  its responses to this moment of crisis\, as we struggle both to preserve 
 and reinvigorate democracy and address massive inequality. Under what circ

 rc Kagan\nRadicalized by his experiences as a tenant organizer when “the
  Bronx was burning\,” Kagan “joined the working class.” He was a tra

  Local 100. He taught high school Social Studies for ten years\; Zohran Ma
 mdani later pronounced him his favorite high school teacher. He got his Ph
 .D. in History from the CUNY Graduate Center in 2023\, teaches Labor Polit
 ics at Brooklyn College\, and is the author of Take Back the Power: The Fa

 ive music\, and the prophetic words of Bob Dylan. The show will be followe
 d by a discussion with legendary lawyer Martin Garbus\, and former Deputy 
 Chief of the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit Michael Osgood. \nWritten by Su

 investigate soon.” Lyrics from a haunting song provide a Greek chorus t
 hroughout this deeply compelling play about voter suppression in the Jim C
 row South. The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song: “Ox
 ford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about James 
 Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the University of Mi
 ssissippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died 
 ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This could ha
 ve happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 
 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbu
 s\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 3
 0s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small store sh
 e owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white office
 rs holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a stop sign
 . \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days old\, M
 rs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic violatio
 n led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wright wa
 s assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of tw
 o complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her release\,
  Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a fede
 ral lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garbus lan
 ded in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s lyrics 
 reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarb
 us warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to nothing
 \, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against white supr
 emacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus
  said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often harbore
 d black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vicious b
 eating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nSixty y
 ears later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still under a
 ttack\, this play could not be more relevant. \nAbout Playwright Susan Cha
 rlotte\nSusan’s multi-faceted career started with Prism Blues. Based on 
 her work as a prison counselor\, the play earned her a place in Columbia
 ’s MFA program and won the prestigious Joseph Kesselring Award. Her 60 
 full-length & one-act plays have been produced throughout the country. The
 y include: The Shoemaker starring Danny Aiello\, directed by Antony Mars
 ellis\; She’s Of A Certain Age\; The Round Table (w/ Oscar & Tony win
 ner Peter Stone)\, and When Truth Is Not Enough. Her play\, Love Divided
  By\, was produced by the Actors Studio and was made into a film with an
  original score by Philip Glass. The film reopened MoMA’s Titus II theat
 re. Her other films include: Something Like That\, A Broken Sole\, Come O
 n (Hamptons Film Festival.) Her TV credits include\; Did You Know My Hus
 band? with Louise Lasser & Carole Shelley (PBS)\; The Comedy Zone with 
 Patty Duke & Paul Reiser (CBS)\; Guiding Light and Loving (CBS). \nSus
 an authored the acclaimed books Creativity and Creativity In Film and 
 has written for NY Magazine and Playbill. She was also a professor at C
 olumbia U.\, NYU\, and City College. She is the founding artistic director
  of Food For Thought Productions and Cause Celebre.
