DESCRIPTION:[Mathematical Biology Seminar](https://sciences.ucf.edu/mathbi
 o/mathematical-biology-seminar/)\n\n[Dr. Zhisheng Shuai](https://sciences.
ucf.edu/sdmss/person/zhisheng-shuai/)\, a professor in the UCF School of D
ata\, Mathematical\, and Statistical Sciences) will speak on "The Mathemat
ics of Spatial Ecology and Epidemiology: A Perspective from Matrix and Gra
ph Theory" at this week's seminar.\n\nAbstract: Understanding how spatial
and temporal heterogeneity influences population and disease dynamics is a
central challenge in ecology and epidemiology. In this talk\, we explore
mathematical approaches that connect matrix theory\, graph theory\, and di
fferential equations to model and analyze these complex systems. In partic
ular\, we demonstrate how generalized inverses and related tools from line
ar algebra and graph theory can quantify variability in population persist
ence\, growth rates and disease invasibility across heterogeneous habitats
. By integrating these techniques with differential equation models\, we e
xamine the effects of habitat structure\, resource distribution and migrat
ion on population stability and disease spread. The talk highlights how ma
thematical frameworks provide novel insights into ecological resilience\,
conservation strategies and infectious disease management\, illustrating t
o a general audience the interplay between mathematical theory and real-wo
rld biological systems.\n\nShort Bio: Dr. Zhisheng Shuai is a professor of
mathematics in the School of Data\, Mathematical\, and Statistical Scienc
es at UCF. Prior to joining UCF in 2012\, he earned a bachelor's degree in
mathematics and a master's degree in applied mathematics from Northeast N
ormal University in China. He then earned his doctoral degree in applied m
athematics from the University of Alberta before completing an NSERC Postd
octoral Fellowship at the University of Victoria\, supported by the presti
gious Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Dr. Shu
ai's research focuses on mathematical ecology and epidemiology\, different
ial equations and dynamical systems. His current research investigates how
various mathematical modeling approaches can be used to study the complex
dynamics of infectious diseases. Beyond his research\, Dr. Shuai has play
ed a significant role in UCF's mathematical modeling curriculum and has le
d efforts to recruit and train UCF teams\, resulting in impressive ranking
s in various math modeling competitions. He has been honored with the UCF
Teaching Incentive Program award for his outstanding teaching. Dr. Shuai a
lso serves as a reviewer for several research journals\, including the Soc
iety for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Journal on Applied Mathematics
\, Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems and many others.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nModern quantum technologies depend on our ability
to understand\, predict\, and ultimately engineer interactions between el
 ectrons\, excitons\, spins\, and photons. In this colloquium\, I will desc
ribe a method of turning quantum materials into programmable quantum syste
ms. I will first briefly discuss how many-body GW-Bethe-Salpeter and Kadan
off-Baym approaches provide a predictive framework for the linear and nonl
inear optical response of two-dimensional semiconductors\, including excit
onic effects\, harmonic generation\, and design rules for enhanced nonline
ar response in layered materials. I will then focus on recent work showing
  that a gate-tunable conductor-dielectric-conductor heterostructure can pr
ovide universal tuning of quantum electrodynamic interactions: the same pl
atform allows interactions to be switched from familiar power-law behavior
to exponential screening and even logarithmic antiscreening\, with direct
implications for reconfigurable Coulomb\, dipolar\, van der Waals/Casimir
 -Polder\, and spin-spin interactions.\n\nBio: \nMichael N. Leuenberger is
Professor of Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Ce
ntral Florida\, with appointments in the NanoScience Technology Center and
Department of Physics. He is also a Visiting Scientist at MIT. He receive
d his Ph.D. in theoretical condensed matter physics from the University of
Basel\, Switzerland\, under Daniel Loss\, and subsequently held postdocto
ral positions at the University of Iowa with Michael Flatte and at UC San
Diego with Lu Sham. His research spans quantum information science\, nonli
near optics\, many-body theory of quantum materials\, and multiscale model
ing of quantum devices. He has led or co-led research supported by AFOSR\,
ARO\, DARPA\, NSF\, and ONR\, and his recent work includes predictive man
y-body theories of nonlinear optical response in 2D materials\, excitonic
quantum matter in breathing-kagome materials\, and programmable quantum el
ectrodynamic interactions in van der Waals heterostructures.
