The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song : “Oxford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about  James Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the Universi ty of Mississippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This co uld have happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbus\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 30s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small st ore she owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white officers holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a sto p sign. \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days o ld\, Mrs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic vi olation led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wri ght was assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of two complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her rel ease\, Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a federal lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garb us landed in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s l yrics reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarbus warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to n othing\, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against whit e supremacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often h arbored black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vic ious beating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nS ixty years later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still u nder attack\, this play could not be more relevant. \nAbout Playwright Sus an Charlotte\nSusan’s multi-faceted career started with Prism Blues. Bas ed on her work as a prison counselor\, the play earned her a place in Colu mbia’s MFA program and won the prestigious Joseph Kesselring Award. Her 60 full-length & one-act plays have been produced throughout the country. They include: The Shoemaker starring Danny Aiello\, directed by Antony Marsellis\; She’s Of A Certain Age\; The Round Table (w/ Oscar & Tony winner Peter Stone)\, and When Truth Is Not Enough. Her play\, Love Div ided By\, was produced by the Actors Studio and was made into a film wit h an original score by Philip Glass. The film reopened MoMA’s Titus II t heatre. Her other films include: Something Like That\, A Broken Sole\, Co me On (Hamptons Film Festival.) Her TV credits include\; Did You Know My Husband? with Louise Lasser & Carole Shelley (PBS)\; The Comedy Zone w ith Patty Duke & Paul Reiser (CBS)\; Guiding Light and Loving (CBS). \ nSusan authored the acclaimed books Creativity and Creativity In Film  and has written for NY Magazine and Playbill.
