and Z

DESCRIPTION:Software engineering practice is filled with myths---beliefs d
 erived from intuition\, experience\, and conventional wisdom---that lack e
mpirical foundations. Many of these myths are causal in nature\, concernin
g the consequences of decisions\, interventions\, and changes to practice.
While empirical software engineering research frequently investigates the
se myths through descriptive\, correlational\, and qualitative evidence\,
it rarely engages with the challenging question of whether the evidence ca
n actually support the causal claims beneath these myths. In this thesis\,
I argue that causal credibility assessments are feasible in empirical sof
tware engineering research through explicit articulations of causal theory
and assumptions. \n\nTo demonstrate this argument\, this thesis starts wi
th an accessible introduction to the modern causal inference toolkit for s
oftware engineering researchers. Then\, across three empirical studies\, I
demonstrate how causal credibility assessments can reveal systematic gaps
between practitioner beliefs and empirical reality. First\, using counter
factual analysis and simulations on npm dependency data\, I challenge the
myth that pinning dependency versions improves project security\, showing
that it paradoxically increases attack exposure unless upstream packages p
in their own dependencies. Second\, through a longitudinal analysis of Git
Hub starring patterns with panel regression models\, I challenge the myth
that fake GitHub stars provide sustainable promotional benefits\, showing
instead that these artificial signals become long-term liabilities. Final
 ly\, using a difference-in-differences design with staggered adoption\, I
challenge the myth that AI coding tools unambiguously improve developer pr
oductivity\, finding that Cursor's initial velocity gains are offset by su
stained accumulation of technical debt. In each study\, I assess the credi
bility of causal claims through the following four-step framework: (1) der
iving an explicit causal theory from software engineering domain knowledge
\, (2) defining the causal estimate of interest and specifying the assumpt
ion under which the estimate carries a causal interpretation\, (3) honestl
y acknowledging and mitigating limitations and known caveats\, and (4) tho
ughtfully navigating alternative explanations. Collectively\, this thesis
provides a methodological blueprint for future empirical software engineer
ing research\, illustrating how to balance rigor with practicality to gene
rate actionable\, trustworthy evidence for software engineering myths.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Robots must often make decisions in scenes containing many obj
ects: they need to identify what is present\, understand where objects are
\, predict how they will interact\, and choose actions accordingly. Learni
ng these capabilities directly from pixels is challenging\, especially whe
n the number and arrangement of objects can change from one scene to anoth
 er.\n\nIn this talk\, I will present Deep Latent Particles (DLP)\, a self-
supervised object-centric representation that describes a visual scene as
a set of compact latent particles. Each particle captures the location and
visual properties of a discovered object or object part\, providing an in
terpretable bridge between raw images and multi-object decision-making.\n\
nI will show how DLP can serve as a representation for learning robotic po
licies from online reinforcement learning\, offline data\, and demonstrati
ons. In particular\, policies built on these representations can generaliz
e compositionally to scenes containing more objects than were present duri
ng training.\n\nI will then introduce Latent Particle World Models (ICLR 2
026 Oral)\, which learn to predict how collections of latent particles evo
lve over time. These object-centric world models support multi-view observ
ations and flexible conditioning\, enabling prediction and decision-making
in rich visual environments. I will discuss how this perspective connects
to diffusion-based policies and world action models (WAMs)\, and conclude
with a look toward self-supervised 3D object-centric learning for robots
that can perceive\, predict\, and act in three-dimensional worlds. and whi
ch will be quietly subsumed by the next scale-up.\n\n—\n\nTal Daniel: ht

ersity’s Robotics Institute\, working with Prof. Deepak Pathak and Prof.
David Held. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering
from the Technion\, advised by Prof. Aviv Tamar. His research spans self-s
upervised and object-centric representation learning\, generative modeling
\, reinforcement learning\, and robotics\, with a focus on learning repres
entations and world models.\n\nThe VASC Seminar is generously sponsored by

DESCRIPTION:Ky Nam Inn\, a romance set in 1980’s Saigon\, explores the f
rustrations of desire when cast against duty\, community\, expectation\, a
nd authoritarianism. Khang wants to prove himself to be a skilled translat
or\, even though he may have gotten his job translating The Little Prince
from nepotism. Meanwhile\, his neighbor Ky Nam caters lunches out of her k
itchen while suffering from judgement because of her deceased husband’s
southern associations. Though the film and its characters are unabashedly
beautiful\, the love story is rooted in literature and language. Their rel
ationship grows because of—and in spite of—how languages cannot close
the gaps between cultures\, classes\, and regions. Shot on luminous 35mm\,
the lyrical film explores what can and cannot be said in a world with dut
ies\, rules\, and expectations. \n\nBest film: Beijing International Film

DESCRIPTION:Do you believe God has uniquely created you with a purpose and
plan? What if you heard God speak and felt the love of Jesus in a profoun
d way? Imagine yourself in a community of people who cared about you\, lis
tened to you and helped you grow. What if you stepped into the Rooted jour
ney and experienced personal transformation? \nRooted is a 10-week small
group experience that will help you connect with God\, the church\, and yo
ur purpose. This experience starts with a workbook with five days of readi
ng and journaling each week. At the end of the week\, you will come togeth
er with your group and discuss what you have learned and read. In addition
\, you’ll grow in prayer and service through dedicated experiences. You
will also learn concrete and easy ways to share your faith. For some peopl
e\, all of this will help you fall in love with Jesus for the first time.
For others\, this may reinvigorate a stale\, dry faith. For everyone else\
, this is a great way to experience Jesus in new and fresh ways. At the en
d of the 10 weeks\, we will gather together as seven campuses in one locat
ion to celebrate what has happened over the weeks in Rooted. \nRegistrati

of the Rooted groups from Dormont will meet at the same time \n •Rooted
begins on Monday September 21st\, 2026.\n •Week 8 will occur on Monday N
ovember 9th\, 2026. \nAfter the 10 weeks are over\, all Rooted groups fro
m all campuses will meet to celebrate everything that God has done. \nThe
Rooted Celebration will be held on Sunday\, December 6th at 5pm.

DESCRIPTION:City Winery Pittsburgh presents The Wellermen live on Monday\,
September 21st at 7:30 PM! The Wellermen first captured global attention
in 2021\, when their viral sea shanty performances helped spark the worldw
ide “Wellerman” phenomenon\, generating billions of views and leading
to appearances at The BRIT Awards and on The Late Show with Stephen Colber
 t. What began as a digital moment has since evolved into a fully realised
transatlantic live band with a devoted global fanbase. They mix the East C
oast folk sensibilities of basses Bobby Waters and Luke Taylor (Boston and
Pennsylvania) with the British musicianship of Jonny Stewart and Seb Payn
e\, and the theatrical energy of Sam Pope\, who starred in the West End. \
