People love to recover obscure\, semi-forgotten musi c scenes from the ’90s\, but there is no appetite for rehabilitating und erground Christian Rock. It remains culturally radioactive. There aren’t any Numero Group reissues coming. \nI retired from the music industry rec ently\, but my 25-year career as a booking agent also informs the novel. R .I.Y.L. is fiction\, but the source material eventually led to my represen tation of world-class artists like Bon Iver\, Vampire Weekend\, the Mounta in Goats\, Dijon\, Songs: Ohia\, Father John Misty\, Haim\, and many more. \nWhen I began work on the book\, I was angry about my youthful enclosure in the Christian Rock culture\, and thought I was doing satire. Eventuall y\, I had to admit that the scene was ridiculous\, but too real for those inside it. I hadn’t metabolized that period of my life\, and what starte d as reportage turned into something closer to release. Instead of writing down to that world\, I wrote from inside the bruise. \nMy post-agent life is about writing and running Little Engines\, an underground small press which publishes a literary magazine of the same name and has recently turn ed its focus to books. First\, he has observed that the times when writing f eels effortless\, when the days slip by in a sustained waking dream\, when he senses he is not the source but the channel\, when he hears the text w hispered in his ear as he writes and wakes in the night with passages full y formed in hi head\, are those when he has but the most tenuous claim to the place where he’s living\, where the bedding is borrowed and the gard en view\, the morning birdsong\, the dusk chorus\, the petrichor that foll ows rain\, the kitchen utensils (save for his Kuhn-Rikon carbon steel y-pe eler\, which accompanies him everywhere\, notwithstanding the overzealous efforts of Berlin airport security)\; when he’s been living out of a kna psack for six months. It is in borrowed places that the world recedes\, an d it is in borrowed places that Berson feels the sense of openness that en courages risk-taking.\n\nSecond\, he has observed that his most gratifying work is that where the writing process itself acquires a quality of dislo cation. Writing\, for Berson\, is like wandering out on a tidal flat at du sk only to find\, as the light goes and the tide returns\, that he’s los t his sense of direction and stepped on something stinging.\n\nThird\, whe n Berson appears ineluctably drawn to borrowed genres. He was trained as a historian\, anthropologist\, and philosopher\; an earlier career in compu ter science continues to inform his habits of thought. He’s held appoint ments in brain imaging labs and design studios\; his second and third book s formulated a program of research you might call critical-interpretive ev olutionary anthropology. But over time\, his work grew increasingly experi mental\, and at length he turned to fiction. His first novel\, Waking Para lysis\, he wrote as a preparation for The Human Scaffold (2021)\; it will appear this year\, and the delay in its publication speaks to the difficul ty of working against genre.\n\nFor this colloquium Berson offers Very Rou gh\, Unrevised early pages from his third novel\, working title Procedure. Procedure is a study\, on the one hand\, in the phenomenology of social d isorder\, on the other in the phenomenology of aging. It grows out of his own experience of congenital monaurality and its unexpected sequelae as he enters his sixth decade\, including normal-tension glaucoma and the possi bility of losing his hearing and vision simultaneously. This y ear’s theme is “German-American Relations: Past\, Present and Future – The Pittsburgh Story.”  \nBuilding on a tradition of collaboration with the embassy for previous “Germany on Campus” series\, the German Department at the University of Pittsburgh presents a “Germany on Campus ” program for the Fall of 2026 which entwines the rich historical German roots of Western Pennsylvania with today’s close ties between our regio n and Germany. Through the regional lens\, they aim to highlight an import ant aspect of our transatlantic relationship: the role close German-Americ an relations have played in generating prosperity for both nations and pea ce. Hence\, the sequence of events is designed to consider how we can buil d on the post-1945 strength of German-American relations to ensure a mutua lly beneficial future. To this end\, the German Department\, in collaborat ion with the Nationality Rooms and Intercultural Programs and the European Studies Center\, will present a total of four events and one exhibit. \nB erlin Babel presents short stories by writers originating from Syria\, Tur key\, China\, the UK\, the US\, the Netherlands\, Spain\, Russia\, Germany \, Italy\, and India. From Arabic to Italian to Yiddish\, the stories are beautifully translated from eight different languages\, capturing life in Berlin with all its despairs and joys while uniting a wide range of perspe ctives. With a background in Asian Studies and Human Geography\, she is a longtime contributor to several major German journals and periodicals\; s he wrote the biweekly column “Poetical Correctness” in taz from 2020-2 023. Her acclaimed autofictional debut novel Wovon wir träumen [What We Dream Of] was published in 2022 and follows the interconnected stories of three generations of women whose lives are ruptured and reunited through the experience of migration and life in the Chinese diaspora. It was follo wed in 2024 by her sophomore novel Das Verschwinden der Welt [The Disappe aring World]\, a novel that chronicles the life of an aging tenement build ing in the outskirts of Shanghai: a one-time refuge for peasants from the Chinese countryside\, it later became home to Jewish refugees during WW2\, and new urban milieu following the Cultural Revolution\, before falling i nto forgetfulness and disrepair with the rapid gentrification of the 21st- century city. A translation of her short story\, “KTV Girl” appeared i n the recent English-language anthology Berlin Babel. \nAbout the Translat or/Moderator: \nJon Cho-Polizzi is an award-winning literary translator an d Assistant Professor of German at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Jon r eceived a concurrent PhD from UC Berkeley in German and Medieval Studies i n 2020. His work highlights the diversity of contemporary German literatur e at the intersections of migration and multilingualism. In Tsing’s seminal interdisciplinary work\ , the journey of the matsutake guides readers through the diverse lifeways of Asian diasporic communities shaped by its trade and consumption. Our h ybrid course engages with ways of living\, creating\, reading\, and writin g inspired by fungal processes\, emphasizing interconnectedness\, transfor mation\, and resilience. The first half of the class\, taught by Dr. Ung\, is a literature in translation survey that hones in on cultural productio ns staging life in a polluted world\, drawing on a mixed-media corpus (nov els\, films\, graphic novels\, art) on questions of animality\, trauma\, d isplacement and migration.
