In this illustrated talk\, architect William Bialosky uncovers the remarkable story of Collect Pond\, the freshwater lake that o nce shaped the physical\, social\, and economic life of Lower Manhattan. \ nFor two centuries\, Collect Pond supplied New York City with fresh water. But nearby industries polluted its shores\, and the city began burying th e lake in 1802. The resulting unstable and undesirable ground made the lan d inexpensive\, helping determine who could afford to live there. Over tim e\, the former pond basin became Five Points and\, later\, part of one of America’s most vital immigrant neighborhoods\, Chinatown. \nBialosky tra ces this layered history from glacial ice and early Manhattan infrastructu re to the formation of Five Points\, the growth of Chinatown\, and the exc avations taking place today. It moves. It passes right beside us as a mystery and desire for all things that poetry can possess\, or be possessed by\, the awful\, cosmic problem that we seek to battle with in the murky world we may already know . \nCan we look at García Lorca’s “difficulty” as an ethical and ae sthetic practice\, as if he wants us to read the language of the world ins tantly even when his images startle us? Rather than deciphering symbols as fixed codes\, we will ask how his work teaches us to read relationships b etween body and landscape\, desire and death\, history and myth\, language and silence\, etc. \nStudents may use whatever edition they may have in h and of Poet in New York (1929-1930). The instructor will be using Greg Sim on and Steven F.
