 n to the public\, one Friday night each month from May through October at 
 Carl Schurz Park in Manhattan. Carl Schurz Park is located along East End 
 Avenue at the end of East 86th Street. The park has a lovely view of a lot
  of sky above the East River\, Roosevelt Island\, Queens\, and the Queensb
 orough and Triborough bridges. \nWe meet on the park esplanade (John Finle
 y Walk)\, overlooking the East River. The 86th Street entrance to the park
  is the closest to where we set up\, though that entrance requires climbin
 g stairs to reach the esplanade. One may enter the park at many other poin
 ts\, including 87th Street\, thereby avoiding the stairs. \n2026 Observing

DESCRIPTION:THE ASTRONOMER WHO CREATED THE MESSIER CATALOG OF OBJECTS  IN
  SPACE\nThe Life and Legacy of Charles Messier (2026)\nThursday\, Sept. 17
 \, Online\, 7–9 PM\nNew telescope observers quickly learn of a catalog o
 f 110 famous objects that are viewable in the night sky. They are very pop
 ular targets for amateur observers. Each is designated as an “M” objec
 t\, its own Messier number. Today there are several much larger catalogs f
 or thousands of such deep space objects. \nMessier published his list betw
 een 1758 to 1782 to rule out claims of other observers to having spotted a
  new comet. He did not know what these “M” objects actually were but h
 e knew they weren’t comets. The different types of Messier objects will 
 be discussed and presented as well as how they connect with the life cycle
  of stars in modern astronomy. We’ll learn of the life and times of this
  seminal\, late-18th-Century\, French astronomer. \n \n\n\nOur instructor
  is Bill Murray\, an amateur astronomer for more than 55 years. Bill Murra
 y has been a software engineer\, a physics and mathematics teacher\, and a
  planetarium technician and lecturer at the New Jersey State Planetarium i
 n Trenton. He has owned more than a dozen different telescopes and is a pa
 st observatory chair\, secretary\, program chair\, assistant director and 
 director of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Princeton. Presently he
  is its outreach chair. Bill observes the night skies\, and dabbles in EAA
 \, and astro-imaging with a 130 mm Astro-Physics APO refractor from his ba

 d Bennett Field is next to the Community Garden. It is within walking dist
 ance of the Q35 bus\, and there is ample parking for cars. This location i
 s also easy for people to find in the dark\, as it is next to the Communit
 y Garden. \n  \nTraveling by car:\n\nDrive south on Flatbush Avenue. The 
 entrance to Floyd Bennett Field is just before the toll plaza for the Mari
 ne Parkway Bridge. There is a traffic light at this intersection.\nMake th
 e left turn at the traffic light just before the toll plaza\, and enter th
 e Park.\nApproximately 1\,000 feet down there is a Left-turn intersectio
 n. Make the hard left turn.\n3/10 mile is an entrance in the fence line 
 on the left side. Turn off headlights and leave running lights on and slow
 ly turn into the lot.\nIf you get to the Floyd Bennett Garden Association\
 , YOU WENT TO FAR. (If you are coming from the other direction inside the 
 Park\, pass it and the entrance will be on the right.)\n\n  \nTraveling b
 y mass transit:\n\nThe Q35 bus connects with the Nostrand Avenue terminal 
 for the 2 and 5 subways. Take the bus to the last stop in Brooklyn\, just 
 before the toll plaza.\nAfter exiting the bus\, cross Flatbush Avenue and 
 follow the directions above.

 t The Venue: The Cemetery of the Evergreens is a non-denominational cemete
 ry in Brooklyn and Queens\, New York\, colloquially called Evergreen Cemet
 ery. It was incorporated in 1849\, not long after the passage of New York
 ’s Rural Cemetery Act spurred the development of cemeteries outside Manh
 attan. For a time\, it was the busiest cemetery in New York City. The ceme
 tery borders Brooklyn and Queens and covers 225 acres of rolling hills and
  gently sloping meadows. It is a national historic landmark that has comma
 nding open area views\, free of glare from local lighting\, where the majo
 rity of the urban night sky can be seen.

 view of a lot of sky above the East River\, Roosevelt Island\, Queens\, an

 e (John Finley Walk)\, overlooking the East River. The 86th Street entranc
 e to the park is the closest to where we set up\, though that entrance req
 uires climbing stairs to reach the esplanade. One may enter the park at ma
 ny other points\, including 87th Street\, thereby avoiding the stairs. \n2

 Data on Early Star and Galaxy Formation (2026)\nThursday\, October 8\, on 
 line 7–9 PM\nThe James Webb Space Telescope sees the universe in infrare
 d light and reveals new\,\neven paradoxical\, insights into cosmology\, pa
 rticularly on star and galaxy formation.\n\n\nAbstract:\n\nUnderstanding t
 he formation and evolution of galaxies remains a challenge of modern cosmo
 logy. Why do stars start and stop forming in galaxies? How do galaxies par
 ticipate in their larger cosmic environments\, including black holes? How 
 did the variety in galactic structures originate? What was the nature of t
 he very first galaxies in the early universe? The James Webb Space Telesco
 pe has revolutionized our ability to answer these questions from 13 billio
 n years ago.  Also new data provide clues about the origin of key chemica
 l elements such as oxygen and nitrogen\, which\, in turn\, reveal the work
 ings of the galaxy formation process itself. \n\nOur instructor:\nAlice Sh
 apley is a full professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at th
 e University of California\, Los Angeles (UCLA). She obtained her PhD from
  the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Shapley uses large ground-bas
 ed telescopes (e.g.\, the Keck Observatory in Hawaii) and space-based faci
 lities (e.g.\, the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope) 
 to collect optical and infrared images and spectra of distant galaxies to 
 address questions in galaxy formation and evolution. Shapley is an elected
  fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Astronomical Soc
 iety\, and has been awarded prizes and honors from each and elsewhere.\n\n

 d Bennett Field is next to the Community Garden. It is within walking dist
 ance of the Q35 bus\, and there is ample parking for cars. This location i
 s also easy for people to find in the dark\, as it is next to the Communit
 y Garden. \n  \nTraveling by car:\n\nDrive south on Flatbush Avenue. The 
 entrance to Floyd Bennett Field is just before the toll plaza for the Mari
 ne Parkway Bridge. There is a traffic light at this intersection.\nMake th
 e left turn at the traffic light just before the toll plaza\, and enter th
 e Park.\nApproximately 1\,000 feet down there is a Left-turn intersectio
 n. Make the hard left turn.\n3/10 mile is an entrance in the fence line 
 on the left side. Turn off headlights and leave running lights on and slow
 ly turn into the lot.\nIf you get to the Floyd Bennett Garden Association\
 , YOU WENT TO FAR. (If you are coming from the other direction inside the

 t The Venue: The Cemetery of the Evergreens is a non-denominational cemete
 ry in Brooklyn and Queens\, New York\, colloquially called Evergreen Cemet
 ery. It was incorporated in 1849\, not long after the passage of New York
 ’s Rural Cemetery Act spurred the development of cemeteries outside Manh
 attan. For a time\, it was the busiest cemetery in New York City. The ceme
 tery borders Brooklyn and Queens and covers 225 acres of rolling hills and
  gently sloping meadows. It is a national historic landmark that has comma
 nding open area views\, free of glare from local lighting\, where the majo
 rity of the urban night sky can be seen.

 g lights that don’t turn off\, park at the fence. NOTE: Events are cance
 led in the event of rain/snow\, if the sky is overcast\, or if there is sn
 ow covering the ground. \n\nDirections:\n \nThe observing location at Floy
 d Bennett Field is next to the Community Garden. It is within walking dist
 ance of the Q35 bus\, and there is ample parking for cars. This location i
 s also easy for people to find in the dark\, as it is next to the Communit
 y Garden. \n  \nTraveling by car:\n\nDrive south on Flatbush Avenue. The 
 entrance to Floyd Bennett Field is just before the toll plaza for the Mari
 ne Parkway Bridge. There is a traffic light at this intersection.\nMake th
 e left turn at the traffic light just before the toll plaza\, and enter th
 e Park.\nApproximately 1\,000 feet down there is a Left-turn intersectio
 n. Make the hard left turn.\n3/10 mile is an entrance in the fence line 
 on the left side. Turn off headlights and leave running lights on and slow
 ly turn into the lot.\nIf you get to the Floyd Bennett Garden Association\
 , YOU WENT TO FAR. (If you are coming from the other direction inside the 
 Park\, pass it and the entrance will be on the right.)\n\n  \nTraveling b
 y mass transit:\n\nThe Q35 bus connects with the Nostrand Avenue terminal 
 for the 2 and 5 subways. Take the bus to the last stop in Brooklyn\, just 
 before the toll plaza.\nAfter exiting the bus\, cross Flatbush Avenue and 
 follow the directions above.

  is part of Gateway National Park in Brooklyn. If you do come out\, rememb
 er to observe proper car light etiquette. Douse your lights at the entranc
 e in the fence line\, and let someone guide you in. If your car has runnin
 g lights that don’t turn off\, park at the fence. NOTE: Events are cance
 led in the event of rain/snow\, if the sky is overcast\, or if there is sn
 ow covering the ground. \n\nDirections:\n \nThe observing location at Floy
 d Bennett Field is next to the Community Garden. It is within walking dist
 ance of the Q35 bus\, and there is ample parking for cars. This location i
 s also easy for people to find in the dark\, as it is next to the Communit
 y Garden. \n  \nTraveling by car:\n\nDrive south on Flatbush Avenue. The 
 entrance to Floyd Bennett Field is just before the toll plaza for the Mari
 ne Parkway Bridge. There is a traffic light at this intersection.\nMake th
 e left turn at the traffic light just before the toll plaza\, and enter th
 e Park.\nApproximately 1\,000 feet down there is a Left-turn intersectio
 n. Make the hard left turn.\n3/10 mile is an entrance in the fence line 
 on the left side. Turn off headlights and leave running lights on and slow
 ly turn into the lot.\nIf you get to the Floyd Bennett Garden Association\
 , YOU WENT TO FAR. (If you are coming from the other direction inside the 
 Park\, pass it and the entrance will be on the right.)\n\n  \nTraveling b
 y mass transit:\n\nThe Q35 bus connects with the Nostrand Avenue terminal 
 for the 2 and 5 subways. Take the bus to the last stop in Brooklyn\, just 
 before the toll plaza.\nAfter exiting the bus\, cross Flatbush Avenue and 
 follow the directions above.
