DESCRIPTION:At the farewell dinner at our Hosted Group Travel Experiences\
, we like to go around the table and have each of our travelers share what
they loved most about the experience. It is a helpful exercise to receive
real time feedback of course. It is also a meaningful exercise to pause a
nd reflect on the time we spent together as a group exploring a special sp
ot on the globe. \nThis is exactly what we did on our last night in Cartag
ena. To ensure the intimacy of the experience we took over the teeny tiny
family owned restaurant La Picua. Such a delight to be tended to by the hu
sband and wife team that so clearly loved hosting our group in their color
filled and art filled dining space. It was the ideal setting for the grou
p to share what they loved most about their experience. Interestingly\, ou
r travelers did not land on any one singular experience to lavish praise u
pon. Rather they shared their observations on what visiting Cartagena mean
t to them. \nEach traveler expressed how much they appreciated the positiv
e energy that permeated the whole experience. They loved the joy that seem
ed to emanate from each and every human we met. They loved the dreamy\, pl
ayful and colorful Cartagena aesthetic that could be admired with our eyeb
alls as we explored this city in great depth. They loved feeling so very w
elcomed by each of our hosts and loved how generous each host was with the
ir knowledge and enthusiasm for Cartagena. \nIt occurred to me as our trav
elers were sharing these thoughts that the reasons they LOVED our experien
ce in Cartagena were the very same reasons I loved this group of travelers
. \nEach and every person in our group came to this experience with a posi
tive energy and an open mindset – much like the country we were visiting
. Each person derived joy from each and every experience – large and sma
ll. And their fashion aesthetic? They matched Cartagena with that too! Eve
ry day and evening they turned up in colorful and eye-catching fashion ens
embles that matched the colorful Cartagena aesthetic. \nMost importantly e
ach of our travelers were so warm\, welcoming and authentic to one another
  – they directly matched Cartagena’s warm\, welcoming and authentic vi
be. The vibe of the group directly and completely matched the vibes of the
city we were exploring!! WHOA!!! \nThe entire experience in Cartagena\, w
as once again enhanced by sharing it with the group: Collective Effervesce
nce defined. I guess we are in the business of creating opportunities for
Collective Effervescence! 🙂 \nOur last morning was collective effervesc
ence – Cartagena style. On the morning of our final full day we experien
ced a drum performance which in and of itself was quite captivating. But t
hen… then we were on the receiving end of a thorough and thoroughly sati
sfying drum lesson. \nTogether as a group we gathered in a circle and rhyt
hmically followed directions repeating the drum beats of our instructor wi
th concentration and enthusiasm. The pace quickened and we kept up – our
pulses raising right along with the quick syncopation of our drum beats.
I am guessing our pulse rates were all syncopated as we cheerfully patted
away on our personal drum set up. And we crushed it!! \nThe group drumming
together filled the tent with music and smiles and a pulsating and captiv
ating energy. I could have stayed there drumming away with our group all d
ay. This experience too matched the vibe of Cartagena and our group: joyfu
l\, coursing with positive energy\, an open expression of authentic creati
vity. \nDid our travelers choose Cartagena because they were drawn to the
vibe that matched their own vibe? Or did the vibe of Cartagena inspire our
group to match its vibe? Or is it a simple combo of the two?  \nEither w
ay it was a very special travel experience that I will be forever grateful
to have been a part of. Thank you group for joining me in Cartagena. My e
xperience was a million times better from experiencing it with each of you
and your high vibing selves. \nWhere shall we GO next!!?? \nHope you can
join for one of our hosted group trips someday soon so you can experience
the collective effervescence that is created for yourself. London anyone?

rs \n \nThe Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) welcomes award-winning foo
d writer Clarissa Wei for an engaging conversation celebrating her new coo
kbook\, Sitting the Month: Postpartum Recipes for Rest & Recovery. In disc
ussion with second-generation Taiwanese herbalist and recipe collaborator
Stella Wang and moderated by food editor Genevieve Yam\, the program explo
res the rich culinary traditions surrounding postpartum recovery in Chines
e culture and the enduring wisdom behind the practice of 坐月子 zuò yu
è zi\, or “sitting the month.” \nAcross Chinese communities\, the fir
st month after childbirth has long been regarded as a vital period of heal
ing\, supported by rest\, herbal remedies\, and nourishing meals believed
to restore strength and replenish the body. Inspired by her own experience
as a new mother in Taiwan\, Wei combines 88 nourishing recipes with pract
ical guidance and personal storytelling to illustrate a centuries-old trad
ition for contemporary home cooks. Together\, the speakers will discuss th
e intersections of food\, motherhood\, health\, and cultural identity whil
e examining how culinary practices preserve family knowledge and connect u
s to our heritage. Whether you are an expectant or new parent\, a caregive
r\, a food enthusiast\, or simply curious about culinary traditions\, this
conversation offers a thoughtful exploration of care\, resilience\, and t
he enduring power of food to nourish both body and community. \nWith gener
ous support from Chiyo\, which offers nutrition programs for fertility\, p
regnancy\, and postpartum\, attendees can also enjoy complimentary bites o
 f Gingery Chicken Congee\, Spiced Goji Berry Brownies\, and Astragalus & J
ujube Tonic from the cookbook. \nAbout Clarissa Wei  \nClarissa Wei is t

  \nAbout Stella Wang  \nStella Wang is a second-generation Taiwanese h
erbalist\, mom\, and owner of EDD Herbs\, a herbal dessert and tea shop th
at she operates out of her father’s Chinese medicine shop in Taipei. \nA

or to joining Serious Eats\, she was an editor at Epicurious and has cont
ributed to Food52\, Bon Appétit\, King Arthur Baking\, and more. She gre
w up between Toronto and Hong Kong and is a graduate of the University of
St Andrews in Scotland. She currently lives in New York with her husband\,

th a tote bag full of vegetables or at home burying her nose in a wrinkled
copy of Nigella Lawson’s How to Eat. \nAbout Chiyo \n \nAt Chiyo\, gen
erational wisdom meets modern nutritional science to care for women throug
h life’s most demanding transitions. We offer the first-of-its-kind nutr

ut Sitting the Month \n \nWhen Clarissa Wei gave birth to her first child\
, she was living in Taiwan\, where the postpartum period lasts four weeks
and is considered one of the most important periods of a woman’s life. T
he practice of “sitting the month” includes therapeutic herbs and warm
ing meals—stir-fried pork liver\, chicken simmered with rice wine and se
same oil\, or steamed cod with goji berries—believed to help repair the
womb and reenergize the new mom. There isn’t a lot of information in the
English-speaking world about this practice\, or its cuisine\, and she set
out to learn more. \nIn Sitting the Month\, through gorgeous photography
\, stories\, and recipes\, Clarissa Wei offers a holistic outlook on food
specifically intended to nurture new mothers back to health. Any partner o
r relative (or a very tired mom) can navigate these 88 recipes. With guida
nce from Stella Wang\, a second-generation owner of a Chinese medicine sho
p\, she introduces three stages of recovery. Start with light\, herbal sou
ps such as Salmon Miso Soup and Egg Drop Seaweed Soup to detox the body. A
dvance to collagen and protein-rich dishes such as Scallion Oil Chicken an
d Black Vinegar Pork Knuckle Stew to support tissue repair\, and build up
to Ten Tonic Supreme Soup\, packed with fiery herbs intended to combat dee
p fatigue and lingering weakness. Each recipe is designed for solo meals o
r for sharing with a partner. Freezing advice and notes on unique herbs ma
ke this ancient tradition accessible and doable for modern moms in the Uni
ted States. There’s an old folk saying that sums up the East Asian attit
ude toward postpartum care: During pregnancy\, nurture the baby. After pr
 egnancy\, nurture your body.
