 hibition of new paintings by abstract artist Hannah Franco. Featuring ten 
 new paintings\, Hannah Franco brings her once-hidden washes of color forwa
 rd as the true subject of the work\, revealing a self that had long lived 
 quietly beneath the surface. Honoring the power of softness and vulnerabil
 ity\, Franco pays tribute to the often invisible and systemically underval
 ued domestic labor and love women have long contributed to their communiti
 es. \nFranco earned a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York City and studie
 d fresco painting in Florence\, Italy\, now currently living and working i
 n Oakland\, California. She has shown with Oxide Collective in San Francis
 co and is represented by SLATE Contemporary Gallery in Oakland. \nOpening

 ve in Oakland \nTransmission Gallery is pleased to present Fear Not\, rece
 nt work by William Rhodes. \nWilliam Rhodes’s sculptures on view incorpo
 rate objects that have been used\, inherited\, discarded\, or found with e
 lements he has carved himself. Trained early on as a furniture maker\, he 
 combines hand carved figures\, flames and snakes with objects collected fr
 om a family home\, photographs\, hardware\, tools\, and other remnants of 
 everyday life. Neon words signal from some pieces. \nThe resulting works r
 esemble shrines or memorials\, but they remain grounded in the ordinary. R
 eligious symbols appear alongside household objects. A photograph might be
  surrounded by carved waves\, tools\, hardware\, animals\, or religious sy
 mbols. A suitcase can become an architectural space. A toilet becomes the 
 base of an unexpected monument. Things with little apparent value are care
 fully incorporated into elaborate constructions\, their histories becoming
  part of the work.\n​\nRhodes is equally interested in people\; family\,
  mentors\, and leaders\, as well as those who have been overlooked or trea
 ted as disposable\, recognizing and elevating their presence in his work. 
 By giving attention to these lives\, enshrining and revering them\, he con
 siders how value is assigned and who gets remembered. \nThe title Fear Not
  appears in the work as both a phrase and a kind of instruction. It can be
  read in relation to the religious imagery that runs throughout the sculpt
 ures\, but it also takes on a more personal meaning. To look closely at li
 ves and objects that are easily dismissed is\, in its own way\, an act of 
 resistance to that dismissal. \nAll are welcome to join us for the Artist
 ’s Reception\, September 26th. Stop by any time 1-4 pm to greet the arti
 st and enjoy the light refreshments. \nPlease also join us for the Artist
 ’s Talk with accompanying gospel choir performance by the Dr. George W.
