DESCRIPTION:“Cross Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba\,” brings to
gether the distinct practices of artist William Wegman and professional ho
ckey player turned artist Jacob Trouba. “Cross Check: William Wegman and
Jacob Trouba” explores movement as a form of artistic production\, tran
slation\, and collaboration. Rooted in the shared language of hockey\, the
exhibition examines the body as both subject and medium through a series
of collaborative works presented publicly for the first time. Drawing on h
is experience as an athlete\, Trouba covers himself in ink while wearing h
ockey gear and propels himself across the canvas\, leaving behind marks th
at record speed\, force\, and impact. Wegman responds by translating those
gestures into paintings that reinterpret the movement at an intimate scal
e\, creating an ongoing dialogue between action and reflection. Borrowing
its title from the hockey maneuver in which a player forcefully checks an
opponent with both hands on the stick\, Cross Check reveals how physicalit
y\, play\, and creative exchange transform movement\, whether on the ice o
r in the studio\, into a powerful form of artistic expression. \n\n“Cros
s Check: William Wegman and Jacob Trouba” is organized by Senior Curator
Alana Hernandez and Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore and made possib
le by generous funding from NHL Unites. Additional support is provided by
the ASU Art Museum’s Creative Impact Board\, Director’s Council and I
 nnovation Council.

DESCRIPTION:“Wrought by Fire: Metalwork of the Southwest” seeks to cha
llenge the traditionally male-dominated history of metalworking by highlig
hting the work of four women artists –– Kim Cridler (United States\, b
 . 1968)\, Siri Devi Khandavilli (United States\, b. India)\, Wanesia Misqu
adace (Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa\, b. 1971)\, and Agnese
Udinotti (United States\, b. Greece 1940). This multigenerational grouping
of artists lends itself to a rich conversation about training\, history\,
and material concerns. Through diverse alloy-based practices\, the exhibi
tion explores connections between the body\, nature\, labor and regional c
ulture\, revealing metalwork as both an artistic and cultural form of tran
sformation. \n  \n“Wrought by Fire: Metalwork of the Southwest” is or
ganized by Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore and made possible by gene
rous funding from Windgate Charitable Foundation. This research was suppor

DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, Heidi Dauphin and Laura Spalding Best were paired up
to create an installation for Artlink’s Annual Gala at the Phoenix Art
Museum. The two initially were uncertain how their practices would mesh as
Dauphin is a mixed media/ceramic artist while Best is best known for her
found object paintings and murals. However\, after their first meeting\, t
hey formed an instant connection and friendship. Their conversations laste
d for hours\, discussing their individual practices. Among the many common
alities between both of their work was their desires to collect objects wh
ether it be personal everyday items or found objects. Each of their collec
tions were immense. Dauphin has an entire room dedicated to items she has
saved over the years to use in her artwork while Best’s house has what s
he deems as\, “paintings in waiting” tucked away throughout her house.
Both realized that they wanted to peel back the curtain of their artistic
practice and share their collection of objects but how? \nThat is when th
e idea of Curiosity Chapel was born. The team searched for months finding
the right furniture to house their collection\, creating a free-standing r
oom from thrifted cabinets and dressers. Hidden inside the drawers were co
llections of objects from both Dauphin and Best’s studios. With each new
drawer to open\, a new discovery. Visitors spent hours going through each
of the cabinets finding interesting collections of items along the way fr
om bread tags to silver spoons. The question that frequently fell from vis
itor’s lips\, “What’s next?” The duo felt this natural inertia to
continue this installation and began discussing possibilities. Their resol
ution: implode Curiosity Chapel. \nFor The Collectionists\, the artists de
cided that their one guiding rule for the exhibition would be that they co
uld only create artwork from the collections that were in Curiosity Chapel
. While on the surface\, the exhibition appears to be about two artists th
at have an affinity to collect found objects\, their practices are more in
terwoven than that. This exhibition explores the intersections of Dauphin
and Best’s practices including their affinity for numbers and both of th
eir habits of creating rules around their artwork. However\, what seems to
be most apparent in both of their work is how both of their artworks seem
to collect something much more existential\, the passage of time. \nOpeni
 ng Reception\nFriday\, September 11\, 6-8pm \nRSVP

DESCRIPTION:MIM’s theater team creates exceptional experiences for guest
s and performers\nTheater technician Laura Smith (left) and theater produc
tion manager Nick Cecconi (right) set the stage before a concert at the MI
M Music Theater. \n \nEvery year\, the MIM Music Theater presents more tha
n 360 performances by acclaimed musicians from around the world. Under the
leadership of artistic director Andrew Walesch\, the theater features a d
iverse lineup of artists spanning genres\, cultures\, and musical traditio
ns. Each performance offers an outstanding experience for guests and perfo
rmers alike thanks to the behind-the-scenes work of MIM’s theater team.
\nOnce an artist is booked\, theater production manager Nick Cecconi drive
s the technical and production aspects of the concert\, communicating with
artists’ managers\, coordinating logistics\, and overseeing technical c
onsiderations. Nick works closely with artists’ representatives to ensur
e that production details are addressed well before show day. \nFrom a per
former’s arrival in Phoenix until their departure after their show\, hos
pitality is managed by artistic operations coordinator Carrie Willis. Carr
ie handles every detail of the artists’ accommodations\, transportation\
, and food and beverage needs\, as well as the backstage experience\, ensu
ring that performers can focus entirely on delivering a great show. \nArti
stic operations coordinator Carrie Willis prepares the backstage VIP room
 before a performer’s arrival. \n \nConcierges Edwin Sarratt\, Jeff Insel
\, Jim Thornton\, and Mark DePue provide artists with a friendly welcome t
o Phoenix and a smooth travel experience. They often transport instruments
 \, gear\, and merchandise and assist with day-of-show needs. Edwin\, Jeff\
, and Jim also serve as day-of-show artist coordinator when Carrie is unav
ailable\, ensuring that the performers receive attentive support throughou
t their time at MIM. \nTheater technician Laura Smith adjusts a spotlight.
\n \nTheater technician Laura Smith is the lighting designer for most per
formances\, taking to the catwalks to focus spotlights on performers and o
perating colorful LED lighting to enhance the atmosphere during each conce
rt. Together\, Nick\, Laura\, and the theater crew— including a rotating
cast of experienced technicians—conduct sound checks and lighting rehea
rsals before every performance. During most concerts\, Nick and Laura work
behind the scenes to ensure that every aspect of the production runs smoo
thly and delivers a memorable experience. \n“Every night is a performanc
e that people have been looking forward to for weeks or even months\, and
we never take that for granted\,” Nick says. “We always want to set th
e artist up for success.” \nTheater production manager Nick Cecconi sits
at the mixing console in the theater. \n \nIn the hours before a show\, l
ead house manager Belle Winsor and house manager Victoria Schwentick\, who
oversee front-of-house operations\, set up merchandise tables and lead pr
e-show meetings for the volunteer team members who run the merch table and
serve as ushers. Belle and Victoria also coordinate show starts\, playing
chimes to announce showtime to guests enjoying drinks and snacks from the
concert bar in North El Río\, and they help the VTM ushers guide guests
to their seats. \n \nLead house manager Belle Winsor (center left) and hou
se manager Victoria Schwentick (center right) hold a pre-show meeting with
volunteer team members. \n \nLike the musicians it supports\, MIM’s the
ater team works in concert to create memorable experiences for artists and
audiences. \n“The room is extraordinary\, but it’s the people who mak
e it sing\,” Walesch says. “Artists feel it the moment they walk in th
e door—a whole team that treats their show like it’s the only one that
matters. When you approach each night with that level of intention\, you
give artists the freedom to take the music somewhere extraordinary. That
’s when a concert becomes an experience that stays with people.”
