 erican Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) and the Society of Illustrator
 s present the 29th Annual International\, ASBA’s second biennial appeara
 nce in the historic five-story townhouse on East 63rd Street in New York. 
 The exhibition of 50 original botanical artworks will be installed in the 
 third floor Garden Gallery. \n\nThe selection jury of Steve Compton\, Patr
 icia Jonas\, Arabelle Liepold\, and Jeanne Reiner met in May\, selecting 5
 0 artworks from 205 entries\, including 11 first-time artists. Juried in a
 re artists from the US\, Canada\, China\, Ireland\, Japan\, South Africa\,
  South Korea\, Ukraine\, and the United Kingdom. The complete list of arti
 sts can be found on ASBA’s website. \n\nA full color catalog has been pu
 blished\, featuring Jessica Daigle’s ‘Last Dance’\, Rudbeckia hirtii
  on the front cover and Annie Chen’s ‘Trigger Orchid’\, Catasetum sa
 ccatum on the back cover. Myra Sourkes and Susan Mintun have prepared the 
 popular feature “Artists’ Stories Behind the Art” which can be read

  a reflective event honoring the Society of Illustrators’ 2001 exhibitio
 n and the extraordinary collective response it inspired. Conceived in a mo
 ment of profound loss and uncertainty\, The Prevailing Human Spirit became
  a space for grief\, solidarity\, and action\, demonstrating how art can s
 erve as advocacy\, healing\, and connection. \nThrough a moderated panel c
 onversation with Greg Manchess\, Guy Billout\, Peter De Sève\, William Lo
 w\, and Terry Brown\, the executive director of the Society of Illustrator
 s at the time\, organizers closely involved in the original exhibition\, 
 Wendy Popp and Rudy Gutierrez\, will explore how creative voices helped sh
 ape a shared response that brought communities together in New York City a
 nd beyond. \nThe evening will begin at 6:15pm with a special slide present
 ation featuring artwork curated from the original exhibition. It will also
  include a small pop-up exhibition featuring original artwork by the panel
 ists and others\, as well as prints and artifacts from the original projec

 useum of American Illustration\, and The New School University and Parsons
  The New School for Design. Wendy has curated and organized impactful exhi
 bitions such as The Prevailing Human Spirit in response to 9/11 and envir
 onmental advocacy campaigns like Beyond the Polar Bear\, engaging student
 s\, colleagues\, and professional artists in meaningful collaborative proj
 ects. \nHer illustrative work spans books\, editorial publications\, and c
 hildren’s literature\, with collaborations including Simon & Schuster\, 
 Penguin Books\, HarperCollins\, and The New York Times. Wendy’s cover a
 rt and picture books have been featured in exhibitions highlighting the le
 gacy and artistry of children’s literature. She has also been recognized
  with the Dean Cornwell Recognition Award from The Society of Illustrators
  and the Distinguished Educator of the Year Award from The New School Univ
 ersity for her decades of teaching and advocacy in art and illustration. \
 nWendy continues to create and share her work internationally\, including 
 her latest children’s book published in Beijing with Kings-In Publishers
 . She lectures widely\, inspiring future artists with a focus on social ju
 stice\, environmental awareness\, and human dignity. Her practice remains 
 deeply rooted in her New York home and studio\, where she balances her pro

 \, book covers\, posters\, picture books\, and LP / CD covers and exhibite
 d internationally. His artwork for Santana’s hit album “Shaman” was 
 used as a set design at the 2002 Super Bowl half-time show\, and his paint
 ings were commissioned for the film “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Do
 cumentary.” \nHis awards include the Dean Cornwell Recognition Award\, D
 istinguished Educator in the Arts Award and a Gold medal from the Society 
 of Illustrators\, as well as a Caldecott Honor Award\, Africana Book Award
  and Pura Belpre Award for his Children’s books. In October 2025 Rudy wa
 s inducted into the prestigious Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame! He i
 s a Professor Emeritus at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY and has lec
 tured at various institutions internationally. \nHis paintings were featur
 ed as the Curatorial Spotlight at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Mes
 a Arizona in 2019 and in exhibitions at the Norman Rockwell Museum as part
  of the Unity Project Exhibition- 2020 (initiative of the Museum dedicated
  to an inclusive America) and “Imprinted- Illustrating Race- (2022 and 2
 025 at the Delaware Art Museum and will be on exhibit at the National Civi
 l rights Museum in Memphis\, TN in 2026. “Imprinted” explores how the 
 printed image has both challenged and reinforced cultural stereotypes in t

 y become our homeland? How do our bodies become a receptacle and messenger
  of the multiple realities we are immersed in? \nAnabella Lenzu will perfo
 rm excerpts of her dance-theater piece of “No more beautiful dances”\,
  followed by a Q&A. The performance challenges the viewer to think about h
 ow they view bodies. \nThe performance will be followed by a Body Mapping 
 Workshop\, where the participants use texts and drawings to share their ow
 n stories of their bodies. Body Mapping is an intergenerational dialogue t
 ool helping people of different generations to talk to each other. The exp
 erience builds trust and deepens people’s understanding of how their liv
 es are all connected with each other. This event aims to explore issues of
  identity and agency\, as experienced by a contemporary artist who is also
  a woman\, mother\, and immigrant in the United States. Through the shared
  creative process\, we will explore identity and social relationships. \nT
 his performance and workshop is open to audiences of all genders and ages 
 interested in exploring the female perspective through movement and visual
  expression\, and to experience a journey of self-discovery\, the body\, a
 nd accepting yourself anew. No previous experience is required. Comfortabl

 rapher\, scholar & educator with 35 years of experience working in Argenti
 na\, Chile\, Italy\, and the USA.  \nLenzu directs her own company\, Anab
 ella Lenzu/DanceDrama\, which since 2006 has presented 400 performances\, 
 created 15 choreographic works and performed at 100 venues\, presenting th
 ought provoking and historically conscious dance-theater in NYC. \nAs a ch
 oreographer\,  she has been commissioned all over the world for opera\, T
 V programs\, theatre productions\, and by many dance companies. She has pr
 oduced and directed several award-winning short dance films and screened h
 er work in over 200 festivals both nationally and internationally. \nLenzu
  founded her own dance school L’Atelier Centro Creativo de Danza in 1994
  in Argentina\, and as an educator for more than 30 years\, she has been t
 eaching in more than 50 institutions\, including universities\, profession
 al dance studios\, companies\, festivals\, and symposiums in the USA\, Can
 ada\, Ireland\, Egypt\, Australia\, Panamá\, Mexico\, Argentina\, Brazil\

 ional Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Independent Sector by NDEO (

 knowledging her work as a dance educator who develops innovative pedagogy 
 in the dance field\, groundbreaking teachings that have a significant impa
 ct on dance\, as well as an established record of exemplary leadership on 
 the state and national level in USA.\n\nLenzu has written for various danc
 e and arts magazines and published her first book in 2013\, entitled Unvei
 ling Motion and Emotion. The book contains writings in Spanish and English
  on the importance of dance\, community\, choreography\, and dance pedagog
 y. Her second book\, Teaching Dance through Meaningful Gestures (2025)\, e
 xplores how technique is a philosophy and a theory\, and how the body is a

  of Starlog\, the science-fiction media magazine\, and Fangoria\, the long
 -standing horror publication. This experience set the stage for an opportu
 nity to work for George Lucas\, where he served as an active member of the
  Star Wars consumer products team. Ira later set off on his own\, forming 
 a company that published official movie magazines and developed fan clubs 
 for film properties including Blade Runner\, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial\, 
 and other fan-focused films. He subsequently joined Topps\, the trading ca
 rd company\, where he spent more than 30 years as VP of Publishing\, Licen
 sing and New Product Development. At Topps\, Ira managed pop culture brand
 s including Star Wars\, Batman among many other entertainment properties. 
 He also oversaw the company’s portfolio of original IP\, including Garba
 ge Pail Kids. It was during his tenure as architect of the “GPK” licen

 As flowers fade and dry\, their colors undergo a remarkable transformation
 . What may first appear muted can reveal a surprisingly rich world of burg
 undies\, violets\, ochres\, rich blues\, and complex greens. In this three
 -hour watercolor workshop led by botanical artist Jessica Daigle\, we’l
 l learn to look beyond the surface of aging botanical specimens and discov
 er the unexpected colors and relationships within them. \nThrough observat
 ion and demonstration\, we’ll explore color mixing\, subtle neutralizati
 on\, transparent layering\, and shifts in temperature and value. We’ll a
 lso experiment with layered watercolor mark-making\, using small dashes an
 d dots of pigment to build intricate\, textural surfaces. \nTogether\, the
 se techniques will help us capture the richness\, complexity\, and distinc
 tive character of botanicals as they change over time. \nThis event is pre
 sented in partnership with ASBA as part of the American Society of Botanic
