In this project\, I u se photography to bring different moments of time into the same visual spa ce. By combining archival photographs with contemporary images\, I create encounters between people who lived in different times and places. \nThese photographs are not intended to reconstruct history exactly as it was. In stead\, they explore how traces of the past continue to shape the present. A face\, a posture\, or a familiar emotion can connect people across gene rations\, revealing history as something lived rather than distant. \nThro ughout this project\, I am particularly interested in personal archives an d family photographs as sites of memory. Many of these images have survive d because they were preserved\, protected\, and passed down through genera tions. In many families\, this work of remembering has traditionally been carried out by women\, whose contributions often remain absent from offici al historical narratives. \nBy layering photographs from different periods \, I explore history not as a linear sequence of events\, but as an ongoin g presence that continues to exist within everyday life. Although human be havior\, lifestyles\, and technologies change over time\, experiences such as love\, loss\, belonging\, displacement\, care\, and memory remain deep ly recognizable. \nThrough these visual encounters between past and presen t\, I examine how individuals\, particularly women\, participate in the pr eservation\, transmission\, and reinterpretation of history. With an insti nctive nature towards horror vacui\, her pieces reference memory\, domesti city and the loss of an industry through the re-use of common items from t he aesthetic dustbin of American design. The primary material used for her work is glass cullet sourced from scrap yards supplied by now defunct pre ssed glass factories as well as flea-markets\, antique-stores and donation s of broken antiques from households across the country. \nHer recent dior ama-style pieces tell stories of self-discovery\, escapism and the power o f the feminine by utilizing figurines and animals found in collected antiq ue glass pieces. These figurines become recurring symbols in the evolving narrative and simultaneously pay homage to the history of US glassmaking. \nCowan lives and works in Philadelphia where she received an MFA in Ceram ics/Glass from Tyler School of Art and Architecture of Temple University.
