DESCRIPTION:Online: How to Live—and Die—Well – A Yearlong Course \nw
ith Amy Selzer and Nancy Glimm \nSundays\, September 20th\, October 18th\,
  November 22nd\, December 20th\, 2026\; January 17th\, February 21st\, Mar
 ch 21st\, April 18th\, May 16th\, June 20th (Father’s Day)\, July 18th\,
  August 15th\, 2027 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \n \nIf you woke up each morni
ng with a deeper awareness of Life & Death\, what might change? How would
you greet the day\, your relationships\, your routine? \nUntil we are dire
ctly confronted with our own mortality most of us live life as if it will
never end. This yearlong course is an opportunity to explore what happens
when we bring greater awareness to mortality\, change\, aging\, and the pr
eciousness of being alive. \nWhile contemplating death and impermanence ca
n bring up fear or discomfort\, this course is ultimately about deepening
our relationship with life. Participants will have space to speak openly a
bout their fears\, hopes\, and experiences\, while questioning some of the
assumptions and narratives they may be carrying. Our intention is to crea
te a community of respect\, openness\, and mutual support as we explore th
ese difficult and deeply human questions together. \nOn the third Sunday o
f every month\, we will meet virtually to explore and reflect on a teachin
g of the Buddha. With guidance from teachers Amy Selzer and Nancy Glimm\,
together we’ll look at our relationship to change and impermanence\, not
icing any resistance or fears that come up. At any stage of life\, we can
notice the wisdom that was not available earlier to us. \nThis course offe
rs: \n\nA monthly sangha of safety and support\nA community of accountabil
ity for a daily meditation practice\nDeeper understanding of impermanence
as a teacher\nTools for self-acceptance and inviting moments of joy\nOppor
tunities to strengthen and grow mindfulness in daily life\nHomework and pr
actice sheets to keep you engaged\nOptional “buddy groups” where you c
an share your experiences with and reflections on the teachings learned in
class\n\nWe hope that you join us to cultivate a life without fear and on
e dedicated to the well-being of all. \n“Once the two of us started teac
hing on our own\, we realized that what the Buddha taught illuminated life
and death and that his teachings were embedded in both. Our intention is
to develop a year-long course that will be both encouraging and doable\, s
o that participants will become more comfortable about their own death and
what is possible for them in life.” – Amy Selzer and Nancy Glimm \nRe
gistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the
“Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” lev
el. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration pric
e includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportu
nity to donate more after the program.) \nPayment plans are available if y
ou would prefer to pay for your registration in 10 monthly installments. S
imply make your first installment\, and you will be registered for the cou
rse\, and your card will automatically be charged on a monthly basis for t
he remaining 9 installments. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device

DESCRIPTION:Online: Exploring the Power of Forgiveness \nwith Elaine Retho
 ltz \nSunday\, September 20th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \nOnline via
Zoom \n \nWhether it is the betrayals\, disappointments\, and abandonments
experienced in our interpersonal lives\, the injustices and tragedies per
petrated in society\, or the various ways we have failed to live up to our
own or others expectations of ourselves\, forgiveness practice can begin
to loosen the ropes binding us to the past. It can allow us to come more f
ully into our hearts and can be a catalyst that transforms bitterness\, an
ger\, and grief into compassion and lovingkindness. \nIn this half-day ret
reat\, we will explore our views on forgiveness\, what forgiveness is and
isn’t\, the challenges we face in embarking on this practice\, and how
forgiveness practice relates to many of the Buddha’s most important teac
hings\, including the cultivation of mettā (unconditional kind regard or
lovingkindness)\, the understanding of the Three Characteristics (Imperman
ence\, Dukkha\, not-self) and the Four Noble Truths. The half-day will inc
 lude periods of practice\, investigation\, reflection\, and discussion. \n
Online (Zoom) Registration:\nPlease register below for online participatio
n via Zoom. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level ena
bles others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your ge
nerosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level o
f teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after
the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phon
e or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the bel
ow form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the re
gistration form in a new browser window. \nBring a Buddy: If you are a mem
ber of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to
this program for no additional cost. Simply select “1” from the drop-
down next to the Bring a Buddy level\, and enter your special discount cod
e (provided in your Circle of Friends welcome email) to reduce the price t
o that of a single\, standard registration. This registration will grant a
ttendance for you and your buddy. \n\nVolunteering \nAll of our programs r
ely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and
responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs
at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out
our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

 ctor\, Nancy Bruning\, BA\, MPH\, PAPHS. \nClasses are structured so that
all levels of fitness will be accommodated\; however\, all classes involve
relatively brisk walking and some stairs because of the layout of the par

weather\, but always meet at the Heather Garden entrance. \nTuesday and T
hursday classes end at various points near the starting point\, including
the volleyball courts. Saturday class ends at the Anne Loftus Playground\,
using the various pieces of equipment\, and offers optional after-class g
roup walk to the Greenmarket on Isham Street. All classes end with closing
with stretches. \n(Note: Fitness Walking does not meet if it is raining o
r if the actual temperature or wind chill is below 20 degrees F.)

A New Chapter for West Harlem Arts: Rio II Art Gallery Reopens with a P
 owerful Exhibition by Kenia Akridge \n \n \n \n \n
 		\n \n \n \n \n August 12\,
  2026 \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The
reopening of the Rio II Art Gallery marks the return of a cherished cultur
 al space\, and a renewal of a longstanding commitment to art\, community\,
and creative expression in Upper Manhattan.A program of Broadway Housing
Communities\, Rio II Gallery has long served as a platform where emerging
and established artists engage audiences through exhibitions that reflect
the richness and diversity of West Harlem’s cultural landscape. With its
doors open once again\, the gallery begins a new chapter by presenting an
exhibition featuring the compelling work of artist Kenia Akridge\, curate
 d by Ana-Ofelia Rodríguez and José Reyes. \n \n \n \n
 				\n \n \n \n \n \n \n For decades\, Broadway Housin
g Communities has understood that affordable housing and the arts are inse
parable components of vibrant\, healthy communities. Through the Rio Galle
ries – of which there are three – the organization has cultivated oppo
rtunities for artists while creating spaces where residents\, neighbors\,
and visitors can encounter contemporary art in an accessible and welcoming
environment. The reopening of Rio II\, located at BHC’s icon Dorothy Da
y building on 135th Street and Riverside Drive\, reaffirms that mission\,
celebrating creativity as an essential part of community life. The inaugur
al exhibition places Kenia Akridge’s work at the center of this renewed
vision. Akridge’s artistic practice explores identity\, memory\, resilie
nce\, and transformation through expressive visual language. Her works inv
ite viewers to engage deeply with personal and collective narratives\, bal
ancing emotional intensity with moments of beauty and contemplation. Throu
gh layered imagery\, texture\, and color\, Akridge creates pieces that enc
ourage reflection on the complexities of human experience while celebratin
 g strength and possibility. \n \n \n \n \n \n

Curator Ana-Ofelia Rodríguez flanked by artists Andrea Arroyo and F
elipe Galindo at the recent show opening\n \n \n \n
\n \n \n \n Attending the exhibition were local artists an
d community leaders\, such as artists Andrea Arroyo\, Felipe Galindo\, Mil
agros Batista\, Dorothy Krakauer\, NoMAA’s Uptown Arts Stroll Director M
artin Collins\, and former Community Board Chair Barry Wienberg\, just to
name a few. \nThe exhibition has been thoughtfully curated by Ana-Ofelia R
odríguez and José Reyes\, whose longstanding dedication to arts programm
ing has helped shape the cultural identity of the Rio Galleries. Rodrígue
z\, who established Broadway Housing Communities’ gallery program\, has
spent decades creating exhibition opportunities for artists while fosterin
g meaningful connections between art and community. Reyes brings his own c
uratorial vision\, emphasizing dialogue between artists\, audiences\, and
the neighborhoods the galleries serve. Together\, they have assembled an e
xhibition that honors both Akridge’s distinctive artistic voice and the
 gallery’s enduring mission. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
\n Miriam Raccah’s arrival as BHC’s new executive director s
ignals a powerful moment of renewal for the RIO Galleries\, whose reopenin
g stands as both a cultural homecoming and a forward‑looking commitment
to West Harlem. Under Raccah’s leadership\, the galleries are being rein
troduced not just as exhibition spaces but as vibrant community platforms\
, places where local artists\, neighborhood stories\, and BHC’s reinvigo
rated vision converge. Her stewardship marks a fresh chapter of collaborat
ion\, creativity\, and public engagement\, positioning the RIO galleries a
s a cornerstone of BHC’s deeper partnership with West Harlem and its evo
lving cultural landscape. For Broadway Housing Communities\, the return of
Rio II reflects an ongoing investment in the belief that art belongs with
in the everyday lives of the communities it serves. \n \n \n
 		\n \n \n \n Miriam Raccah\, Broadwa
 y Housing Communities' Chief Executive Officer\n \n \n
 	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n On e
 xhibit\, by Kenia Akridge\n \n \n \n \n \n \n
\n Visitors can expect an exhibition that is visually engaging w
hile offering opportunities for thoughtful dialogue. Akridge’s work chal
lenges viewers to consider themes of identity\, perseverance\, and belongi
ng\, subjects that resonate deeply within the diverse communities surround
ing the gallery. The exhibition demonstrates how contemporary art can insp
ire empathy\, curiosity\, and connection across generations and background
 s. As Rio II Art Gallery welcomes visitors once again\, the exhibition fea
turing Kenia Akridge stands as both a celebration and an invitation: a cel
ebration of artistic excellence and community resilience\, and an invitati
on for audiences to rediscover a space where creativity\, culture\, and co
nversation continue to thrive. With the leadership of Broadway Housing Com
munities in Miriam Raccah\, and the curatorial expertise of Ana-Ofelia Rod
ríguez and José Reyes\, Rio II Gallery resumes its role as an important
cultural destination—one where art not only reflects the community but a
 lso helps shape its future. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n
