DESCRIPTION:Instant Happy: Lost and Found Polaroids \nOpening reception Fr
iday\, Sept. 11. \nIn the past two decades\, Curtis Cates has collected mo
re than 1\,500 Polaroids. And in a project that began in 2024\, Cates\, hi
s wife and collaborator\, Cindy Connolly\, along with friend and writer Da
vid Bjerklie\, selected images for this show. It was a process that took m
ore than a year\; the sheer variety of the images made selection a dauntin
g\, but fascinating challenge. \nHow do photographs shape our perceptions
of the passage of time? How much of a photo’s value is intent\, how much
is context\, how much is interpretation? As Cates\, Connolly\, and Bjerkl
ie began to compare and evaluate which images were “best” or “most i
nteresting\,” they found there were no simple answers. Photos that one w
eek were immediately put into the “absolutely must include” category w
ould often be reconsidered and moved into the “probably not” category.
And vice versa. It seemed like a crazily arbitrary project at times.  Bu
t that probably should not have been a surprise\, given the nature of the
images. In the Q&A that accompanies this exhibition\, Cates and Connolly m
ake this point perfectly\; above all\, their aim is to stimulate conversat
ion and new perspectives on what can be seen in the most ordinary of snaps
 hots. \n  \nCurtis Wade Cates\, a native of Lubbock\, Texas\, is a musici
an\, street photographer\, collector of street art\, amateur archivist and
former network news crew member. He has been a documentary producer (Peac
e Through Understanding: The 1964/65 New York World’s Fair\, Tex and Gen
e)\; public access TV producer and star (Hillbilly Peckers’ Barbecue TV
Hour)\; and video editor (Ramones: Around the World\, Kelly Lamb’s Geish
a Girl and Origami). He co-created video support for such exhibits as Marg
ot Fonteyn in America: A Celebration at the New York Public Library for th
e Performing Arts at Lincoln Center\, Ukulele Fever and Pedal to the Metal
: A History of Children’s Pedal Cars\, Stamford Art Museum\, and Milt Hi
nton: A Memorial Exhibition of His Jazz Photographs 1938-86\, Flushing Tow
n Hall). Curtis also co-curated a show on art and industry at the 1964/65
World’s Fair for the Queens Museum of Art and restored and archived epis
odes of Marc Miller and Paul Tshinkel’s ART/new york interviews with suc
h artists as Jean-Michel Basquiat\, Robert Mapplethorpe and Keith Haring.
In 2012\, Curtis co-curated The Coloring Book at Manhattan’s ABC No Rio.
More than 100 artists interpreted pages of a Masterpieces coloring book w
hich Curtis had found on a radiator in the Lower East Side building where
he lived. \nCindy Connolly Cates\, native of Omaha\, has worked as a news
paper reporter\, as well as for Time Inc. publications in New York City a
nd People Inc. in Des Moines. She is currently focusing primarily on book
editing projects. In 2023\, Cates and Connolly curated the Rodeo Coloring
Book exhibit at the Old Feed Store gallery in Bassett\, Nebraska\, an homa
ge to the late rodeo rider Casey Jochem. \nDavid Bjerklie grew up in North
Dakota and since 1984 has been a reporter\, writer and editor for TIME Ma
gazine\, TIME For Kids\, and TIME Special Editions. He has written on a br
oad range of science\, environment and medicine topics\, with special emph
asis in recent years on mental health\, language\, animal intelligence\, t
he nature of hope\, the character of facts\, and the psychology of being w
rong. He has been a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at M.I.T.\, a Rosalyn
n Carter Mental Health Journalism Fellow\, two-time grant recipient at the
Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings in Germany\, and a National Science Founda
tion Media Fellow at McMurdo and South Pole Stations in Antarctica. He liv

DESCRIPTION:What Lies in the Shadows is a convergence of two artists' work
\, Alex Renbarger and Maddie Hinrichs. Both construct domestic interiors t
hat balance familiarity with ambiguity\, using deep phthalo blues\, burnt
burgundies\, and ultramarine purples as near-blacks that carry the eye thr
ough the exhibition. Renbarger builds unreal spaces from Photoshopped coll
ages using AI-generated imagery as foundations for her oil paintings. With
out the limiting specifics of a pre-existing space\, the imagery can be le
d by feeling\, allowing something impossible to take on the atmosphere of
memory and feel remembered without ever having existed. Hinrichs achieves
a similar feeling from a different direction\, instead projecting images o
f real spaces into lived interiors\, capturing and reworking those interse
ctions through embroidery and paint\, forcing disparate perspectives toget
her. Her work overlaps and collides images of the real until they begin to
lose focus. Together\, the work uses shadows to come to terms with the li
mits of what can be understood and what only needs to be accepted. Not eve
rything needs to be brought into the light to change the way we understand
what is in front of us.\n\n \n\nAbout the Artists\n\nAlex Renbarger and M
addie Hinrichs are Lincoln\, Nebraska-based visual artists whose work uses
domestic space and color to explore emotional and psychological complexit
ies. Hinrichs received her MFA from the University at Albany and has exhib
ited nationally\, with work featured in New American Paintings\, The Woven
Tale Press\, and other publications. Renbarger received her MFA in Painti
ng and Drawing from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln\, exhibits region
ally and nationally\, and focuses much of her professional practice on tea
ching painting\, drawing\, color theory\, and professional practice. Commu
nity is central to both artists\, especially through their work at LUX Cen
 ter for the Arts in Lincoln.\n\n \n\nInstagram: @alex_renbarger_art ·

DESCRIPTION:Joslyn Art Museum will have an exhibition featuring Sadie Barn

E: The museum stays open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. \n\n\n\nWorking across
  drawing\, sculpture\, photography\, and installation\, Barnette mines bot
h personal narratives and collective histories\, exploring how the two int
ersect and diverge over the course of one’s life. Her exhibition in the
CAP Gallery centers on a recording she discovered on a doorbell security c
amera. In the short black-and-white video\, the artist’s father is seen
removing helium balloons from the trunk of a car. As he wrangles the infla
 tables – a gift for the artist’s mother – a single heart-shaped ball
oon floats away without his notice\, prompting a bewildered search of the
vehicle. Upon reviewing the footage\, Barnette recognized that an easily o
verlooked episode had many stories to tell about gestures of affection\, a
bout bearing witness to everyday life\, and about the transformation of a
fleeting moment into the stuff of family lore.

DESCRIPTION:“Colecciones de Estudio de Invierno” brings together new a
nd recent work by Omaha sculptor and glass artist Therman Statom\, one of
the defining figures of the contemporary glass movement. The title points
to the nature of the work itself: Pieces that emerged from sustained studi
o practice\, gathered here as a kind of personal inventory\, objects that
carry the accumulation of a long creative life. The exhibition runs throug
h Sept. 26. Note: The museum closes one hour early on Sundays at 6 p.m. \n
\n\n\nStatom works by cutting\, painting\, and assembling sheets of plate
glass\, gluing them together into large-scale sculptural forms—chairs\,
 ladders\, houses\, wall-mounted constructions—and sandblasting their sur
faces into canvases for color and line. Found objects enter the work along
the way\, adding texture and narrative. The resulting pieces are at once
structural and painterly\, drawing from the gestural energy of Abstract Ex
pressionism and the economy of Minimalism without settling comfortably int
 o either tradition.

DESCRIPTION:The Joslyn Castle & Gardens and Metropolitan Community Colleg
e are partnering once again for the Art & Literary Festival. This year we
delve into the darkness in an exploration of Gothic Art and Literature! \
n\n\n\nThe main event of the festival is the production of an anthology of
dramatized short stories and excerpts from three Gothic era tales\, adap
ted and directed by Scott Working of MCC. Guests will travel through the
halls of Omaha’s own Victorian Castle\, each room revealing a different
vignette. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe dramatic production includes scenes
from three iconic works of Gothic fiction. A young mother writes about her
isolation and anxiety in The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilm
an. In Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw\, a governess shares her con
fusion and fear of evil influences. The final chapter of Robert Louis Stev
enson’s famous novella is titled “Henry Jekyll’s Full Statement of t
he Case” and is the final confession of the doctor. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Cast
le bar will be open selling refreshments and libations\, please bring a va
lid ID to partake in adult beverages. \n\n\n\nThe Carriage House doors ope
n for check-in at 6:30pm\, guests will then be divided into groups and gui
ded to the Castle for the theatrical performance at 7pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\
n\n\n\nDungeon Synth Night in the Carriage House: Doors at 9pm\, Music at
9:30pm \n\n\n\nDungeon Synth Night returns to the Carriage House as part o
f the Joslyn Castle Gothic Art and Literature Festival! Enter the realm of
synthesized fantasy soundscapes with a DJ set by Ladie Muerte and perform
ance by Blood Tower. \n\n\n\nTicketed event for ages 18+\, combo tickets a
vailable for guests attending Friday’s theatrical production. \n\n\n\n\n
\nNOTE: Our interior elevator is currently non-functioning. We are hoping
it is repaired in time for the festival\, but if you have mobility issues
please note some programming takes place on the upper levels of the home.
\n\n\n\nThe Gothic Art and Literature Festival receives educational progra
mmatic support provided by the Nebraska Arts Council\, Amy L. Scott Family
Foundation and the Whitmore Charitable Trust.
