looking to expand your musical vocabulary\, you'll find a welcoming commu
nity where learning is hands-on\, encouraging\, and rooted in respect for
the cultures from which these rhythms come.\nI believe rhythm is one of hu

erge when we make music together.

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nModern quantum technologies depend on our ability
to understand\, predict\, and ultimately engineer interactions between el
 ectrons\, excitons\, spins\, and photons. In this colloquium\, I will desc
ribe a method of turning quantum materials into programmable quantum syste
ms. I will first briefly discuss how many-body GW-Bethe-Salpeter and Kadan
off-Baym approaches provide a predictive framework for the linear and nonl
inear optical response of two-dimensional semiconductors\, including excit
onic effects\, harmonic generation\, and design rules for enhanced nonline
ar response in layered materials. I will then focus on recent work showing
  that a gate-tunable conductor-dielectric-conductor heterostructure can pr
ovide universal tuning of quantum electrodynamic interactions: the same pl
atform allows interactions to be switched from familiar power-law behavior
to exponential screening and even logarithmic antiscreening\, with direct
implications for reconfigurable Coulomb\, dipolar\, van der Waals/Casimir
 -Polder\, and spin-spin interactions.\n\nBio: \nMichael N. Leuenberger is
Professor of Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics at the University of Ce
ntral Florida\, with appointments in the NanoScience Technology Center and
Department of Physics. He is also a Visiting Scientist at MIT. He receive
d his Ph.D. in theoretical condensed matter physics from the University of
Basel\, Switzerland\, under Daniel Loss\, and subsequently held postdocto
ral positions at the University of Iowa with Michael Flatte and at UC San
Diego with Lu Sham. His research spans quantum information science\, nonli
near optics\, many-body theory of quantum materials\, and multiscale model
ing of quantum devices. He has led or co-led research supported by AFOSR\,
ARO\, DARPA\, NSF\, and ONR\, and his recent work includes predictive man
y-body theories of nonlinear optical response in 2D materials\, excitonic
quantum matter in breathing-kagome materials\, and programmable quantum el
ectrodynamic interactions in van der Waals heterostructures.

DESCRIPTION:[Mathematical Biology Seminar](https://sciences.ucf.edu/mathbi
 o/mathematical-biology-seminar/)\n\nCarolina Solomon\, of UCF's School of
Data\, Mathematical and Statistical Sciences\, will speak on "Modeling the
Effects of Post-Infection Mortality on Malaria Dynamics" at this week's s
eminar.\n\nAbstract: In 2025\, the World Health Organization reported 282
million malaria cases\, approximately 610\,000 of which were fatal. About
95% of those fatalities were caused by the Plasmodium falciparum strain. U
nlike other strains\, P. falciparum can cause mortality after recovery due
to long-term effects of cerebral malaria and severe anemia.\n\nTo study t
he impact of post-infection mortality\, we formulated a modified susceptib
le\, exposed\, infected and removed (SEIR) disease model for P. falciparum
and investigated how incorporating the PIM factor changes disease dynamic
 s. Analytical and numerical studies show oscillations at parameter values
driven by the joint impact of reinfection and mortality among recovered in
dividuals. This can inform public health by showing how P. falciparum dise
ase dynamics may differ from what we previously believed and highlighting
a possible need for longer-term monitoring of recovered patients.\n\nShort
Bio: Carolina Solomon is a third-year mathematics major at UCF. She was s
upported by the 2026 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship to investiga
te how post-infection mortality affects malaria dynamics. She hopes to con
tinue her research in mathematical epidemiology and complete an undergradu
ate honors thesis in her final year at UCF.
