DESCRIPTION:Celebrate 201 years of the Erie Canal\, opened in October 1825
\, and its impact on New York and the Mount Vernon Hotel.\n\n\nThe Erie C
anal opened in October 1825 and brought technological and economic changes
that made day hotels\, like the Mount Vernon Hotel\, flourish. On the gen
tle current of the canal\, where boats traveled at 4 miles per hour\, good
s and people made the journey between the Midwest and the East much more q
uickly than they could via wagon and stagecoach. \nAlthough middle-class g
uests who frequented the Mount Vernon Hotel likely could not afford the ca
nal trip and a stay along its route\, they could experience new luxuries a
nd leisure activities at this day hotel\, thanks in large part to the Erie
Canal and the economic changes it brought about. See where guests might h
ave penned letters at a Chinese writing desk\, listened to music on a Fren
ch barrel organ\, enjoyed prints in the Hudson River Portfolio\, ate meals
prepared on a cookstove from Albany\, and drank beer brewed from wheat tr
ansported along the canal. Come learn about the canal and its impact by ex
ploring these activities and other objects in the period rooms that bring
to life a day at the Mount Vernon Hotel\, operated on this site from 1826
to 1833 in the countryside of Manhattan. \nThis program is part of our Fir
st Friday of the Month series when a different themed tour is offered at n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this fascinating lecture exploring this 1799 build
ing and its architectural significance.\n\n\nAs we celebrate the 200th ann
iversary of the opening of the Mount Vernon Hotel\, we are delighted to pr
esent a lecture on the history of the building itself. Art historian J. Ke
ith Doherty will explore both the1799-era structure that now houses the Mo
unt Vernon Hotel Museum and the concept of “villa building” on the Eas
t River in the late 1700s. Ostensibly built as a barn on the former estate
of William Stephens Smith\, a colonel in the Revolutionary War\, the buil
ding is more of a showpiece\, demonstrating its owner’s great wealth and
taste to those sailing past on the East River. Its “European” styling
and sophisticated decorative elements were usually reserved for monumenta
l residential buildings in the era. By adding them to a simple\, utilitari
an outbuilding\, Smith and his successor William Robinson sought to distin
guish themselves along a shoreline that by the late eighteenth century bec
ome crowded with lavish estate complexes. \nKeith will also discuss his re
search into the history of villa building on the river\, beginning with th
e Bowery farmhouse of Peter Stuyvesant and concluding with structures like
the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Gracie Mansion. He will also provide an
overview of comparable surviving New York City-area buildings\, including
Philipse Manor Hall in Yonkers\, the Van Cortlandt House Museum and the V
alentine-Varian House in the Bronx\, and their common characteristics. \nH
elp celebrate this milestone year and join us for an evening of early New
York City architecture and history. \nAbout the Speaker: \nJ. Keith Dohert
y is a former Professor of Art History at Boston University\, where he tau
ght for 14 years. Since returning to his native New York in 2012\, he has
been speaking and publishing on the earliest social and architectural hist
ory of New York City and surrounding areas. He is currently a researcher a
nd historian at the Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site in Yonkers. \n
