A New Chapter for West Harlem Arts: Rio II Art Gallery Reopens with a P
 owerful Exhibition by Kenia Akridge \n \n \n \n \n
 		\n \n \n \n \n August 12\,
  2026 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The
reopening of the Rio II Art Gallery marks the return of a cherished cultur
 al space\, and a renewal of a longstanding commitment to art\, community\,
and creative expression in Upper Manhattan.A program of Broadway Housing
Communities\, Rio II Gallery has long served as a platform where emerging
and established artists engage audiences through exhibitions that reflect
the richness and diversity of West Harlem’s cultural landscape. With its
doors open once again\, the gallery begins a new chapter by presenting an
exhibition featuring the compelling work of artist Kenia Akridge\, curate
 d by Ana-Ofelia Rodríguez and José Reyes. \n \n \n \n
 				\n \n \n \n \n \n \n For decades\, Broadway Housin
g Communities has understood that affordable housing and the arts are inse
parable components of vibrant\, healthy communities. Through the Rio Galle
ries – of which there are three – the organization has cultivated oppo
rtunities for artists while creating spaces where residents\, neighbors\,
and visitors can encounter contemporary art in an accessible and welcoming
environment. The reopening of Rio II\, located at BHC’s icon Dorothy Da
y building on 135th Street and Riverside Drive\, reaffirms that mission\,
celebrating creativity as an essential part of community life. The inaugur
al exhibition places Kenia Akridge’s work at the center of this renewed
vision. Akridge’s artistic practice explores identity\, memory\, resilie
nce\, and transformation through expressive visual language. Her works inv
ite viewers to engage deeply with personal and collective narratives\, bal
ancing emotional intensity with moments of beauty and contemplation. Throu
gh layered imagery\, texture\, and color\, Akridge creates pieces that enc
ourage reflection on the complexities of human experience while celebratin
 g strength and possibility. \n \n \n \n \n \n

Curator Ana-Ofelia Rodríguez flanked by artists Andrea Arroyo and F
elipe Galindo at the recent show opening\n \n \n \n
\n \n \n \n Attending the exhibition were local artists an
d community leaders\, such as artists Andrea Arroyo\, Felipe Galindo\, Mil
agros Batista\, Dorothy Krakauer\, NoMAA’s Uptown Arts Stroll Director M
artin Collins\, and former Community Board Chair Barry Wienberg\, just to
name a few. \nThe exhibition has been thoughtfully curated by Ana-Ofelia R
odríguez and José Reyes\, whose longstanding dedication to arts programm
ing has helped shape the cultural identity of the Rio Galleries. Rodrígue
z\, who established Broadway Housing Communities’ gallery program\, has
spent decades creating exhibition opportunities for artists while fosterin
g meaningful connections between art and community. Reyes brings his own c
uratorial vision\, emphasizing dialogue between artists\, audiences\, and
the neighborhoods the galleries serve. Together\, they have assembled an e
xhibition that honors both Akridge’s distinctive artistic voice and the
 gallery’s enduring mission. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
\n Miriam Raccah’s arrival as BHC’s new executive director s
ignals a powerful moment of renewal for the RIO Galleries\, whose reopenin
g stands as both a cultural homecoming and a forward‑looking commitment
to West Harlem. Under Raccah’s leadership\, the galleries are being rein
troduced not just as exhibition spaces but as vibrant community platforms\
, places where local artists\, neighborhood stories\, and BHC’s reinvigo
rated vision converge. Her stewardship marks a fresh chapter of collaborat
ion\, creativity\, and public engagement\, positioning the RIO galleries a
s a cornerstone of BHC’s deeper partnership with West Harlem and its evo
lving cultural landscape. For Broadway Housing Communities\, the return of
Rio II reflects an ongoing investment in the belief that art belongs with
in the everyday lives of the communities it serves. \n \n \n
 		\n \n \n \n Miriam Raccah\, Broadwa
 y Housing Communities' Chief Executive Officer\n \n \n
 	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n On e
 xhibit\, by Kenia Akridge\n \n \n \n \n \n \n
\n Visitors can expect an exhibition that is visually engaging w
hile offering opportunities for thoughtful dialogue. Akridge’s work chal
lenges viewers to consider themes of identity\, perseverance\, and belongi
ng\, subjects that resonate deeply within the diverse communities surround
ing the gallery. The exhibition demonstrates how contemporary art can insp
ire empathy\, curiosity\, and connection across generations and background
 s. As Rio II Art Gallery welcomes visitors once again\, the exhibition fea
turing Kenia Akridge stands as both a celebration and an invitation: a cel
ebration of artistic excellence and community resilience\, and an invitati
on for audiences to rediscover a space where creativity\, culture\, and co
nversation continue to thrive. With the leadership of Broadway Housing Com
munities in Miriam Raccah\, and the curatorial expertise of Ana-Ofelia Rod
ríguez and José Reyes\, Rio II Gallery resumes its role as an important
cultural destination—one where art not only reflects the community but a
 lso helps shape its future. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
