where do their approaches diverge? \nThis September\, New York Insight we
lcomes four meditation teachers and clinicians working at the intersection
of Buddhist practice\, psychotherapy\, psychiatry\, and neuroscience for
a special series exploring the relationship between Buddhist practice and
Western psychology. \nTogether\, Buddhist practice and psychology can prov
ide a broad framework for exploring the roots of suffering and the conditi
ons that support greater freedom and well-being. Yet the two traditions ar
e not interchangeable\, and neither offers a complete answer to every form
of distress. \nWhat can meditation help us understand or transform\, and
when is therapy needed? How do Buddhist teachings on selfhood intersect wi
th contemporary psychology and neuroscience? What might each tradition ove

Pilar Jennings\, Paul Fulton\, Sará King\, and Mark Epstein will explore
the possibilities\, tensions\, and challenges that arise when Buddhism an

 , 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 11
 5 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nFor more than half a century there’
s been a growing interest in the relevance of Buddhist psychology and medi
tation to psychotherapeutic treatment. Carl Jung\, along with Karen Horney
\, Nina Coltart\, Erich Fromm and many other clinicians across clinical or
ientations\, have made efforts to explore how a traditional psychotherapeu
tic approach to healing might be enhanced by a Buddhist understanding of s
uffering and its end. \nIn this opening talk\, Dr. Pilar Jennings will ex
amine how these contrasting traditions understand the roots of personal an
d collective suffering\, and how their complementary though divergent meth
ods offer increased opportunities for healing when used in tandem. Togethe
r we will explore the foundational concepts addressed in both Buddhist and
psychotherapeutic teachings\, including the nature self\, identity\, loss
\, and efforts at healing. \nThis is the first installment in our Beyond T

referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing
down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles wh
ile maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sit

the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle stre

DESCRIPTION:Online: Understanding Anger – From Poison to Presence \nA Tr
auma-Informed\, Four-Part Series with Amma Thanasanti \nThursdays\, Septem
 ber 10th – October 1st\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \n \nAnger is one o
f the most misunderstood experiences in contemplative life. We’re often
taught to manage it\, release it\, or simply watch it pass. But anger can
carry real intelligence — about what matters to us\, where our boundarie
 s are\, what we’ve lost\, and where we need healing. \nThis four-part se
ries offers something different: not a technique for getting rid of anger\
, but a framework for understanding it more clearly — so it can become u
seful rather than destructive\, a doorway rather than a trap. \nAbout the
Series \nAcross four sessions\, we explore four distinct families of anger
 : \n\nEveryday anger — the irritation\, frustration\, and friction of or
dinary life. Left unexamined\, it accumulates into resentment and reactivi
ty. Understood clearly\, it reveals what matters to us and offers early si
gnal before the fire grows.\nDefensive anger — the anger that arises whe
n a boundary is crossed or a value is violated. When it hardens\, it can t
ip into self-righteousness or aggression. When heard\, it carries the inte
lligence of protection and moral clarity.\nAttachment anger — the fire o
f disconnection\, longing\, and relational rupture. When it runs unconscio
usly\, it can drive the very disconnection it most fears. When understood\
, it reveals how much connection matters — and what it needs in order to
heal.\nProjective anger — when the charge of what we feel exceeds the p
resent moment\, pointing toward something unresolved in ourselves. When un
examined\, it keeps us locked in cycles of blame and reactivity. When met
with honesty\, it becomes one of the most direct pathways to self-understa
nding and healing.\n\nThroughout the series we will also explore how each
of these families of anger shows up in our collective life — in polariza
tion\, moral distress\, ecological anxiety\, and the erosion of community.
This is not only personal work. It is also practice for staying human in
difficult times. \nHow the Sessions Work \nEach two-hour session includes:
\n\nA 30-minute guided meditation with multiple anchor options\nTeaching
grounded in nearly 50 years of Theravada contemplative practice\, trauma-i
 nformed understanding\, and attachment theory\nOptional break-out inquiry
or private journaling\nGroup discussion and Q&A\n\nAll experiential compon
ents are optional. You are in charge of your level of engagement throughou
 t. Backing off or slowing down is understood as wise and skillful practice
. \nThis is a mindfulness and educational series. It is not therapy and no
t a replacement for therapy. \nWho This Is For \nThis series is well suite
d for you if: \n\nYou have some meditation experience and want to work mor
e skillfully with anger\nYou sense that your current practice hasn’t ful
ly addressed your anger patterns\nYou’re curious about trauma-informed a
pproaches to difficult emotions\nYou want to understand the difference bet
ween anger that needs to be heard and anger that needs additional support\
n\nNo advanced practice is required. \nWho This Is Not For \nThis is not t
he right container for you if: \n\nYou are regularly destabilized and find
ing it difficult to regulate in daily life\nYou are looking for a space to
process deep emotional wounds or traumatic memories — this series is ed
ucational\, not therapeutic\nYou are in an early stage of trauma recovery
where educational content about anger might be activating without sufficie
nt support in place\nYou are not yet connected to a therapist or support s
ystem and sense this series may be a substitute for one\n\nOnline Registra
tion:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supp
orter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Tha
nk you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price inclu
des a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to
donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile dev
ice such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and d
own within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK H
ERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \nBring a Buddy
: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring
a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. Simply select “1
” from the drop-down next to the Bring a Buddy level\, and enter your sp
ecial discount code (provided in your Circle of Friends welcome email) to
reduce the price to that of a single\, standard registration. This registr
ation will grant attendance for you and your buddy. \n \nVolunteering \nAl

h various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participa
te in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities
\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon

DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Soul-Centric Mid-Life – A Five-Month Course \nwi
th Lin Wang Gordon \nFive Sundays: September 13\, October 11\, November 8\
 , December 6\, 2026\; and January 10\, 2027 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET \nLocat
ion: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nAre you in
your 40s and 50s and thinking about the second half of your life? \nEvery
life stage brings its own gifts. Each life stage has its own purpose in o
ur development as a whole being. In every season of our life\, there are c
hanges and growth\, letting go and rebirth. Midlife could bring us menopau
 se\, greying hair\, childcare\, eldercare\, an empty nest\, loss of loved
ones\, second careers\, and relationship changes… but we also have more
life experiences and skills than we had in our younger years. Perhaps we a
lso have more time and resources to find joy and explore our passions. Whi
le our culture likes to associate this time in our life with turmoil and c
risis\, it could also be a great time for inner growth\, clarity\, and pur
 pose. \nIn this five-month course\, we will use inquiries\, experiential e
xercises\, and meditation practice to explore our underlying emotions arou
 nd midlife issues. What are our fears\, doubts\, agitation\, hopes\, and d
reams? How do we make peace with the life we have led so far? How do we li
ve a fulfilling life with the time we have left? As we have learned from o
ur life experiences so far\, have we started to live in accordance with ou
r inner values and deepest desires? How do we let go of our former selves
and keep evolving? This class is for exploring questions rather than havin
g answers. It is based on Buddhist philosophy to help us transform our min
d in approaching these inquiries. It is highly interactive and experientia
l in nature – we will spend much time in group work and less time in for
mal sitting practice. Central to this course is building a community among
people in the midlife stage. \nThis is an in-person course and will meet
monthly on a Saturday for half a day. We will meditate\, journal\, form bu
ddy groups\, and build community through sharing\, dialogues\, and group w
ork. \nThe class creates a sacred and supportive container to connect with
others at the same life stage. Lin is a gifted teacher and guided us thro
ugh a journey of facing mid-life with gratitude\, honesty\, and introspect
ion. I came out of the class with a more expansive and empowered perspecti
ve on this unique stage of life. \n– A participant from Soul-Centric Mid

 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nFor all their complementarity\, the
paths of psychotherapy and meditation rest on different ideas of human na
ture\, conceptions of happiness\, the causes of suffering and what is to b
e done to overcome it. One important difference is what each tradition reg
ards as ‘real.’ What one tradition regards as effectively real is rega
rded as delusion in the other. What we take to be true and real shapes how
we go about trying to set things straight. \nAttendees will be invited to
look at their own closely held ideas about what is real\, what needs to b
e grown\, and what needs to be abandoned. \nPlease join us in this mutual
inquiry. \nThis is the second installment in our Beyond Therapy – Buddhi
sm and Psychology series. Over four Tuesday evenings\, Pilar Jennings\, Pa

DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Write Like a Buddha – A Workshop Serie
 s for All \nwith Tracy Cochran \nFridays\, September 18th – October 23rd
 \, 2026 | 1:00pm – 2:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 1
 15 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nThe spiritual truth we are seeking i
s right here\, waiting for us to notice. Witnessed with compassion\, our o
wn messy\, unruly lives become gold mines of insight and wisdom. Combining
mindfulness meditation with mindful writing\, we will explore our experie
nces like a Buddha would. \nOver the six Fridays of this workshop series\,
acclaimed writer and meditation teacher Tracy Cochran\, author of Presenc
e: The Art of Being At Home in Yourself and a contributor to The New York
Times\, New York Magazine\, and Psychology Today\, will guide us through c
ore Buddhist teachings on impermanence\, suffering\, compassion\, and free
dom. \nEach session will begin with guided meditation\, followed by mindfu
l writing inspired by the evening’s teaching. We’ll use our own lives
as material for reflection\, returning to experiences that have challenged
us\, changed us\, surprised us\, or revealed something important about wh
at matters. \nThe emphasis is not on producing polished writing\, but on w
riting as a form of attention: a way to slow down\, look closely\, and put
words to what our lives have taught us. Participants are welcome to share
their writing with the group\, but there will be no pressure to do so. \n
No meditation or writing experience is required. This workshop series is o
pen to all. \nNote: If you’re not able to attend every session\, feel fr
