DESCRIPTION:Unveiling the Invisible Universe \n28 minutes\nAges 8 and up
\nFor thousands of years humans observed the light coming from the nigh
t sky with their eyes. In the beginning of the 17th century\, the inventio
n of the telescope revolutionized our knowledge of the Universe. Finally\,
in the 20th century with the advent of rockets\, it became possible to go
above the Earth’s atmosphere and observe X-ray and gamma ray radiation
which are the marks of the hot and violent Universe. But it is not only li
ght that can give us information about the cosmos. Neutrinos and cosmic ra
ys also provide vital information. Finally\, the detection by the LIGO exp
eriment of gravitational waves from two merging black holes opened a new w
indow in astrophysics. This fulldome show presents images of the cosmos as
revealed by all these different messengers.

across the sky — day by day\, month by month — was the only way to kee
p track of time for countless past civilizations. Don’t be fooled by the
terminology\; although it is a typical dwarf star\, the Sun consumes 600

his special Paint & Sip invites guests outdoors to explore the connection
between Earth and space through spray paint and natural forms collected fr
om the forests surrounding Chabot Space & Science Center. Using leaves\, b
ranches\, cones\, and other organic materials as stencils and texture tool
s\, participants will create layered cosmic scenes inspired by nebulae\, s
tar fields\, planetary surfaces\, and the shared patterns found in nature
and the universe. Your ticket includes two drink tickets for wine or beer\
, along with snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. This 21+ event offers a r
elaxed\, creative evening that blends art\, science\, and the beauty of Ch
 abot’s natural setting. \n  \nIn this hands-on outdoor workshop\, guest
s will use spray paint alongside natural materials gathered from the fores
t to build dynamic compositions. Leaves\, needles\, and branches become to
ols for creating organic textures that echo real astronomical phenomena\,
such as swirling nebulae\, cratered planets\, and cosmic dust clouds. The
session emphasizes experimentation\, layering\, and the translation of nat
ural forms into otherworldly landscapes. \n  \nAstronomy Presentation: Pa
tterns in Nature & the Cosmos \nDiscover how the same shapes and processes
appear across vastly different scales\, from plant structures and erosion
patterns on Earth to nebulae\, galaxies\, and planetary surfaces in space

DESCRIPTION:12 minutes\, all ages. \nTelescopes built to detect electromag
netic waves\, like visible light\, infrared\, radio waves\, and other form
s\, give us the ability to see objects and events at great distances in th
e universe\, and far back in time. Today\, a new type of instrument\, the
“gravity wave telescope”\, is giving us the power to “hear” cosmic
events beyond the sight of ordinary telescopes. Gravity waves are ripples
in spacetime created by events like collisions between black holes\, an
d powerful processes that took place in the earliest times of our universe
. \nThe Dutch Black Hole Consortium is currently building an enormous unde
rground gravity wave detector\, called the Einstein Telescope. When comple
ted\, this instrument will provide unprecedented insight into the nature o
f the universe and its origin\, allowing scientists to probe cosmic secret
s that light waves cannot illuminate.
